Elara Voss has always been told her blood is cursed. On the night she is meant to be claimed, Alpha Kael Blackthorn rejects her in front of the entire pack. He forces her to her knees and declares that her corrupt bloodline would poison their future for generations. No one defends her. No one speaks. Except a rogue named Rowan Hale. He pulls her from the dirt and takes her into the mountains, the only place left for the discarded. There, Elara discovers something terrifying: when she is wounded, her flesh closes before her eyes. The "curse" everyone feared is not a curse at all. It is something far more dangerous. Hunted by ancient families who sense the truth, Elara and Rowan are forced into a brutal life on the run. When Rowan is mortally wounded protecting her, desperation drives Elara to pour her blood into his mouth. She thinks she has failed-until the moment she breaks, crying over his still body. Golden light erupts beneath her skin. Twenty percent of a long-lost legendary bloodline awakens. Rowan lives. And he is permanently changed by her. As more of her power unlocks through blood and near-death, Elara learns the truth: she carries the purest royal bloodline, vanished for centuries. The same blood that can force any wolf into submission. The same blood that makes her the rightful Queen. Those who once called her filthy now want her dead before she fully awakens. But Elara no longer runs. She returns to the pack that rejected her wearing a crown of black and gold, Rowan at her side. With a single command of her blood she brings every wolf-including Kael-to their knees. Then she does what no one expected. She severs the mate bond completely. And she chooses the man who never once looked at her like she was a stain.

THE REJECTED MATE BECOMES THE QUEEN Chapter 1 01

The full moon hung heavy over the Blackthorn ceremonial grounds, turning every face silver and cold.

Elara stood in the center of the circle wearing the plain white dress the pack elders had given her. It was too thin for the late autumn night. The wind cut through the fabric and raised goosebumps along her arms, but she kept her hands still at her sides. She had practiced stillness her whole life. It was the only thing that kept people from noticing her.

Hundreds of wolves watched in silence. Some looked curious. Most looked bored. A few already wore the small, mean smiles of people who had been waiting for this moment.

Alpha Kael Blackthorn stood three steps above her on the stone platform. He wore black from throat to boots. The moon caught the sharp line of his jaw and the colder blue of his eyes. He had not looked at her once since she was brought forward.

The bond between them pulsed under her skin like a second heartbeat. It had started the week she turned twenty, quiet at first, then stronger every day. She had spent nights lying awake wondering what it would feel like when he finally claimed her. She had imagined kindness. She had imagined relief.

She had never imagined this.

Kael's voice carried easily across the grounds.

"I, Kael Blackthorn, Alpha of this pack, reject Elara Voss as my mate."

The words landed like a slap. The bond in her chest twisted so hard she almost bent forward. She locked her knees and stayed upright.

A low murmur moved through the crowd. Someone laughed under their breath.

Kael continued as if he were reading a report.

"Her bloodline is corrupt. It has been known for generations. Mating her would weaken every pup born after this night. I will not allow that stain into my pack."

Elara's throat closed. She had heard the whispers her whole life-cursed blood, weak line, something wrong in the family-but no one had ever said it so clearly, so publicly, with the entire pack listening.

Kael's gaze finally dropped to her.

"Kneel."

The command hit the bond like a physical force. Her body wanted to obey. She felt her knees start to unlock.

She forced them to lock again.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"I said kneel."

This time the pressure was harder. Elara's legs shook. Around her, wolves shifted, some looking away, some watching with open interest. No one spoke.

She sank down. The cold stone bit into her knees through the thin dress. She kept her back straight and her eyes fixed on the ground three feet in front of her. She would not give them her face.

Kael's voice continued above her.

"From this night, Elara Voss holds no place in this pack. She will leave the territory before dawn. Anyone who offers her aid will answer to me."

The bond tore. Not cleanly. It ripped in slow, burning pieces. Elara's breath left her in a thin sound she could not stop. Tears blurred the stone under her, but she did not lift a hand to wipe them.

Someone in the crowd said, loud enough to carry, "Finally."

Another voice answered, "Took him long enough."

A third laughed.

Elara stayed on her knees. The cold seeped into her bones. She counted her breaths the way she always did when things became too much. In. Out. In. Out.

Boots stopped in front of her.

She did not look up.

A different voice spoke. Lower. Rougher. Not Kael's.

"That's enough."

The laughter died.

Elara raised her head slowly.

A man she did not know stood between her and the platform. Tall. Broad. Dark hair cut short. A thin scar cutting through his left eyebrow. He wore no pack colors. His clothes were plain and travel-worn. A rogue.

Kael's voice turned sharp.

"This is not your concern, Hale."

The man-Hale-did not look at the Alpha. He looked down at Elara.

"Can you stand?"

She nodded once. Her legs felt distant, but they held when she pushed herself up. The white dress was dirty at the knees. She did not brush it off.

Hale turned his body slightly, angling himself between her and the platform.

"She's leaving," he said. "Now."

Kael stepped down one level. The air around him tightened with dominance.

"You forget yourself."

Hale's reply was flat.

"I forget nothing. You rejected her. Pack law says she's free to go. I'm taking her past the border so none of your wolves decide to finish what you started."

A ripple of tension moved through the watching crowd. No one stepped forward. No one spoke for her. They only watched.

Kael stared at the rogue for a long moment. Something ugly flickered behind his eyes-anger, yes, but also the first thin crack of something else. The broken bond was still bleeding on both ends.

He looked past Hale to Elara.

"Do not come back."

Elara met his eyes for the first time since the rejection began. Her voice came out quieter than she expected, but steady.

"I won't."

Hale's hand settled lightly at the middle of her back. Not pushing. Just steady. He guided her through the circle of wolves. They parted without a word. Some looked away. A few watched her with open satisfaction. One young female smiled the way people smile when a story ends the way they hoped.

Elara kept her eyes forward. The bond in her chest was a raw, open wound. Every step pulled at it. She did not look back.

They walked past the last of the pack houses and into the tree line. The noise of the ceremonial grounds faded behind them. Only the wind and the distant howl of a wolf who was not howling for her remained.

Hale did not speak until the lights of the pack were gone and the forest closed around them.

"There's an old hunting cabin two hours north," he said. "We can stop there until morning. After that we keep moving."

Elara nodded. Her throat still felt too tight for words.

He glanced at her once, then faced forward again.

"I'm Rowan," he said. "In case you wanted a name."

"Elara."

"I know."

They walked in silence after that. The moon followed them through the branches. Elara's knees ached. The torn edges of the bond throbbed with every heartbeat. She kept counting her breaths.

In.

Out.

She did not know that by the time the sun rose, her blood would begin telling a different story than the one she had been forced to believe her entire life.

She only knew that the man walking beside her had been the first person in years to stand between her and the ground.

And that, for tonight, was enough to keep her moving.

Just before the cabin came into view, Elara stumbled on a root. She put out a hand to catch herself against a tree. The bark scraped her palm open. Blood welled dark against her skin.

She stared at the cut.

As she watched, the edges of the wound began to close.
