Chapter 1 BORN FORBIDDEN

THE ANCIENT: An Underground World for White Witches

My name is Katerina. Sometimes, I wonder who even chose this name for me. As I scrubbed the last stubborn stain from a dish, I glanced toward the kitchen door. There stood Aunt Jo, her smile warm and tender-an oasis in my endless desert of pain. I couldn't help but return it. Smiling through suffering had become second nature; after all, I'd spent countless nights washing a thousand dishes alone.

Yesterday's palace feast had been grand, but no one had lifted a finger to help me clean up. It was always this way.

All because of my mother.

Lady Liza entered, balancing a stack of plates. A princess should never be burdened with chores like this, but Liza hated me-more fiercely than I hated my mother. I'm certain of it. Aunt Jo slipped away quietly, and Liza dropped the plates with a sneer before pushing my head roughly.

"You should never come out of here!" she spat, venom dripping from her words.

I wiped the spit from my cheek and kept washing. Eighteen years of torment had taught me one thing-endurance.

If only my mother hadn't fallen in love with a human-if only she hadn't had me. Maybe then I wouldn't exist, wouldn't suffer this much. Liza was born the same day I was, a cruel twist of fate that fueled her hatred. My mother was cast away-banished to some unknown place. I don't even know who my grandparents are. Aunt Jo-my mother's little sister was forced into servitude, tasked with raising me, her own dreams shattered because of my existence- because of my mother.

For centuries , the young witches of the Ancient watched the human world with quiet curiosity. At dusk, they would fly silently on their broomsticks, looking into the lives of humans. But after I was born, they were not allowed to do this anymore-because, that's how my mother found my father. You can imagine how much the witches in the Ancient hated me, they can't explore the human world like they used to anymore.

Unlike the others, I was powerless-just a mere human trapped in their world. I watched Liza and her best friends Gem, and Melissa practice magic with their eyes, their hands, their wands. I was useless.

"Katerinaaaaaaaa!!" The Queen's voice cut through the kitchen like a whip.

I hated her more than my mother. The Queen ruled the Ancient with iron will and unmatched power. Sluggishly, I left the kitchen to face her summons.

By the royal dining passage, the Queen stood, her feet bleeding-pierced by something sharp. Was it my fault she chose to walk barefoot during their dark rituals? Sometimes I wondered if they were truly white witches at all.

I bowed.

"A plate broke here, and you didn't clean it?" Her eyes bulged with fury.

"I was in the kitchen all night," I said calmly.

Her hand struck my cheek hard.

"You forbidden child!" she hissed.

Her venomous words stung less with time.

"You've spoiled the ritual!" an elder spat. "Blood must not be seen!"

The Queen screamed, eyes wild, breathing ragged. "Katerina!"

I rolled my eyes and bent to pick up the shards. Aunt Jo rushed in, falling to her knees.

"My Queen, please forgive us! Please!" she begged.

I looked at my aunt-always the one to take the blame, even when I was innocent. It hurt, knowing my mother had placed her here, yet she loved me fiercely.

"Guards!" The Queen's voice thundered.

Two guards appeared instantly.

"At six tonight, Jo's head will fall in the town square. Perhaps then Katerina will learn her place!"

Aunt Jo collapsed, tears streaming, yet the guards held her and the y disappeared into thin air-to the prison yard.

"You can't kill my aunt! She's all I have!" I cried, my voice breaking.

The Queen sneered. "Your aunt? She's your mother!"

With that, she turned and left with the elders.

I sank to the ground, shock freezing me. Then, desperation took hold-I ran toward the prison yard.
