For five years, Seraphina Vale believed she had everything a woman could ask for-a beautiful marriage, a powerful husband, and a love she thought would last forever. Then, on their fifth wedding anniversary, she walks into a private hotel suite carrying a surprise gift for Lucian Cross and finds him in bed with the woman his family has always wanted him to marry. Vivienne Laurent. What hurts more than the betrayal is Lucian's reaction. He doesn't deny it. He doesn't beg for forgiveness. Instead, he places divorce papers in front of Seraphina and calmly tells her that their marriage has been over for a long time. Heartbroken and humiliated, Seraphina walks away from the man she loved without knowing that her divorce is about to change everything. Hours after leaving Lucian, she is approached by a lawyer hired by her late mother, carrying a secret that has been buried for twenty-five years. Seraphina's mother was never the ordinary woman Seraphina believed her to be. She was Isolde Vale-the last heir of the mysterious Vale Dynasty, a family whose fortune vanished after a devastating betrayal twenty-five years ago. And Seraphina is the sole heir. The divorce has activated a trust deliberately designed to protect her inheritance from anyone who might marry her for money. Suddenly, the woman Lucian discarded has become the owner of an empire his family has spent decades secretly profiting from. But the inheritance comes with a terrifying discovery. The Cross family is connected to the disappearance of the Vale fortune. Worse, evidence suggests that Lucian's father knew exactly who Seraphina was before Lucian ever married her. Was her marriage to Lucian really love? Or was she unknowingly placed at the center of a twenty-five-year-old scheme? As Seraphina begins uncovering the truth, she returns to the world that once dismissed her-not as Lucian Cross's abandoned wife, but as the woman who now holds the power to destroy everything his family built. And Lucian soon realizes the greatest mistake of his life was not losing his wife. It was believing she would remain powerless after he chose another woman. But revenge becomes complicated when Seraphina discovers that Lucian's betrayal was only part of the truth-and that the man who broke her heart may have been manipulated by secrets he never knew existed. Now she must uncover who destroyed her family, why her mother hid her identity, and whether Lucian was ever truly her enemy. Because before Seraphina can decide whether she will forgive the man who betrayed her, she must first discover the truth about the marriage that was never supposed to be love.

THE DAY MY HUSBAND CHOSE HER Chapter 1 THE ANNIVERSARY SURPRISE

Seraphina Vale had spent three whole weeks planning a night that, honestly, she hoped would remind her husband of how they'd fallen for each other in the first place.

By eight, she had everything set.

She'd booked a private suite, thirty-two floors up, looking out over the city. Huge windows reflected city lights everywhere. She'd made sure the room was filled with white roses, because Lucian once said they reminded him of their first winter together. Dinner waited in the next room-every one of his favorites. And tucked away in her handbag, a small black box held a watch she'd searched for over two months to find.

By Cross family standards, it wasn't flashy. That was the point.

It was personal.

She didn't want to give Lucian another expensive thing for their anniversary. She wanted to show him she remembered the tiny details everyone else overlooked.

She checked her phone.

8:17 p.m.

Lucian had said he'd be there by eight.

Seraphina managed a smile, even though disappointment pulled at her. He was probably working, she told herself-like always.

Lucian Cross was heir to one of the city's most powerful families. His schedule was insane. Lately he seemed out of reach-even more meetings, surprise work trips, late nights slipping into bed after midnight, careful not to wake her.

She noticed.

Of course she did.

But love does funny things. You start making excuses for the person who hurts you.

Tonight was supposed to be different.

Fifth wedding anniversary.

Five years.

She convinced herself that had to mean something. If she could just pull him away from the meetings, the family, the reputation that came with being a Cross-maybe, just maybe, they'd find their way back to who they once were.

Seraphina touched the gift box in her bag and headed to the suite.

The door wasn't fully shut.

She frowned. Lucian always locked doors.

She pushed it, just a little.

Before she could walk in, she heard a man's voice through the crack.

"After tonight, Seraphina won't be my problem anymore."

She stopped breathing.

For a moment, she just stood there. Those words didn't make any sense. Her brain refused to believe what her heart was starting to understand.

Problem?

He said her name. She hadn't misheard him.

Seraphina slowly let her hand drop, the one holding the wine bottle.

Maybe he was talking about someone else. Another Seraphina.

Ridiculous.

Then a woman's laugh floated out. Soft. Way too familiar.

Vivienne.

Vivienne Laurent.

Lucian's business partner. Always polished, always nearby. The woman who attended dinners and events with him, always seemed to know where he was when Seraphina didn't. She'd once smiled at Seraphina and said, "You don't have to worry about me. Lucian and I are practically family."

Seraphina had believed her. She'd even defended her when people gossiped. Defended Lucian, too.

Her fingers tightened around the bottle, digging in so hard it hurt.

She should have left.

She should have walked away before seeing something she could never unsee.

Instead, she pushed the door open.

The first thing she noticed was the wine. Not the bottle in her hand, but the chilled champagne beside the bed. Two glasses-one half-gone, one in Vivienne's hand.

A black silk dress on the floor.

Then Lucian, sitting against the headboard, white shirt hanging open, dark hair a mess. Vivienne next to him, wrapped up in the sheets.

Seraphina just stared.

Her mind scrambled for any innocent explanation.

There wasn't one.

The room spun under her feet.

She looked at Lucian, and suddenly five years flashed before her-wedding day, their first apartment, quiet mornings before work, anniversaries. All the memories she'd locked away, and now here they were, worthless.

And she was standing in a hotel room, watching the man she'd trusted with everything in bed with another woman.

"Lucian?"

Her voice sounded strange-even to her.

Vivienne's face changed fast, pulling the sheet tighter. Lucian didn't move, didn't scramble for clothes or stumble over excuses.

That hurt almost more than anything.

Seraphina stared at him, almost daring him to become the man she thought she knew. The man who'd come running, try to fix this, tell her she was wrong.

Instead, Lucian just reached for his shirt and pulled it on.

"Seraphina."

She let out a short laugh. Ragged, unbelieving.

"You knew I was coming."

She wasn't even asking.

Lucian's jaw clenched.

Vivienne cut in. "I didn't know she'd come tonight."

Seraphina whipped toward her.

"Tonight?"

Vivienne shut her mouth.

And something inside Seraphina crumpled. Tonight wasn't the problem. Tonight, she'd simply stumbled on a truth that had apparently been true for a while.

She stared at Lucian.

"How long?"

Silence.

"How long, Lucian?"

Nothing.

Her eyes burned.

"Was it before our anniversary? Before my birthday? Before that trip you canceled last minute?"

"Seraphina-"

"Don't."

The word came out sharper than she expected.

She stepped farther in.

The gift in her bag suddenly felt like a joke.

Earlier that day, she'd spent forever in front of a mirror, stressing over her dress, picking out Lucian's favorite wine, even writing a romantic letter about five years together.

Now she wanted to burn it all.

She squared her shoulders and looked at Vivienne.

"Is this why you were always with him?"

Vivienne's face went hard. "I never lied to you."

Seraphina stared.

"You were sleeping with my husband."

"I didn't make him come here."

Vivienne's voice was so calm, it was unreal.

Seraphina glanced at Lucian.

"Is that true?"

He stayed silent. Which said everything.

She could hardly breathe.

"You could have told me."

"I know."

"You could have ended our marriage before this."

"I know."

"You could've at least looked me in the eyes and said you didn't love me."

Something flickered in Lucian, and for the first time, he looked away. That broke her.

"Do you love her?"

Lucian looked back. Silence hung there.

She didn't know which would be worse-a lie, or the truth.

Finally, Lucian spoke.

"This marriage has been over for a long time."

Those words stung way worse than any confession.

She swallowed.

"How long?"

"I don't want to do this here."

"You're already doing it here." Her voice shook. "On our anniversary."

His face was cold, but his grip on the bed tightened. Maybe, for a second, something like regret flashed there-but then it was gone.

"You should go home."

Home. The word almost made her laugh. Was home that apartment where she waited for him to come back? The bed growing colder? Where she kept telling herself half a life with him was better than none?

She dug into her bag.

Lucian watched.

She pulled out the little black box, stared at it, then set it down on the table between them.

Vivienne looked, puzzled. "What is that?"

Seraphina ignored her.

She looked at Lucian.

"Happy anniversary."

Lucian's face changed, just barely. His eyes dropped to the box.

She turned away before he could see her tears. She forced herself not to break down in front of them. Five years spent being the woman who stayed; tonight she wasn't going to beg.

She headed for the door.

Lucian spoke. "Wait."

She stopped.

Behind her, she heard the bed creak.

She turned slowly.

Lucian wasn't looking at her. He was reaching for a black leather folder on the bedside table, under the champagne.

He picked it up, holding it out.

Seraphina stared.

"What is that?"

Lucian's expression was stone.

For the first time, she noticed something really cold in his eyes.

Not guilt, not shame-something final.

He offered the folder.

"Since you're here," his voice low, "we might as well make tonight useful."

Seraphina didn't move.

"What does that mean?"

Lucian opened it.

Her name stared back.

SERAPHINA VALE.

Underneath: PETITION FOR DIVORCE.

Her fingers went numb.

Lucian's voice was steady, almost gentle.

"I've already made my decision."

And just like that, Seraphina realized she hadn't stumbled into her husband's affair-she'd walked into the death of her marriage.

She didn't know it yet, but those divorce papers were about to open a door to a secret that had been waiting for her for twenty-five years.
