Chapter 1 The Ceremony

I felt the pressure of all eyes on me as I stood on the edge of the clearing. Silver light seemed to pierce the darkness as the moon shone full and high. I had both feared and dreamed of this moment, the Ceremony where fortunes are sealed and mates are chosen. I thought my heart could explode through my chest from the force of the slam.

The pack waited in silence. In addition to the pungent fragrance of moist dirt and pine, I could also sense something raw and primordial wolf sweat, anticipation, and something darker, deep in the ground. All faces were turned to the circle in the middle, where the Alpha stood, his eyes like molten steel, his majesty and immobility.

I had anticipated this. I believed I was. I had practiced, managed my feelings, and was ready to assert my rights. However, uncertainty gnawed at me now that I was here, on the brink of everything I knew. But what if I was mistaken? But what if I wasn't welcome?

Then the time arrived. The Alpha's dominating, low voice pierced the darkness. The ceremony started. I took a step forward. I could feel the electricity in the ground beneath me. Despite my racing heart, I forced myself to remain still.

The partner I had been waiting years to claim, Kian Blackwood, was there. His presence was like a storm in the clearing. His ferocious, impenetrable gaze met mine. The air between us was dense when I swallowed. Everything would alter at this point, for better or worse.

The ceremony went quickly. Touch, breath, a whispered promise the old traditions of the pack enveloped us like a shroud. His fingers brushed across mine, and I could feel the heat. The world briefly shrank to just the two of us. Then something broke. A change, abrupt and cruel.

Kian's eyes blazed, but they were chilly instead of warm as I had thought. His hold became painfully tight. My breath caught. Bewilderment, incredulity, and then the inexplicable reality became as solid as ice. He didn't want me as a partner. Not the partner he chose.

He turned away before I could respond, before my heart could completely break. He had a stone face. Although he didn't yell, his rejection was audible. Stunned, the pack watched. Shock and treachery weighed heavily on the air as it thickened.

I stood there, vulnerable, by myself. The circle formed around me, but I didn't feel the warmth I had anticipated. Rather than any wound, the icy, jagged burn of shame went deeper.

Then the murders began. From somewhere deeper, not simply the pack, an old, gloomy voice rose in my head. I was unaware of the shadow that resided within me. I was stronger than I thought, the voice said. That rejection marked a new beginning rather than the conclusion.

I made an effort to quiet it. tried to hold on to the fragments of who I believed myself to be. However, the voice became louder and more demanding. I felt a fire flare up inside of me as I clenched my hands; it was fueled by betrayal, pain, and an appetite I had never experienced before. The alteration was noticed by the pack. I sensed their wonder and fear.

My status as a rejected mate has changed. I was something different. Something hazardous. Then I noticed a figure in the shadows, observing from the trees, moving at the edge of the clearing. I sensed his authority even if I didn't recognize him. It was fierce and old. He grinned, but it wasn't a warm one.

His voice was low and silky, and he moved forward before I could turn or shout.

"You're not as isolated as you believe."

The pack stiffened, uncertain, cautious.

My heart thumping with questions I dared not ask, I gazed at him. The ground shook beneath us then. Something evil and ancient was waking up.

The Ceremony turned into a war of secrets and shadows as the night engulfed us.

There was an unnatural quake beneath my feet. It wasn't just a change in the ground or the earth settling. It was a living thing. An furious thing. The trees surrounding us trembled like anxious fingers as they whispered warnings.

There was silence among the pack. Even the Alpha's stony eyes darted in search of something in the shadowy woods.

The shadows around him rippled as though the night itself were obeying the stranger as he took a step closer. His power seemed to be pulling at the borders of my own strength, like a magnetic force, and I could feel the fire burning inside of me from the rejection. Although he remained silent, his presence conveyed a message. That's when I realized my rejection wasn't an accident.

This ceremony was not your typical one.

In the wings, something sinister had been watching and waiting for the time when I would be discarded. The muttered voice inside of me became stronger, blending with the odd pull from the stranger's aura, and my skin prickled. I was marked, not just rejected. My attention was suddenly drawn to a flash of silver.

Kian's wolf had come out, muscles clenched to strike, teeth exposed, eyes gleaming like molten gold. But he wasn't looking at me. The stranger had it locked.

The tension blew up. With growls and snarls filling the air, the pack moved as one, with some transforming into wolves.

The stranger's lips curled into a chilly smile once more.

He remarked, "You have no idea what you're protecting." His voice sounded like venom wrapped in silk. "And you're unaware of what you've lost." The ground near the middle of the circle burst open before anyone could respond. Twisting and writhing like a living nightmare, a shadow darker than the night emerged from the fissure. Breath left my lungs frozen as a chill struck me.

Fear gleaming in their eyes, the pack faltered. With a loud voice, the Alpha commanded the shadows to retreat as he stepped forward. The darkness, however, disobeyed.Rather, it extended its hand to me. I staggered back, my heart thumping.

For a minute, I saw glimpses of a past I was unaware of, a power hidden deep within that was only waiting to be released, while the shadow, cold as death, stroked over my skin.

The stranger grinned more broadly.

"The key is you." All of my instincts told me to go, to escape this darkness that had a hold on my spirit. But I was held in place by something more profound, something ferocious and uncompromising.

I was the target of the pack's anxiety, uncertainty, and perplexity. The Alpha snarled, telling me to back off and turn away from the shadows. However, I was unable to. Promises of strength, retribution, and a means of changing the terrible fate that had been delivered to me were uttered by the darkness.

My hand was shaking when I reached out and touched the dark. It was chilly. It was ravenous. I owned it. I felt a tremendous, chaotic rush that tore apart the fragments of the girl who had just been standing on the edge of the clearing. I wasn't damaged. I was waking up. With a nod of approval, the stranger disappeared like smoke into the trees. Fear of the unknown and the power I now possessed was evident in their eyes as the pack closed in on me.

Kian gave me another look, but this time he was no longer chilly. Something more sinister, something perilous, took its place.

My voyage had barely begun, but the Ceremony was done.

And I had a hungry shadow inside of me.
