I was at my final fitting, trying on the masterpiece wedding dress I had spent eighteen months designing, when my phone rang. It was my fiancé, Hartwell. The day before our wedding, he called to cancel. He told me my stepsister Jessi had terminal cancer, and her dying wish was to marry him. "Heaven, she's dying. It's just fulfilling the wish of a terminally ill person. I'll compensate you with three percent of my company's stock." To fulfill her wish, he expected me to step aside for the girl who had spent her life stealing my things, backed by my biased parents. Later, his mother demanded I return my engagement ring so Jessi could wear it on her deathbed, and Hartwell actually suggested I wait as his backup plan. "This thing with Jessi is temporary. After she's gone in three months, I'll marry you then." They even stole my custom wedding invitations, the venue I booked, and my floral designs to celebrate their betrayal. I looked at the man I was supposed to marry, feeling nothing but incandescent rage and absolute disgust. My years of compromise had only taught them to take more, but I was done being a victim. I forced him to sign over fifty-one percent of his company and pay two million dollars in damages. But my real revenge came at the courthouse, when he realized we were already legally married and state law required a thirty-day cooling-off period for divorce. "Heaven, you have to keep this quiet. You can't ruin my wedding to Jessi." I slapped him hard across the face, ready to make his upcoming ceremony the biggest joke in New York.

The Jilted Wife's Spectacular Comeback Chapter 1

"Heaven, the wedding is off."

Heaven Johnston thought her ears were playing tricks on her. On the other end of the line, the contact name "My Hart" belonged to her fiancé, Hartwell Finley, but his voice was eerily calm, almost inhumanly so.

Standing before the three‑panel mirror, Heaven tried on the wedding gown she had sewn with her own hands. That dress was the product of eighteen months of painstaking work, a masterpiece of silk and lace. Her fingertips, calloused from years of sketching and stitching, traced the delicate embroidery on the bodice. With quiet certainty, she knew this was one of her finest creations. It was the flagship piece of her self‑founded brand, "Aethel", a testament to the business empire she had built from nothing.

She looked at her reflection: pale‑skinned, hair pinned up, a happy smile still lingering. Just a quarter of an hour ago, she had been daydreaming about walking down the aisle toward the man she loved in just a few days, picturing herself holding her bouquet and stepping into the sanctuary of marriage. She had waited six years for this moment.

No one around her had noticed anything amiss; they were still helping her adjust the gown. "This is truly breathtaking, Heaven," her assistant, Paige, murmured beside her, her voice filled with genuine awe. The shop assistants echoed their approval, their faces reflecting the light, champagne‑bubbly happiness of the room.

Gripping her phone, her nails digging into her palm, she tried to pretend she hadn't heard. She kept her smile frozen and continued, "Hart, I'm in the final fitting. You are going to be absolutely stunned."

He paused, then repeated himself, his voice flat and devoid of emotion: "Heaven, we need to talk. The wedding... is off."

At those words, her heart didn't just sink; it plummeted like a stone falling into an icy abyss.

"Are you telling me, or asking me?" she heard herself say, her voice as cold as frozen wine.

Hartwell spoke flatly, devoid of any emotion she had once known in him. He explained that her stepsister, Jessi Merrill, had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. She had only three months to live, and Jessi's dying wish was to marry him.

"I know it's a lot to ask, canceling your wedding at the last minute, but she's dying. Can't you have some pity on her?" Hartwell continued.

For a split second, Heaven felt that Jessi Merrill deserved it. Karma, she thought, had finally caught up with her. But she was still skeptical-her stepsister was far too calculating for that. She remembered that she had once hired a private investigator to keep an eye on Jessi for any unusual behavior. She had just been too busy with the wedding preparations to follow up.

She remembered everything that had been taken from her-a lifetime of theft. A teddy bear when she was six. A state‑level art award when she was sixteen. And now, her fiancé. Her wedding. Her entire future, snatched away by the girl who had made victimhood her profession, the girl whom her father, Howard Johnston, and her stepmother, Brenda, had always favored. Her stepmother had even taken her father, and for all these years Heaven had been shut out, watching them play happy family.

Her fingers tightened around the phone, nails pressing deeper into her palm. The sharp sting served as an anchor amid the overwhelming, dizzying wave of disbelief.

"So you expect me," she began, her voice trembling not with sorrow but with a low, volcanic rage, "to step aside the day before my wedding for the girl who has spent her entire life trying to destroy mine?"

A weary sigh came through the phone, like a man placating a hysterical child. "Heaven, this is just about granting a dying woman's wish. I'll make it up to you. How about three percent of Finley Group shares?"

The offer landed like a slap. Her love, her dignity, the eighteen months of her labor-all reduced to a stock transaction. It was an insult so profound that it jolted her awake.

She didn't cry. Instead, a low, hollow laugh escaped her lips, a sound stripped of all warmth, sharp and jagged with icy edges.

"Hartwell Finley," she said, each word enunciated like shards of glass with chilling clarity, "you will regret this."

She didn't wait for a reply. She hung up.

Paige and the consultants finally sensed that something was wrong; their cheerful expressions gave way to wariness.

Heaven drew a deep, shuddering breath and turned back to the mirror. She looked at the pale, beautiful stranger in the magnificent gown staring back at her. Then, her hand shot up. She grabbed the diamond‑encrusted veil and ripped it from her hair. The delicate fabric made a soft, final tearing sound as she threw it to the floor.

"Get me out of this dress," she ordered Paige, her tone curt, brooking no argument.

Paige hurried to obey, fumbling with the intricate buttons and laces at the back. As the heavy gown slipped from her shoulders, Heaven felt a strange lightness. The weight of shattered dreams and the last shred of her illusions about love fell away with it.

She slipped into a sleek, sharply tailored black dress of her own. Picking up her phone, she ignored the buzzing of Hartwell's frantic calls and texts. Walking to the floor‑to‑ceiling window, she gazed out over the glittering expanse of Fifth Avenue. Her eyes held no tears, only a cold, still silence.

Another buzz came from her phone: a bank notification. Hartwell had transferred the "compensation."

She stared at the long string of zeros, her lips curling into a cold, humorless smile. She didn't delete his contact; instead, she edited his name from "My Hart" to "The Fool."

A plan began to form in her mind: cold and precise. This was her first step toward revenge.

She scrolled to the private investigator's number and reached out. A reply came quickly-a file and a recording. She opened the audio, listened, and frowned. The confirmation was unmistakable: her stepsister had been deceiving everyone. She decided to fight fire with fire. If Jessi wanted to play dead so badly, then she would give her a death worth remembering.

Then she dialed her most trusted lawyer. "David, I need you to draft a document. Immediately." Her voice was calm again, but it was the calm at the eye of a storm.
