Chapter 1 Charter 1

The sky groaned with thunder as the storm rolled in, pressing heavy against the crooked rooftop like it wanted to rip the house apart. Kira sat barefoot on the cold, cracked floor, scrubbing the mud Mira had left behind. Her fingers were raw, knees aching, but she didn't stop ,not when she knew her stepmother would check it.

Not when Mira was still in the house.

A soft creak of the floorboard made her pause.

"You missed a spot," Mira said sweetly from behind her.

Kira looked up without lifting her head. Mira stood in the doorway with a smile too perfect to be kind, her arms folded over her silk nightgown. Her golden curls were pinned up neatly, makeup untouched despite the heat. She looked like she belonged in a royal ball, not in the same house that smelled like mold and ashes.

Kira didn't speak. That was the game: if you answered, Mira twisted it. If you stayed quiet, she got bored. Usually.

"I said, you missed a spot." Mira pointed her painted nail at the already-clean tile.

Kira scrubbed harder.

Mira stepped into the room and crouched beside her. "You know, you're lucky I let you stay here. If I hadn't begged Mama to keep you, you'd be dead in a ditch by now."

The brush in Kira's hand froze.

"There's nothing special about you, Kira," Mira whispered in her ear. "You're just a leftover. A ghost. A pity case."

The rain hit harder. Thunder cracked so loud it rattled the windows.

Mira stood and walked away, humming.

Kira sat still, gripping the brush so tight her hand shook but it wasn't from the cold.

It wasn't always like this.

She remembered laughter once her mother's, soft and full of sunshine. But that was before the fire, before the night she lost everything. Since then, it had been cold meals, dirt floors, and a silent war she never asked for.

Her body hurt, but her heart hurt more.

Night crept in fast, and the wind howled through the trees. Kira sat outside on the broken porch, clutching a mug of rainwater as she watched the forest breathe. It always seemed alive at night, too alive. The wind spoke in rustles, and the branches moved like they knew something.

She didn't know why, but the forest had always drawn her, made her feel safe.

It made her feel... seen.

Suddenly, she heard something crack. Not thunder. A branch.

Kira stood slowly, squinting into the dark.

Another sound. Closer this time.

She should go inside. She should run. But something rooted her to the ground. A strange pull. A hum in her bones.

Then she saw them.

Eyes.

Golden, glowing, and completely still.

They were watching her from just beyond the trees. Not blinking. Not human.

Kira's heart pounded against her ribs. She stepped back, but not fast enough.

A shape emerged from the shadows.

Tall. Covered in black fur. Limbs too long. Chest rising and falling with slow, deliberate breaths. A wolf not like the ones in books.

Bigger. Older. Smarter.

The world around her narrowed. The wind stopped. The rain slowed. Everything was quiet, except her heartbeat and the creature's breath.

It didn't growl. It didn't pounce.

It lowered its head.

Kira gasped.

Her vision blurred. Heat surged through her veins. Her chest tightened.

And then pain.

Like fire ripping through her spine.

She screamed, fell to her knees, clutching her ribs as something inside her snapped.

Her bones twisted.

Her skin burned.

Her eyes, they felt like they were turning inside out.

She couldn't breathe.

She couldn't scream.

She was shifting, turning into one of them.

Until the world vanished

She didn't know how long it lasted, only that when she woke, she was lying in the wet grass.

The rain had stopped.

The golden eyes were gone.

But when she sat up and saw her reflection in the puddle beneath her, she didn't recognize herself.

Her eyes were glowing.

Footsteps kept coming close to her.heavy and confident.

She turned sharply, still trembling.

From between the trees stepped a man.

Tall. Built like a warrior. Drenched in shadows.

Black hair. Silver eyes. Alpha presence.

He looked at her like he already knew her. Like he'd been searching for her.

And when he spoke, his voice made her bones hum.

"You shifted."

Kira's lips parted, but no words came.

"Who are you?" she finally whispered.

The man's lips curled.

"The one you were born to find."
