She looked at me this time and opened her mouth to stand on her decision, but my puppy eyes and sad pout got her quiet and slowly put a smile on her face.
"I don't know how you manage to make me do everything you want, even when I don't want to. I wonder how I'll be a good mother to you if I can't resist your cuteness. I always fall for these eyes of yours", she muttered with a sigh, and I giggled.
As she turned to the trader in his shop, I jumped in excitement.
"Please get me that black toy car... Yes, that one", she pointed to the toy I asked for.
"Please buy three, so we can give Papa and Antonia, my sister, one. I'm sure he'd like that blue. It looks like a monster, it's kind of cute. I'm sure he'd like it", I noted.
"Angelo, the black one is already too expensive. You want us to buy three of them? No. That will not be possible-"
"Please, mama? Pretty please?" I pleaded again, and she sighed.
"I need to stop looking into your eyes whenever I'm trying to set a standard", she muttered as she agreed to buy two.
"You have a very smart boy, ma'am. He's just seven, but he acts like he's an adult", the trader complimented.
"What can I say? Thank you", she said. "Plus, I'm doing this because it's his birthday."
The toys were finally purchased, and I held them to my chest, snuggling them like they were my children.
"Now that we got what you want, can we go home now?" she asked, and I nodded repeatedly with a grin on my face.
She walked me out of the market and we took the bus home. Throughout the ride, I was engrossed in the conversations I was having with my new fluffy friends, snuggling them from time to time in pure happiness.
"Your father's calling", she said when we got into the bus.
"Tell him we got him a surprise!"I giggled in boyish excitement, but she gently shushed me immediately and put the phone on speaker.
"Hello, honey?"
"Wh.... Where are you?" He asked, sounding like he had just finished running a mile.
"I'm on the back home with our son-"
"Take him away."
"What?"
"Don't bring him."
"Are you okay, honey?"
"Whatever you do, d... don't bring Angelo back into this..."
"Into where?" my mother asked, a little concerned, but he ended the call.
Maybe he was trying to prank us like he always did.
We finally got off the bus, and after we trekked a little distance, we could see our modest house in the distance.
We finally got to our doorstep and Mum searched for the keys in her bag. She got it out and proceeded to unlock the door.
"Angelo?" she called.
"Yes, mum?" I looked up from the teddies.
"Didn't we lock the door before we left for the market?" she asked.
"I think we did. I remember double-checking before we took the bus", I replied.
"Then why..."
I was confused by her question, and when I checked to see what the fuss was all about. That was when I saw the door slightly ajar.
"Maybe we didn't close it", I mumbled absentmindedly, my focus on the teddies.
She hesitated a little, but we finally got into the house.
"Daddy! Daddy, where are you?!! I got something for you!!" I yelled at the top of my voice in sheer excitement as I ran into the house. "Antonia!! Come see what your brother bought for you!!"
"Honey?" I heard my mum call as she followed me into the room.
We didn't hear any response, and we kept calling his name.
My mum finally found the switch, and the bulbs flicked on immediately.
"Dad!! We-", I suddenly felt my mother grab me close to her and cover my mouth with shaky hands.
I could hear her heart beating fast as she drew me close.
"Shhhh, don't make a sound", she whispered into my ear.
"What's wrong, mum?" I questioned in a low but confused voice.
"Someone broke into our house", she answered.
I looked around, and I noticed the entire living room was in chaos. The sofas were turned upside down. The TV screen was shattered. The windows were broken.
She picked me up and we tiptoed down the narrow hallway to my parents' room.
The room was dark, but I could make out a lifeless figure lying on the ground, just by the bedside.
I guess my mom saw it too, because she began walking towards that direction. She searched for the light switch, and the dim lamp holder on the bedside drawer flicked on, and the image came to full view.
My eyes widened in utter shock as I saw my father lying lifeless on the ground in a pool of his blood. His eyes were open, but dark. I could see a long, weird-looking knife seethed deep into his chest. Blood was still oozing out of it.
"Aaaaaaarrrrgggghhhhhh!!!" I didn't know when a cry of terror escaped my lungs.
My mum immediately covered my mouth with her sweaty palm.
"Stop shouting! We don't know if the people who killed are still here-"
She was interrupted by loud yells of a barbaric nature down the hallway.
"Did you hear that?!", we heard one of them yell.
"That was the voice of a young girl!"
"How did we miss them?!"
"I don't know, but we need to take care of them now!!" The voices and rough footsteps drawing nearer....
