The Misconception is a short story revolving around a young lady, who just came back from the U.S only to find out that her dad is dead. She was told by her mother that he committed suicide. Is that true? Sit back and watch as the truth unfolds.
It was a sunny day.
So, I decided to go for drinks, in order to clear my head and come up with an actual plan of how I was going to get back on my feet for real.
My destination was low-key, a quiet hotel in Ikoyi.
I didn't want to run into any of his friends or business partners.
I was not yet ready to explain what had happened, or why I went off for a while.
As I sat by the pool side and ordered a Cocktail, I noticed a young man directly opposite me staring at me.
The longer he stared, the more uncomfortable I became.
Suddenly, I noticed him walking up to me, I quickly pretended to be on the phone.
"Are you not Doyin Duncan?"
He said.
"Please leave me alone. I don't feel like talking, and I want to be alone."
"This conversation, would be worth your time, I promise. My name is Dan can I sit?"
I rolled my eyes. Obviously, this one wasn't going to give up so easily.
"All right Mr Dan, what do you want from me."
"First, I'm so sorry for your loss. Mr Duncan, was a man of integrity and a marking guide for us all. Please accept my condolences. Mr Duncan was an incredible Boss; full of love and kindness. He showed us the true meaning of diligence and discipline."
I cleared my throat.
"Thank you."
Tears rolling down my cheek.
"Why did he do such a thing?"
He was a bit unusual and I had never met anyone like him.
He looked straight in my eyes and told me.
"There's a lot you need to know about the death of your father."
"I - I don't understand. My father stabbed himself! What is there to know again!"
"Calm down, okay, that's what you were made to believe. That's what we all have been made to believe. That your father committed suicide."
He said.
Placing his hands on my shoulders.
I shrugged.
"My mum was there! She told me she tried to stop him, but he pushed her!
"You also believed that? Hmm. I've been working for Mr Duncan, for twenty-five years, and I can boldly say, I know him more than anyone. He tells me everything ; his deepest secrets, his weaknesses and strengths, and I know that he would never do such a thing, even if he was compelled to."
I was shocked, but I hid it well.
"What are you trying to say?"
I sniffled.
He continued.
"About a month ago, before his demise, he told me something rather shocking."
I sat up.
My eyes were puffy and wet.
"Tell me what you know."
