Cynthia struggled to breathe, but she wasn't angry with him. She merely looked at him with a small smile and said, "Felix, welcome home."
However, he was too angry to reply to her. He pulled the quilt off Cynthia's body and ripped her nightgown apart with his bare hands. He sneered, "Mrs. Ning, you've gone through all this effort to bring me home from the YH Mansion. Were you planning on seducing me by wearing this?"
Felix hadn't been home in over a month, and Cynthia didn't expect him to come back all of a sudden. His fingers tore off the lace strap of her nightgown, and the silk thread dangled against her collarbone, which made her look enticing.
Cynthia wasn't a stupid woman. Of course, she knew exactly why Felix was so angry.
This afternoon, his grandmother, Johanna, had visited. She heard from one of the maids, Emma Zhang, that he hadn't been home in a month and was currently staying in the YH Mansion. She held Cynthia's hands and comforted her, "You poor girl! Felix has been neglecting you lately! You've suffered a lot with him. Don't worry about a thing. I'll find a way to bring him home."
Cynthia replied with a reassuring smile. The old lady was like an adorable child when she fussed over matters like this.
"Mrs. Ning, you exposed our scandals and tried everything in your power to marry me. Unfortunately for you, I'm not interested in manipulative women like yourself. It wouldn't faze me even if you took off all your clothes and stood naked in front of me!"
"Felix..."
Cynthia straightened up. By the time she opened her mouth to explain, he had loosened his grip on her neck. His delicate wrist watch snagged against her skin and made her stagger forward and fall from the bed.
Felix was stunned.
His brows immediately furrowed. He never intended for her to get hurt. A strange expression flashed across his face as he walked over to the bathroom.
Cynthia fell hard to the ground. It took her a few moments to stand back up and lie back down on the bed.
She closed her eyes and tried to compose herself. Then, she heard the sound of water flowing. Felix must be taking a shower.
Being a neat freak, he would feel nauseous whenever he touched any part of Cynthia's body. Touching other women was no problem for him, but not her.
After taking a shower, he lay on the bed next to her without saying another word.
She decided to pretend to be asleep and didn't raise her head until his breathing calmed. After that, she carefully crawled to his side. With her palms facing down, she moved to place her hands on his chest.
She felt his steady heartbeat against her fingertips, and she immediately relaxed into a smile.
By the time Felix woke up, it was already noon. He got up, went into the bathroom to freshen up, then made his way downstairs.
Emma was busy preparing lunch by this time. When she noticed him enter the room, she walked up to him with a smile and said, "Mr. Ning, Mrs. Ning has cooked lunch for you."
His face showed no reaction of joy or anger, and his tone was as cold as ever.
"Where is she?"
As soon as he said the words, Cynthia came into the room with a dark gray casserole in her hands, wearing gloves.
"You're awake. I made some soup for you."
Cynthia's voice was so casual, which made him turn to her with a look of surprise. In the past, she was known to cry unreasonably. Now, she was acting sensibly, and he wasn't used to her acting this way.
He wondered if she was playing another one of her tricks on him again.
His face immediately darkened at the thought.
"I never eat soup! I'm not interested in having any soup made by someone like you!"
Her eyebrows twitched at his reaction. She knew what he meant when he said, "someone like you" and she had no choice but to relent to him.
She remained silent for a few moments. Then, she filled a bowl of soup for herself and sat at the table as if nothing had happened. She then began to eat her soup.
His eyes flashed with anger as he watched her. He pressed a hand against his forehead as if he couldn't stand the sight. Then, he kicked over a chair not too far away from her before he stomped upstairs to take his coat and went back downstairs.
When she noticed that he was heading out, she quickly stood from the table and ran over to him. She grabbed him by the sleeve and stared at him.
"Felix, when are you coming back?"
Irritated, Felix pushed her away and replied in a harsh tone, "I'll be back when you're not around."
Cynthia looked at him with a small smile on her face, and her eyes wrinkled as if he had told her a joke.
"I'll be waiting for you to come back. Be careful when you're out."
Felix scoffed at her. He knew she meant that she wouldn't leave here any time soon. Angered by her reply, he quickly turned his back to her.
The sound of an engine starting rang out. When she looked over to see Felix's car driving away, the smile on her face vanished. A touch of sadness flashed across her eyes, but it was gone in an instant.
She took a deep breath to steady herself and realized that she would have many hardships to weather soon enough.
