Naya's POV
"Did you hear? Alpha Liam Bloodton is dead!"
"Jeez, what happened to him?"
The mournful air hangs around school this morning. Gladly, the students have something else to talk about, not hate on me today.
The death of the Alpha has caused such an uproar that school has been discontinued for today, and everyone has to go home.
I walk to my locker and retrieve my books. Walking past the clusters of students, none of them even glance at me. Don't get me wrong, it's not like I am not bothered about the death of our Alpha, but honestly, it's the least of my problems.
My name is Naya Woods, and I'm the most hated girl in this high school. I'm a werewolf, like everyone else, but I never got my wolf. My sixteenth birthday was devastating because my transformation never came. When my mother noticed that I wasn't changing, she took all the money under her bed and carried me to a seer in the dangerous woods. Nothing came out of it, sadly.
My mother always prayed that I shouldn't suffer the same fate as her, but unfortunately...
My mother's story is different. She was a fierce werewolf, but one day it was like her wolf died. She never heard her or spoke to her again.
Since my mother and I didn't have wolves, we were the least members of our city pack. We were denied rights and protection that other werewolves received, but Mum has been strong. We have been pushing through. So I make up for my ability by being the best student in the entire school. I have never gotten less than an A in a test, but that has done very little for me. Everyone always looks at me and my mother like we have shit on us, they avoid us.
So, pardon me, if I don't care too much that the Alpha (whom my mother wrote to many times to help us) has died and I don't show sympathy...
I slam the door of my locker shut to see Sherry, my best friend, making a face at me.
"Oh my God!" I flinch. "Sherry, come on!"
"Naya, it was a joke!" She laughs.
She holds my hand and we start to walk down the hall, between the students. Sherry is beautiful, the boys love Naya. I have no idea why she is even friends with me. Her father is rich and she already got her wolf, she has no reason to be my friend.
"Did you hear, Alpha Liam Bloodton is dead?" She says.
"Yeah, that kind of sucks for him," I say without emotion.
"Why are you not as excited as everyone else?" She turns to me.
"I don't know, maybe because I barely slept last night." I sigh.
She stands in front of me, with her hands folded.
"You don't get it, do you? Everyone is not talking because the Alpha is dead. They are talking because his son just came to the city!"
I roll my eyes at her. If I don't care about the Alpha, why should I care about his son?
She raises her hands in confusion, "I don't understand you, sometimes. The girls are excited because there is going to be a meeting later today, everyone is invited."
Yeah, everyone. Except my mother and I.
"You know I can't go, Sherry." I sigh. " I don't have a pass, and besides. I am not interested in seeing this new Alpha."
"Come on, you know I'm not too, but the girls said that the dude is smoking hot and I want to see that first hand!" She squeaks with excitement. "But, I can't go, my sister is ill."
"Oh, Sherry..." I slap my face. I know what's coming.
"You have to go, okay? Just make sure that you see him and then we can discuss how fine he is." She smiles.
Before I can say anything, Sherry has taken out her pass from her bag and presses it into my hand. I know, my best friend is not a slut, she just likes to assess guys and their looks.
I know that she has zero interest in the Alpha's son because she has a massive crush on another Alpha's son, Zayn. She swears that she is going to marry him.
"Please, do this for me, okay?" She pulls my cheek.
"Sherry..." I drag an inhale.
"Thanks! I love you!" She kisses my cheek as she giggles.
I snort with laughter, Sherry is such a sweet girl.
I look at the door and everyone stops talking. I swallow a gulp as I see my mother standing at the entrance of the school. She is in her cleaners' overall, it's orange, and her hair is tied up in a messy bun.
"Hello, Miss Woods!" Sherry waves at her.
"Hey, sweetheart." She waves at Sherry. "Naya, we've got to go, now."
"Bye, Sherry," I say under my breath.
I half run out of the hall, pretending that I don't hear the taunting laugh of my Schoolmates.
"Look at her hurrying to help mummy dive into the garbage!"
I push the door open and rush into my mum's old car.
I push my hair away from my face as I try to steady my breathing. It's a nightmare, every day. My mother hops into the car and starts to engine.
"Why were you running like a thief?" She frowns, looking at me through the mirror.
"Nothing, mum. Let's go." I point ahead.
She knows why I was running, she bites down her lips as she drives the car.
"I just got a contract a few hours ago. You are going to help me clean the Bloodton mansion before the meeting." She tells me. "You heard the man died, right?"
"Yes, mum." I prop my chin against my hand.
I would have preferred to stay at home and read my books, but my mum needs my help at her job. It's either that, or we don't get dinner for a few days to come.
*****
The Bloodton stone mansion is the biggest private property in the city, it has over a hundred rooms in it.
My mother insisted that she won't be outsourcing to other cleaners because she knows that this money will go a long way for us. So I've cleaned till my hands are aching and my eyes have grown weak. We will have to come for two more days before we are done with the cleaning. I'm tired, but I keep on cleaning because I see how happy my mother is about the money we are going to get.
The sky has fallen and the meeting has started, I can tell by the number of cars I see from the windows.
We have cleaned the part of the house where the meeting is happening, we are the only ones on this side of the house. Now that we are done with the day's work, my mother packs the tools into the boxes.
"Go on to the car." She glances at me. "Don't worry about the things, I will bring them. Your classmates are here, I don't want anyone to see you with cleaning tools."
I see the pain in her eyes, she knows that I hate doing this. But it's kind of sweet that she is looking out for me. I turn around and walk down the long stairs. I'm going to wait for my mother in the car.
As I walk, I mistakenly bump into a really turn man. He turns to look at me, a frown of displeasure on his face.
My God, he is so good looking. I gulp down air as his cold eyes pierces me.
"Watch where you are going." He tells me as he walks away.
"Sorry." I mumble.
I don't know who he is, but he is so rude. And hot too....
As I pass through the hall that divides the house into two different parts, I see the sign outside and the man in a suit by the door. That's where the meeting is taking place, but yeah, me and my mother are not allowed in there.
I stop with fright, I see two of my classmates walking in, but they stop. They have seen me too. They smirk as they whisper to each other. They laugh wickedly as they walk in majestically. My throat aches with the pain, I hate getting treated like this.
Something rises in me as I start to feel my back pocket, the pass that Sherry gave me is still with me. I walk towards the door, my gait is confident, but my heart is beating fast.
"Good evening, I'm here for the meeting." I hand the pass to the guard.
The man looks at where I have come from and frowns. "What were you doing there?"
"Finding the bathroom, I have a weak bladder." I shrug. "They are the worst, right?"
He looks at the pass, trying to see how authentic it is. Finally, he hands it back. "May the spirit of our Alpha rest in peace."
"Amen." I take back the pass. I look over my shoulder before I walk into the meeting. I will be out before my mother even notices.
