"You filthy Omega, what have I been telling you about punctuality?" Luna yelled at the young lady kneeling before her, who was trembling in fear.
Luna was the head of the servants in the manor of Alpha Marcus and she was a disciplinarian who would never overlook even a little mistake. Every servant feared her.
"F... Forgive me, my lady..." The young lady, Elena pleaded feverishly. Her head was spinning and her lips were quivering.
"I am sick. That was why I took the afternoon off and came in late ..." Elena was saying but Luna cut her short immediately.
"And who gave you the permission? Have you suddenly lost your wit? Have you forgotten who you are?" Luna asked her voice stern, totally unfazed by the sick state of the young lady.
"You are an Omega, you don't have the time to be sick. Who is going to attend to the Alpha's needs if you lay in bed, nursing your filthy body?" She yelled, sounding as if Elena was the only servant around, out of the numerous servants in the Alpha's manor.
Elena clenched her fists by her sides as she tried to steady her breath and voice. She felt fainting.
"Forgive me, my lady." She muttered and Luna hissed angrily, refusing to be pacified.
"Get up now. You are in charge of the Alpha's evening tea. You know he wants his tea prepared freshly in his presence... Get some brewed herbs from the kitchen and go and make the tea for him." Luna barked the order at Elena.
"His meeting has just ended and he is already on his way. He has to meet you in the room waiting for him. You sure know that failure to do that will cost you your life, don't you?" She asked the lady casually as if she was talking about the great weather.
"Yes, my lady." Elena maintained, her voice hoarse but she was trying to make it sound firm.
Without another word being exchanged between the duo, Elena stood up and rushed to the kitchen, hurrying as best as her trembling, sick body could carry her.
"I am so sorry." A voice said behind Elena as she walked out of the kitchen, carrying the tea tray in her hands. Without turning back, she knew the owner of the voice.
"Why are you sorry, Rhea? You are not the cause of my misfortune. And aren't we even in it together?" Elena asked her friend as the latter walked to her front.
"I would love to help you... To at least combine your tasks with mine but Luna won't allow it." Rhea told her, her voice laced with concern.
"I know, Rhea so don't feel bad for not being able to help. I can manage. Thank you." Elena replied, ignoring the pang of pain that was surging through her whole body whenever she opened her mouth to talk.
"That witch!" Rhea mumbled under her breath, referring to Luna, then she heaved a sigh as she remembered what had caused Elena's sickness.
"I knew your body would definitely break down after the punishment you have undergone yesterday." Rhea pointed out.
"Don't worry. We are going to get through this, I am certain." Rhea told her friend, reassuringly. The latter smiled sadly at the level of confidence Rhea was using to talk.
"I doubt we are ever going to escape this shitty life." Elena muttered, shaking her head in pessimism. That was because they had lived their whole lives as Omega and there seemed to be no end to it.
"I am..." Rhea was trying to make her friend believe that they had a bright future but Elena interrupted her before she could finish.
"I better run along now. The Alpha is on the way." Elena said and Rhea nodded in understanding.
"Be careful." Rhea said to her and Elena walked off.
By the time Elena got into the Alpha's bedroom, she was panting heavily. Every step she took was sending jolts of pain to her head. Her throat was dry and she was struggling to keep her eyes opened.
"I can pull through. I just have to endure for a bit longer..." She murmured, swallowing hard. Then, she knelt down and began to prepare the tea.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elena groaned as her eyes opened slowly.
"Argh, my head hurts so much..." She muttered, and she could feel the bitterness of sickness on her tongue.
"Wait, what happened?" She wondered aloud as she realized she was lying on the floor in the Alpha's bedroom. Out of panic of getting caught for getting relaxed in the master's bedroom, she quickly stood up even though her tired body protested.
"Did I fall asleep while making the tea?" She wondered, her eyebrows furrowing in confusion. All she could remember was making the tea as she prepared for the arrival of the Alpha.
As she thought of how she ended up on the floor, her eyes wandered to the huge bed in the room and that was when she realized she wasn't alone.
"Forgive me, Alpha..." She had started apologizing when she caught sight of the Alpha on the bed but stopped abruptly as her eyes caught something else.
Blood. It was on Alpha's slightly ajar mouth and nose. And he was lying motionlessly.
"Oh, dear moon goddess, what is this?" Elena screamed but quickly used her palms to cover her mouth. After a moment, she removed her palms from her mouth and used them to wipe her face as if to wipe away the terrible scene before her.
But it was still there.
"What happened to the Alpha?" She mumbled, her whole body trembling in fear.
Slowly, she approached the bed to see better, to confirm she was actually seeing clearly.
"No, no, no..." She sobbed as she realized what she was seeing was real. Then, with shaky hands, she checked for the pulse of the Alpha.
"What ... the ... The Alpha is dead?" Elena's eyes widened in shock at the realization.
