Chapter 1 A mysterious call

Justin heaved a sigh as he relaxed into the chair. He closed his eyes in anger and disappointment as yet another effort yielded no result. How long would things remain unfruitful like that?

Hot tears welled up in his blue eyes as he stared up at the ceiling and angrily ran his fingers through his brown hair.

He had applied to several companies all at the same time with the hope of at least one being favorable to him, but once again, they all rejected him with the excuse of him not having the working experience they needed, while some just plainly told him they decided not to hire him for no reason in particular.

When would things start to get easy for him? He wanted to smash his phone out of anger but managed to control himself. He hadn't noticed Florence, who stood at the entrance and stared with empathy in her gray eyes at her husband.

"Justin, are you okay?" Florence asked as she walked towards him. She sat down next to him and squeezed his hand. "Is everything alright?"

He forced a smile on his face as he stared at his wife. He moved closer to her, pushed a strand of brunette hair behind her ear and caressed her cheek for a minute.

"As expected, they all rejected me." He expressed a dejected sigh.

Justin Hickson was married to Florence Anderson, the daughter of a very wealthy family, and they loved each other deeply. Florence's family hated Justin for being poor and jobless, and they were very angry at her for getting married to a poor man like him.

Justin was never a man to slack off, he did everything he could to provide for his wife, but oddly, not a single company in London was willing to offer him employment.

Florence forced a smile on her face. She knew her family had exercised enough patience for him and if he couldn't find a job soon, they would force her to divorce him and marry her off to the man they had always wanted for her, Henry Grey, having the fact that he was a multi-millionaire.

"Honey..." She said as she took his hands in hers. "Why don't you talk to my mom? She could probably give you a job at our company, don't you think?"

"Your mom?" Justin asked with an expression that made it obvious that he felt she would never give him the job.

"We will never know until we try." She smiled.

"But you know how she is and how much she despises me."

"Don't say that, you don't know what her reaction will be if you decide to just sit here and assume she won't give you a job." She squeezed his hands.

She didn't want to end up with Henry, he was twice her age if not more, and she despised him so much.

"I just don't want any problems for you and me. What if I just keep trying? Who knows, I might get lucky next time."

"But my love, do you know how many times we have said that? Are there even any other companies left here in London for you to apply to? Haven't we tried them all?" Her lips fell to an upside-down smile.

"Not all of them. I can keep trying and..."

"Justin, I am not against you trying," she raised her hand to his cheek and gently caressed it. "But while you are trying, let us also try this." A dim smile crept into her face.

He moved closer to her and pressed his lips on hers lightly for a split second before pulling back. "Alright then, I will do things the way you want me to." He forced a smile. He planted a kiss on her forehead as he rose to his feet, picked up his coat and rushed to leave the house.

"Justin, wait..." She sighed. He didn't hear her as he was already outside the house when she called him. At the sound of the door being shut, she placed her hand on her stomach. "I'm pregnant..." Her lips curved into a sad smile.

Justin strolled aimlessly on the road, thinking about his life. When he was but a child, he was adopted and raised by the Andersons but they never really treated him as one of their own.

As he grew older, there was only one person who always had something nice to say to him and her words always kept him going. That was Florence.

As Florence finally told her mother, Sofia and her father about how she felt for Justin and the fact that she wanted to get married to him, they immediately refused because he was poor. But Florence didn't let this stop her from being with the one she loved, not minding what her family would do as she went against their will and married Justin.

They couldn't hate their own daughter, so instead they pushed all the hatred on Justin. They never had one nice thing to say to him, and they always made his life terrible in every single way they could.

Now Justin was getting worried, he desperately needed a job, but he didn't tell his wife, he couldn't. He had reached out to her mother, Sofia, only a few weeks ago, pleading with her to employ him at her company.

Her response wasn't such a friendly one.

"You want me to give you a job at my company?" She asked with a mocking look on her face.

"Yes, please, I promise to do everything you ask me to do, and I will never go against any rules in this company." Justin pleaded.

She stared at him with a mocking gaze, then all of a sudden, she burst into laughter, cackling loudly. "You are such a jester." She laughed out loud.

Justin felt his level of pride reduced to the lowest, he already had a feeling she would react in such a way. "Sofia please--"

"Get out of my office before I call the security on you --what am I even doing?" She picked up the office landline to make a call.

"I'm leaving, I am leaving already, please don't bother, there is no need for you to call for security." Justin immediately sprung to his feet and started for the door.

"You useless piece of trash! Never return to my company or else I will get you arrested!" She snapped.

After such an unfriendly encounter, would he really be able to return to her again if she could really get him arrested?

He sat on a bench under the shade of a slightly larger tree. Its leaves had changed color due to the autumn season and the cool air caused his exposed skin to tingle in a good way.

He closed his eyes and relaxed into the chair, heaving a relaxing sigh as he felt the autumn wind slowly drift his problems away. The sound of the four wheelers and other kinds of motorcycles that passed by were just like a lovely lullaby as it mixed with the music of the wind and Justin felt comforted.

At the sound of his ringtone, Justin jolted awake. He shook his head to clear the sleep in his eyes as he took out his phone from his pocket. He stared at the number, it was strange and unknown and he felt anxiety swallow him whole as he stared at the vibrating device in his hand, he thought to himself; 'could it be from a company?'
