Chapter 1 The first encounter

Err.... The sound of the alarm blared loudly across the room.

"OMG! Today is the interview," Ruby Clark said as she sat up on her bed.

She said a little prayer, and got down from her bed to get ready to go for her interview.

As a 25 year old lady who had been unemployed for years, she couldn't afford to be late to her interview.

She stepped out of her house after a quick bath and make up session, and flagged down a taxi.

"Blackwood Enterprise", she told the driver as she rested back to enjoy the ride.

As soon as she alighted from the taxi, the late summer sun beat down on her.

Her grip on the folder holding her resume tightened.

She glanced up at the towering steel and glass of Blackwood Enterprise, a Fortune 500 company she had dreamt of working for all her life.

Today, she would walk through that door, and eventually make that dream happen.

The reception buzzed with activities as she stepped inside.

The rustling of files, clanking of keypads, and clicking of heels against the marble floor created an undercurrent of tension.

Ruby paused to scan the room, a couple of other people- applicants she presumed- sat scattered across high quality chairs, nervously clutching their portfolios.

She wasn't alone!

"Take a seat, ma'am," the receptionist said, gesturing to the waiting area."Your name will be called shortly".

Ruby took her seat, her mind drifting back to the many debts she had to pay off.

This interview wasn't just an opportunity- it was her lifeline.

The weight of it all pressed heavily on her chest, once she gets this job, it will change her life for good.

She was jolted from her réviré as one of the applicants tapped on her shoulder.

"How often does Blackwood hold interviews?" the woman asked.

"I don't know, maybe once a year, or whenever", Ruby replied sharply, hoping her response will dissuade the woman from asking further questions, and it worked.

As minutes dragged into hours, irritation began to simmer down Ruby's nerves.

She wasn't new to waiting, but this was excessive.

She glanced at her watch for what felt like the hundredth time.

She had been waiting for four hours. Her frustration mounted.

The elevator doors finally slid open, and a man walked into the room, his presence commanding immediate attention.

HAZEL BLACKWOOD

Ruby recognized him instantly. She had read about him, his meteoric rise in the tech world. The images of him online hadn't done enough justice.

Dressed in a well tailored royal blue suit, his piercing gray eyes scanned the room, with an expression that reeked of disdain.

He strode past the waiting applicants without as much as a glance, his polished leather shoes clicking against the marble floor.

A woman- likely his assistant- hurried after him, her heels struggling to keep up.

"Mr. Blackwood", she called her voice tight with urgency. He stopped abruptly, turning to face her. His frown deepened."What is it Amanda?" he asked."Sir these are the applicants for the interview. Should i......."

"What interview?" he asked cutting her off.

"The interview for the post of the secretary", Amanda said.

"Send them off", Hazel said, his voice cold and clipped, echoed in the room.

"These ones are just a waste of my time".

A wave of disbelief surged through the applicants.

Some began murmuring complaints, while others remained frozen to their seats, too stunned to speak as a result of his audacity. Amanda moved close to Hazel clearly hoping to change his mind, but he didn't budge.

Ruby's hands balled into fists as she watched the scene before her unfold, how dare him! She knew she had lost her opportunity of getting the job, but she wouldn't sit back and watch Hazel- or anyone else- talk to her like she was a nobody. She stood abruptly, and headed straight for Hazel.

"Excuse me!" she said, her voice cutting through the tension.

Hazel turned to her, a flicker of surprise crossing his face.

It was clear he wasn't used to being addressed so directly, especially not by a mere applicant."What?" he asked his tone firm.

"What kind of person are you? Making people wait for hours, only for you to dismiss them like they don't matter? Why announce an interview if you have no intention of taking it seriously?" Ruby's voice rose with every word.

"Listen, you may have all the money in the world, but that doesn't give you the right to treat people like trash".

Gasps erupted from every corner of the room. Some applicants shook their heads, in pity for what's to come, while a few others looked on with quiet admiration.

"And who do you think you are to question my decision?" Hazel asked, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.

"First of all, I'm Ruby Clark", she said defiantly.

"And I'm not questioning your decision, but rather, I'm questioning your decency.

I wonder how someone with this kind of attitude manages to run an empire".

Hazel's smirk vanished, replaced by a cold glare. "Look here, Lack or Spark, or whatever it is that you're called. You're a waste of my time", he said dismissively, tuning away.

Ruby's face flushed with anger.

"How dare you?" she snapped. Before she could think twice, her hand flew up and landed sharply on Hazel's cheek.

The room felt silent, a collective gasp filling the space. Hazel Blackwood- untouchable, unshakable Hazel Blackwood- had just been slapped by a mere applicant. His head snapped to the side, but he didn't flinch. Slowly, he turned back to her, his jaw tightening as his gray eyes bore into hers. "Get out", he said, his voice dangerously low.

Ruby held her ground for a moment, glaring at him with all the fire in her soul.

Then grabbing her folder, she turned and walked out of the building. But not before raising her middle finger high enough for everyone to see.

As the glass doors swung shut behind her, Ruby let out a shaky breath, she couldn't believe what she did back there.

Her dreams of working at Blackwood Enterprises might have just gone up in flames, but she refused to regret standing up for herself. If nothing else, she had left a mark that Hazel Blackwood wouldn't forget soon.
