Julie London's Cry Me a River is playing loudly in the kitchen, so Sonny didn't hear the kitchen door unlock. The door flings open and Sonny put down his newspaper to see why Diana is going out. He doesn't see the figure behind, only the figure pointing the revolver at him. He ducks swiftly under the dining table as the first shot flies across. He thinks to himself, where is the nearest gun? The sharp cry of Diana breaks his line of thought and he hears a loud thud. The man is on the floor and Diana is covered in blood, on top of the intruder. "It's done." She says, and drops the bloodied knife on the floor. For a moment he is lost, how did he enter? he knows that door is never opened, he doesn't even know where the key is. He picks up the gun and points it at her. "The key." He says, ignoring the fact that Diana's eyes are pleading, but he sees it. Guilt. "This was the only way Sonny. You wouldn't have believed if I told you." Sonny screamed. "Tell me what?" Sonny doesn't know what to think when on a debt collection the business owner offered him his daughter as payment for months of debt. It was either the money or his life but when he saw his daughter, he figured it wasn't such a bad idea. And so she was his, and lived in his house. As the story unfolds, the two navigate their unlikely relationship until they can no longer ignore each other, as well as ambition within the crime family and rift with the other families. What follows is a discovery of love, near death experiences, a test of loyalty, greed, ambition and betrayal. Will they find a way to coexist? Will Sonny's decide between ambition or loyalty? Will both make it out alive? Read on and embark on a nail-biting journey.
"Please, I beg you, please. I don't have the money yet. Please don't kill me."
Old Mr. Salazar pleaded desperately, groaning after one of the mobsters with Sonny Giuseppe shoved him in the stomach. Sonny was leaning on the edge of a worktable in the workshop and lit a cigarette. He sighed after a long drag and crouched beside Mr. Salazar.
"You know, we've given you time. We don't have much of that now." Sonny started, exhaling the smoke on a petrified Mr. Salazar.
"I'm sorry. I just couldn't get all the money."
"Well, that's a shame." Sonny rose and withdrew his revolver. "I'm sorry too."
"Wait please! Don't kill me... Let my daughter be the debt paid. I offer her to you."
Sonny laughed and the mobsters with him joined in a hearty laughter.
"You're a desperate old man."
For the first time, Mr. Salazar looked confident. "You'll see."
He turned and shouted out, "Diana!"
She went into the room, headed down and the room quietened down.
"Here she was, Mr. Sonny. Look! Clean and respectful. She will do anything you say."
Sonny threw his cigarette to the ground and stamped on it slowly. He walked over to Diana and, with his revolver, raised her head. Her blue eyes defiantly stared into his and for a moment Sonny was breathless, almost weak at the knees, but quickly he composed himself.
He hadn't seen anything like her before.
"Well, old man. Seems today was your lucky day." He glanced at Ricky 'Cig' Saldado, his right-hand man, who shrugged: he saw nothing wrong.
"Why not, eh? She's damn pretty." Sonny said loudly and they all cheered. Even Mr. Salazar was delighted. Sonny instructed one of his boys to put her in his car and straightening his Fedora, he led them out of the workshop.
The next morning, Sonny was restless and was replaying the events of the day. He was supposed to have collected an enormous debt owed by one of the multiple shops they protected or offered protection to, but he had the prettiest blonde he had seen sitting in his guest room. He couldn't get her out of his head, wanting to see those eyes again. He sprang up and was surprised to see her standing in the living room, head bowed.
"What are you doing?" Sonny's voice was hoarse.
"I am made to believe my father sold me to you to pay his debt, and my sole purpose was to repay that debt." Diana said without raising her head. He walked slowly to her and knew he wanted to hear her speak again.
"So, how do you think you'll be repaying that debt?"
"With my life, with whatever you want." Sonny smiled and walked around her. She tried very hard to sound firm, but still she sounded soft, and it had its way it appealed to Sonny. Perhaps it was because she was small and at his mercy that it appealed to him. She still had her head bent.
"You should look me in the eye," He grabbed a handful of her luscious blonde hair and jerked her head up. "When I'm talking to you." She shuddered and he stared into her eyes. The defiance in her eyes remained and Sonny wondered how beautiful her eyes would be if they were... less aggressive. But it was just her eyes that had that aggressiveness about her. He looked down at her petite body slowly, thinking about how easy it'd be to pin her down.
"I'll figure out what to do with you, for now, make sure everywhere was clean, no dust." He let go of her hair and turned to leave.
"Yes sir." She said emotionlessly and he turned back to stare at her for a moment, smiled and then returned to his room. He had a few hours before his crew would come around and intended to use the free time catching some more sleep, until it was interrupted abruptly.
"Sonny! Sonny! Come out here now! Sonny!"
He got up and wanted to reach for his bedside revolver, but he computed that he knew who was yelling.
"It was a little too early to muck around, don't you think?" Sonny said when he got to the living room. He sat by the kitchen bar and lit a cigarette. "And good morning to you, Joanna."
"Who the f*ck was this Sonny?" Joanna was red all over, exhaling from her screaming exercise.
"That was Diana." He felt the nicotine relax him, and he dabbed the ash off the cigarette. "Her father owes me a huge debt, and so she's repaying that debt."
"You liar! She's your mistress, isn't she? Is this why you don't want to get married, so you could continue to cheat without me knowing? That's why you don't want me to move in with you, isn't it?"
Sonny laughed and sighed deeply.
It didn't take long for Diana to figure out Joanna was Sonny's girlfriend from their conversation. Joanna did not listen to her when she tried explaining, instead screaming out her lungs till Sonny came out. The accusations of cheating were absurd and Diana felt, for Joanna, guilty even.
"I'm sorry, but it was true, I'm here to pay my father's debt." Diana said curtly, head bowed. Joanna looked at her in disgust.
"Shut up, you dirty slut." Before she completed the statement, Sonny was upon her swiftly and slapped her hard.
"You will not disrespect my property. You could get out, if you're not alright with it." He said softly, as if to explain why he slapped her. Joanna looked at Diana with teary eyes and at Sonny, her palm still on her reddening cheek.
"I'm... I'm sorry. I'm sorry." Joanna muttered and, after an awkward second, she moved past both of them and went into Sonny's bedroom.
At night, while lying on her bed, she heard Joanna screaming, and she was confused as to the reasons for Joanna's pain, or pleasure. She did not understand the reason for screaming.
She didn't expect to see Sonny in the morning that early as she cleaned, but there he was, shirtless and roaming the living room. It surprised her, his chiseled chest and abdominal muscles, and she took every bit of him in and hoped he didn't turn back to catch her staring from the corner of the dining room clutching a broom, and then he turned to see her in the corner.
"Oh Diana, morning. Clean up and prepare lunch, the boys are coming over."
"Okay sir." Diana found her voice and bowed her head. She continued sweeping, and then she heard footsteps approaching her. She knew it was Sonny, but she wanted to keep her head down and sweep till she saw Sonny's feet. He came close to her and she held her breath.
"Let's look at you today." Sonny said and grabbed her from behind him, making her gasp. He presses her against himself and Diana tries to free herself from his grip. He turned her around and peered into her eyes, and she could feel his breath on her face. The defiance shone brightly in her eyes, but she couldn't wriggle free and when she gave up and relaxed, he smiled.
"I should make you useful. I couldn't believe my luck really. I own you!" Sonny said and laughed, his laughter a hearty booming sound in the dining area.
"Yes, you do sir." Diana sneered at him and he chuckled. Finally, he let go of her and she stepped back away from him. Turning away, he began.
"You seemed so helpless in your father's workshop. And you know what's funny? You didn't fight it."
"I didn't have a choice."
"Yes, you did. You could have said no."
"Do I have a choice now?"
Sonny laughed heartily again. "What do you think, genius?"
Diana continued sweeping and thinking about the concept of choice.
"I didn't want to kill your father, but that kind of disrespect would be bad for business," Sonny said. "Cos if I was going to kill him, I would have had to put a bullet in your pretty skull, but you looked too sweet."
Diana paused for a moment and continued sweeping.
"Why didn't you kill me?" Diana asked when she found her voice.
"Because like I said, you looked sweet and cute." Sonny replied, leaning on the fall and folding his arms to face her.
"Why would you have needed to kill me? I don't owe you." Diana raised her head. She needed to see the expression on her face as he answered.
"That's because I killed the person that killed my father."
