A hundred and sixty years after the dragon bloods attacked the earth and a mysterious stone shattered, granting humans abilities. Mason blackwood is one of the few to not have awakened abilities. But after a night of being chased by neo-thieves and falling off a cliff, Mason unlocks the demon system, allowing him to grow strong as he unlocks more skills. And through the system, he discovers that a second war is coming. A war between the humans and dragon bloods and one that might perhaps wipe out the entire human race. And this time around, he might the only one who can stop it.
"Everyone, hurry. Mason Blackwood is at it again." A boy with curly blonde hair yelled as he barge into the classroom, his face soaked with sweat. He looked to have been running for a while and immediately ran back out after saying those words.
Immediately, the whole class ran out after him, each one going close to the edge of the balcony to see what was happening below. From up there, they could see it all clearly, a black haired boy and a green haired boy looked to be in some sort of heated argument as a little crowd gathered around them, cheering their names.
"You piece of useless crap, I will teach you never to mess with me again." The green haired boy yelled, his eyes glowing yellow with rage.
"Oh do you ever shut up Drake? Just come at me already." Mason, the black haired boy said with a grin as blood dropped from the little cut on his face. He looked to have been fighting for a while and was nearly out of stamina. One could see that he was barely hanging on with sheer will only.
As the crowd continued to cheer their names, the green haired rushed at him and threw a punch at his face but Mason was quick to move to the left, dodging the punch before landing a punch of his own at the boy's head. The crowd cheered as the punch landed on the boy's head.
Seeing this, the boy began to boil with rage as his yellow eyes glowed brighter. The next minute, a heavy gush of wind rushed out of his palm and headed forward towards Mason who was too slow to move to safety. The heavy wind swept him off his feet and threw him several meters away. Mason landed on the wall with a loud bang before falling on the floor, unable to move.
"Serves you right." The green haired boy said with a grin and brushed his nose before walking off, leaving the crowd behind.
"Damn it, I really thought he was going to win this time around." A male voice said from the crowd with a little snicker.
"Yeah, me too. But at the end, he's still just a powerless piece of crap." Another boy chipped in.
"I can't believe that marks his three hundred and twenty eight defeat since he began Avalon school. If it were me, I'd just quit." Someone said with a laugh as the crowd began to disperse until they was no one left there anymore.
Meanwhile, Mason laid on the ground with his chest heaving up and down as he took deep breaths to calm himself down. He tried to move but winced in pain as that part hurt a lot. It seemed a rib had broken there and would take some time to heal.
Just then, he heard the school bell ring indicating that it was time to go home. And with every ounce of strength he had left, Mason managed to get up as he headed down towards Beverly town where his house laid.
As he walked, he couldn't help but think back to the fight he just had with Drake, to how he was gaining the upper hand until Drake had decided to use his ability, the wind attribute. It was his three hundred and twenty eight defeat now, and each time he lost woefully.
In a world overrun by power and ability users, Mason was one of the majority to have not awakened an ability. And because he attended Avalon academy, a school filled with ability users and very few ordinary humans, he was often bullied.
But as the bullying went on, Mason had learn to defend himself and would only lose whenever his opponent activated their ability. But the fact that he kept losing bothered him and everyday he kept praying that he would awakened an ability, only he was seventeen years of age now and nothing has happened so far.
As Mason rounded a bend that led to the next street, he came across a huge poster that always intrigued him and pause. It was an image of five neohumans, a term used to describe ability users fighting against five dragon bloods, humanity worse enemy.
One hundred and sixty years ago, when humanity did not have neohumans, a horde of dragon bloods descended on earth from another world, destroying everything in it's part. They were a race made from real dragons with the urge to kill and dominate everything in their part.
How they came to earth and what they wanted was a mystery to humans and because humanity was unprepared, countless lives were lost and many homes destroyed. Humanity was at the brink of extinction as their weapons were rendered useless against them. And that was when it happened, a large rock came flying through the rift that the dragon bloods had past through, smashing into million of pieces and transforming into a blue mist by the time it shattered.
And as humans began to inhale the strange mist that had now mixed with the ecosystem, they awakened special abilities and were then revered to as neohumans. With the neohumans in sight, humanity now stood a chance against the dragon bloods. And as the war went on, humanity managed to defeat the dragon bloods and drive them away from earth.
But with fear of them ever returning, the government created an organization of neohumans that would one day help fight against the dragon bloods if they were to ever returned. And Mason who was born and grew up at the orphanage has always hope to awakened an ability and become a powerful neohuman that will one day fight against the dragon bloods like those drawn in the picture in front of him right now. But with each passing day, the dream of becoming a neohuman seem impossible to reach and there was nothing he could do to change that.
With a long sigh, Mason turned and walked away, heading down towards the orphanage with a downhearted look on his face.
By the time he got to the orphanage, it was already dark as he couldn't walk fast due to how weak his body was from the fight earlier. But on getting to the orphanage, Mason composed himself with a smile on his face, trying hard to hide the pain from Harper, a woman in her fourthies who has been looking after him and what was left of the orphanage.
She was a former neohuman who was dismissed from work after she had lost one of her leg during a mission that went wrong. She then went home to take over the orphanage that her parent were running before they had pass away. Since then, she had been the one raising the little children at the orphanage and Mason had been grateful to her so far.
"Open up Mrs Harper, I'm home!" Mason yelled as he knocked on the door repeatedly. A few moments later, the door opened up to reveal an angry Mrs Harper who was standing by the door with the help of her crutches.
"You're late Mason, again." Mrs Harper said with an angry tone while Mason chuckled as he walked past her.
"Come on Mrs Harper, I'm not a kid anymore you know. I'm seventeen now." Mason said as he walked towards the dinner table were everyone were seated. They were about ten in number including Mason and Mrs Harper and they seemed to have been waiting for him.
"What took you so long brother Mason. Did you get into a fight again?" A little girl of about the age of five said while pouting her lips.
"Of course not Dolly. Besides, your big bro is really strong okay." Mason replied and gently tap her head while she smiled.
"I'm not so sure about that since I've never seen you win a fight before." Sabrina, a girl who looked to be around the age of Mason said with a laugh.
"Or maybe you just weren't there when I had my wins." Mason retorted and the two broke down laughing.
"Alright you two. Enough with the jokes . It's time to eat." Mrs Harper said as she took her seat while Mason nodded as they began eating.
As they ate, Mason couldn't help but smile as he glanced at everyone's faces. This was his favorite time of day. The only time he truly felt at home. Although they weren't related by blood, they were still one big family. And often, Mason would wish he awakened as a neohuman so he could become rich enough to protect his family. And one day, he hope, that some God out there might eventually listen to him and grant him his wish.
