Chapter 1 The Crimson Moon

Kael Draven's POV

The moon bled red.

It wasn't the first time Kael had seen it like this, but it never stopped making the breath hitch in his throat. The sky above Blackthorn Ridge looked like it was soaked in wine - blood-colored clouds swimming around the swollen full moon that hung like an omen.

A reminder.

A warning.

A curse.

He stood at the cliff's edge, the icy wind tearing through his dark coat, unmoved by the bite of the cold. Beneath him, the valley stretched for miles, shadowed and quiet. No birds. No wolves. No life.

Not since the night they all died.

Kael clenched his jaw as the memory threatened to rise - the screams, the scent of burning fur, the sound of bones snapping beneath claw and flame. He hadn't spoken their names in five years. Speaking them brought the curse closer. And he was the last one left. The last Draven. The last Alpha of a bloodline that had once ruled every pack from mountain to sea.

And now, the curse pulsed through him like poison.

Every woman he touched. Every soul he claimed. Dead before the next full moon.

He had loved once. Twice. The moon took both.

So now, he loved no one.

A low growl rumbled in his chest. His wolf clawed beneath the surface, restless, agitated by the moon's crimson call. But Kael didn't shift. He didn't dare.

Not when the moon looked like this.

He turned, ready to head back to the hollow beneath the mountain where he slept alone every night since the bloodbath. But then-he stopped.

There was a scent on the wind.

Faint. Feminine. Not pack.

Rogue.

He inhaled again. This time slower. Wildflowers. Ash. Something broken.

And... something terrifyingly familiar.

His heart slammed once against his ribs.

He shouldn't care. Rogues died out here all the time. His territory was marked with bones for a reason. But this scent-this one-called something ancient awake in him.

Something buried.

He moved fast, feet silent against the earth. Down the ridge. Through the frost-laced trees. The scent grew stronger. Sharper.

Then, he saw her.

Collapsed beneath the roots of an old whitewood tree, blood smeared across her temple, her hands curled into fists as if she'd fought something bigger than her body could handle. Her wolf hadn't shifted. She was unconscious. Breathing, barely.

Kael stared.

He should leave her.

She would die by morning if he didn't. The woods would eat her alive. Or his curse would.

His curse always did.

But then, the wind shifted again.

And he saw it.

A mark burned into the skin just below her collarbone - half hidden, half glowing beneath her torn shirt.

A crescent moon. Pointed downward.

His blood turned to ice.

That was impossible.

That mark belonged to the prophecy.

The one every Alpha child was warned about. The one spoken in whispers when the blood moon rose. The one that said:

When the Last Alpha meets the Moon's Chosen, the curse will break... or the world will.

Kael Draven stepped forward.

And fate, once again, stepped in.
