Chapter 1 Reunion

---

**Chapter 1: Reunion**

The bell above the café door tinkled softly as Emily stepped inside, greeted by the comforting scent of freshly ground coffee beans and the soft murmur of conversation. She scanned the room, her heart fluttering with anticipation, searching for a familiar face amidst the sea of strangers.

And then she saw him.

James sat at a corner table by the window, bathed in the warm glow of the afternoon sunlight. He was engrossed in a newspaper, his brow furrowed in concentration, his lips moving silently as he read. He looked just as she remembered him, with his dark hair tousled and a faint stubble lining his jaw.

Emily's breath caught in her throat as she approached him, her pulse quickening with each step. She felt a rush of emotions flood through her—excitement, nervousness, and a twinge of something she couldn't quite identify.

"James?" she called out softly as she reached his table, her voice barely above a whisper.

James looked up, his eyes widening in surprise. For a moment, there was a flicker of confusion in his gaze, as though he couldn't quite believe what he was seeing. Then, recognition dawned, and a smile spread across his face, lighting up his features.

"Emily?" he exclaimed, rising from his seat with a mixture of disbelief and delight.

Before Emily could react, James had crossed the distance between them and enveloped her in a warm embrace. She closed her eyes, relishing the familiar scent of his cologne and the comforting feel of his arms around her. It was as though no time had passed at all, as though they were back in high school, sharing secrets and dreams like they used to.

As they pulled away from each other, Emily couldn't help but notice the way James was studying her, as though trying to memorize every line and curve of her face. She felt a blush rise to her cheeks under his gaze, suddenly self-conscious in a way she hadn't been in years.

"It's been too long," James said, his voice soft with emotion.

Emily nodded, unable to tear her gaze away from him. "Too long," she agreed, her voice barely a whisper.

They settled into their seats, the awkwardness of their reunion melting away as they fell into easy conversation. They talked about everything and nothing—catching up on each other's lives, reminiscing about their shared childhood, and laughing at the silly memories they had once thought were so important.

But beneath the surface, there was an undercurrent of tension—a question left unasked, a feeling left unsaid. Emily could sense it lingering between them, like a shadow cast by the afternoon sun.

For now, though, she pushed those thoughts aside, content to bask in the warmth of their reunion. As they parted ways later that day, promising to meet again soon, Emily couldn't help but wonder what the future held in store for them.
