Hazel's POV
I never imagined my life would come to this-standing in a hospital hallway, my palms sweaty as I clutched a file like it was my last lifeline.
"Are you deaf, Dr. Hayes?" My senior surgeon's voice cut through my thoughts like a scalpel. "I asked for the updated patient report, not this mess!"
"I-I followed your orders, sir," I swallowed hard, my throat dry, barely able to meet his eyes. I'd sent him the wrong file, but he'd never specified which one.
"Shut up! You should know better!" His voice was sharp, laced with disdain.
I slumped my shoulders. "Sorry, sir. It won't happen again."
But he wasn't satisfied.
"Enough excuses!" He slammed the file onto his desk as I winced and the sting of his words cut deeper than I wanted to admit.
"You're lucky Kelvin told me you're not feeling well today. Take the rest of the day off before you kill someone with your incompetence."
Kelvin.
The name sent a flicker of warmth through me, but I didn't have time to dwell on it. My mind was already elsewhere-on home. On them.
"Mommy, don't go!"
Noelle's small voice echoed in my head, the way she had clung to me this morning, refusing to let go of my leg.
She never did that. Noelle was the strongest of my triplets-independent, fearless. But today, something had felt... off.
"I'll be back soon, baby," I had reassured her, smoothing her curls.
But even as I walked out the door, I couldn't shake the feeling that she knew something I didn't.
"What are you still doing here?" he snapped, bringing me out of my thoughts, his voice hard. "Leave before I change my mind."
Well, I didn't need to be told twice. With that, I gave a stiff nod, turned on my heel, and walked out before my pride could take any more hits.
Reaching outside Mr Hayes office, I leaned against the wall, as I let out a shaky breath and then, I pulled out my phone only to see it was 6pm.
"Day off, huh?" I scoffed only to realized I have had no messages from Kelvin.
Not that I expected any though, because I knew I haven't been treating him well despite him being my boyfriend.
No one could blame because I wish I could but I can't bring myself to love him because since the day I left my pack behind, Kelvin had been the only constant thing in my life, so were my triplets.
And all of this happened because of one man.
Ethan.
The man I once loved.
The man who I was supposed to be his Luna and him my Alpha and forever.
Only to be rejected and scorned by him.
The name still tasted like poison on my tongue, so as memory of his rejection was still raw, even after seven years. I'd believed him when he said we were mates, that we were destined to rule the pack together. But it was all a lie. He'd used me, humiliated me, and shattered my trust.
However, I pushed the thoughts aside as I stepped outside, the cool evening air brushing against my skin.
Then, my stomach began growling, reminding me I hadn't eaten all day so, I found myself standing in front of a small restaurant, staring at the menu through the glass.
With that, the thought of my triplets came to my mind as Kelvin was with them, as always, and I trusted him to take care of them as he knew they were my light in the darkness and the only reason I kept going even when it felt impossible.
Inside, the warmth of the restaurant wrapped around me. Families laughed and chatted at their tables, their happiness a stark contrast to the emptiness I carried.
Then, a waitress approached, smiling politely. "Ma'am, what would you like to order?"
"A cup of coffee," I told the waitress, my voice barely above a whisper as I watched her leave my table.
With that, I decided to take pleasure in the moment of ease, so I had my seat by the window, watching a little girl play outside. Her laughter was pure, untainted by the world's cruelty as her parents watched her lovingly, their eyes full of pride.
I swallowed hard.
Noelle had that same laugh.
The same sparkle in her eyes whenever she looked at me, the same boundless energy. But lately, she'd been quieter. Clingier.
Was something wrong? Had I been too distracted with work to notice?
"I'll make it up to you, baby girl," I uttered silently to myself. "I'll make it up to all of you."
Then, a pang of longing hit me, which made me realize I hadn't spoken to my father since I left the pack. But the thoughts of him hating me for abandoning them wore harder on me as I began wondering if he even thinks of me anymore.
But soon, the waitress returned with my order letting me out of my thoughts, and I forced a smile as she set the cup down. "Here you go miss, would you like anything else?" She asked.
"No, thank you," I replied softly, offering a small smile in return.
Then, I began sipping my coffee as my mind wandered back to Ethan. His betrayal had been the final push that drove me to leave.
I'd wanted to be his Luna, to stand beside him as his mate, but I'd been nothing than a pawn in his game.
This made my fists clenched as the memory of his cruel words seven years ago were still echoing in my mind.
"You're not my mate, Hazel. You never were. This pack deserves better than you."
The hurt felt as fresh as the day he said it.
However, I shook my head, pushing the memory away as I wouldn't let him have power over me anymore.
After some minutes had gone by, I finally made my way out of the restaurant as the night had settled in and the streets were quiet while the weight of the day pressed down on me.
I walked back to my apartment, the silence inside greeting me like an old friend as the kids were with Kelvin for the evening and I was all by myself in my apartment.
With that, I took out my laptop, determined to get some work done, but just as I was about to dive into it, my phone buzzed in my pocket.
And instantly, I frowned immediately I realized it was Kelvin.
"He never called this late, are the kids fine?" I wondered to myself as I picked up the call immediately.
"Hello?" I said.
"Hazel." His voice was warm, but something felt... off.
I sat up straighter. "I just got home. Is everything okay?" I inquired as silence clouded the air.
My stomach tightened.
"Kelvin?"
"I... I don't know how to say this over the phone." His voice was strained. "You need to come home immediately."
Every nerve in my body went on high alert as I felt so unsettled. "What happened? Are my kids okay?"
Another pause erupted.
"Speak!" I yelled as I couldn't take the tension anymore.
"It's Noelle." he finally spoke as the world tilted beneath me.
My breath caught in my throat. "What happened to my child?"
His voice broke. "Something bad has happened to Noelle."
