Chapter 1 Part 1

Amira, a 17-year-old girl, had to suffer bad treatment from her stepfather. The death of her mother made her life a mess; Amira thought her stepfather would take good care of her and her sister. But in fact, everything was not as Amira had expected.

Amira had to be willing to not continue her studies after graduating. Her family's economy could be better, especially Amira, who also has to take care of her younger sister, Yeni. Little girls who are still in elementary school certainly need attention and school fees, too. In the end, Amira worked in a food shop not far from her house. He did all this because his stepfather never supported him and didn't seem to care.

Pak Wanto, who likes to drink and gamble, is also stubborn. His attitude changed after his wife died. He often scolded Amira and her sister, two children who were supposed to be loved but who were not needed well in the house.

That night, at around 19:00, Amira had just come home from work. She was shocked when she entered her house to find her father drinking alcoholic beverages. On the table, there were several bottles of liquor. Suddenly, Amira was shocked. She slowly stepped forward to approach her sister in the room.

But suddenly, her father called, "Amira!"

Amira quickly stopped in her tracks; she turned to her stepfather with a tense face.

"Why are you coming home at this hour?" Mr. Wanto asked in a harsh tone.

"Sorry, sir. The shop where I work was closing late because there were lots of people shopping," answered Amira nervously.

"Just make excuses! Come here, massage my body!!" he snapped.

Amira could only take a deep breath. She was actually very tired because she had just come home from work, but I was afraid. Her stepfather was acting rudely, so in the end, Amira walked over to him and sat next to her stepfather, who looked drunk.

The smell of alcohol was so strong that it made Amira feel uncomfortable around her stepfather. But what can I do? Amira can't do much other than obey what he says. Otherwise, he will be rude.

"Quickly massage your father's shoulders!" Mr. Wanto ordered again.

"Yes sir."

Without saying much else, Amira just obeyed; she asked her stepfather for his shoulder. Amira felt uncomfortable with the smell of alcohol in the room, especially since her stepfather kept drinking the liquor. Even though he was drunk, he still wanted to finish all the drinks on the table.

Amira could only remain silent with teary eyes; how could she not? His stepfather was very kind and very caring, but after his wife died, his character changed to someone who was easily angry. It didn't stop there; her stepfather was always drunk and wanted to gamble, so Amira sometimes couldn't save the money she earned from work because her stepfather always asked for money to use for gambling. If he doesn't give it to him, he will go berserk and won't hesitate to hurt Amira and her sister.

"Tight massage!" he snapped, which immediately made Amira gasp in surprise.

"Yes, sir," answered Amira, shaking because she was so afraid.

Her stepfather's harsh treatment and changing attitude made Amira want to leave the house and return to her family outside the city. But that is very difficult to do because every time Amira gets a salary, she cannot collect the money because it is for her family's needs. Not to mention her father, who always asks for her money to gamble and buy liquor, so Amira can only hope that there is someone who could help him get out of that room and return home to his family far away.

Amira wanted to run away with her sister but failed because her stepfather caught her, and that incident also made her stepfather act even more violently and often hit her. So, like it or not, Amira had to stay in the house even though she couldn't stand the suffering she felt every day.

"Sir... Can you stop drinking that again? I feel sorry for Yeni, Sir." Amira tries to make her stepfather aware.

However, Amira's words actually made her stepfather angry.

"Hah. What do you know? Hah! You're still small and talk a lot!"

Amira was shocked when her stepfather shouted like that; in the end, she chose to remain silent with teary eyes. His insides felt crushed to find that his stepfather's treatment was really no longer like it used to be. The father figure that Amira thought would be able to replace her father, who had died, but instead misbehaved and was not the same as before when her mother was still alive.

"Eh, where's your money," asked Mr. Wanto in a nasal tone.

"Sir, I haven't gotten paid yet." Amira looks nervous and scared.

"Do I really not know what date you get paid?! Don't lie! Where's your money!" he snapped again. His voice grew louder.

Amira was shaking because it was confirmed that she had not received a salary from her work because the shop owner's boss was out of town.

"I swear, sir... I haven't been paid yet, my boss is still out of town, whether tomorrow or what day he comes home I don't know, sir," said Amira, who couldn't hold back her tears.

Instead of being silent when Amira said that, Mr. Wanto became even more angry. He got angry and slapped his stepson.

Suddenly, Amira could only cry because of her stepfather's harsh treatment. While holding her cheek, Amira tried to stay away from her father because she was afraid he would continue to hit her.

"Where's your money, hurry up!" Mr. Wanto snapped. His eyes were sharp.

"Sir... I swear I haven't been paid yet, there's also food costs, sir," said Amira between tears.

"What are you eating? Come here quickly, take it!"

Because her father was increasingly shouting and looking very angry, Amira also felt terrible about her neighbors, so finally, she stepped forward and rushed into the room. While crying, she opened the cupboard to take out the money she had saved for daily shopping, and there was only a little left.

Amira needs to learn how to find money for food tomorrow. He glances at his sister, who is asleep on the bed. Amira's heart really hurts.

"Amira!"

The sound of the scream startled her, so Amira finally rushed out to her stepfather with a piece of money. Without another word, Mr. Wanto immediately grabbed the cash from his stepson's hand.

"Just this much?"

"Yes, sir. There's nothing else," answered Amira while crying.

"You must be lying. Take it again!"

"There aren't any, sir. I swear there aren't any anymore." Amira tries to convince her stepfather.

Seeing Amira crying like that, Mr. Wanto finally stepped forward with a sour face and a bit of unsteadiness. Meanwhile, Amira could only stare at him while continuing to cry at her stepfather's behavior.

"Just watch out if tomorrow you can't give me money!"

Mr. Wanto suddenly threatened, his eyes looking sharp at Amira.
