Chapter 1 Episode 1

TAMERA'S POV

"Thief."

That word hit harder than the slap.

My cheek stung, burning hot from the force of it. I stood there, hand pressed to my face, trying to figure out what the hell just happened. My mind was still catching up. Was this real life? Or did I somehow get dropped into an overly dramatic telenovela? Because no way was I standing in my in-laws' over decorated living room, being accused like some common criminal.

But nope. This wasn't a dream. It was painfully real. And unfortunately for me, the nightmare was just getting started.

"I knew from the start you were nothing but a gold-digging little tramp," Delores snapped. Delores, my husband's mom, aka the queen of dramatic entrances and soul-crushing insults, stood with her arms crossed like she was ready for round two. "You were never good enough for my son. And now this? Stealing from us? You're pathetic."

I blinked. Stealing? I didn't steal it!

"I didn't do it! " I managed to say, my voice coming out weaker than I liked. "I didn't steal anything! Why would I? I have done everything for this family. I've been loyal since day one."

There. That was brave, right? Except... wrong move.

Before I could even brace myself, another slap cracked across my other cheek. And this time, it wasn't from her.

It was from him.

Max.

My husband. My supposed partner. The man I stupidly thought would always have my back.

My breath caught in my throat as I stared at him, completely frozen.

No. This wasn't happening. This couldn't be happening.

"Max..." I whispered, the name barely making it past my lips. My chest was tight, like my heart was trying to claw its way out.

He looked at me like I was nothing. Not the woman he married. Not the woman who stood by him when he was grinding to build his empire. Just nothing.

"You have some nerve," he spat. "Standing there, acting all innocent. After everything I gave you. And now you steal from me? From my family?" His eyes were pure hatred.

I could barely breathe. My ears were ringing.

"I didn't fucking do it!" I choked out, my voice cracking. "It's a damn bracelet, Max. Why the hell would I steal that?"

My throat burned, and my eyes were stinging, but I refused to cry again. Not in front of them. Not like this.

A husband is supposed to have your back, right? Especially when the whole world's turning against you? But apparently, that's just too much to expect from Max.

He didn't even move. He stood across from me like a stranger, arms folded, face cold, jaw locked tight like he couldn't stand the sight of me. His brown eyes used to be warm, soft... home. Now? They were empty. Like all the love was just gone.

This wasn't the man I married.

And of course, Delores had to step in. Because what's a family disaster without the mother-in-law stirring the pot like it's her full-time job?

"Oh, give it a rest with the dramatics," she said, walking toward me like she owned the damn floor. "Do you really think we don't see through this little act? You have been sucking the life out of this family since day one. Trapping Max, clinging to his money, his name, now this? Stealing? How low can you go?"

I blinked at her, biting the inside of my cheek to stop myself from screaming.

"You really hate me that much, huh?" I said, meeting her eyes head-on. "I have never stolen anything in my life, but it doesn't matter, does it? You made up your mind about me the second Max brought me home."

She narrowed her eyes, clearly not used to me talking back. Her expression twisted into something worse, something almost satisfied, like she was winning.

But I didn't care anymore.

I turned to Max. Because despite everything, a piece of me was still stupid enough to hope.

"Max," I said softly, stepping toward him. "You know me. You know I'd never-"

"Shut up, Tamara."

My heart actually stopped for a second.

This weekend was supposed to be normal. Just a stupid little getaway with the in-laws. I didn't even want to come. Delores was always a nightmare, but I never expected to be framed.

They said the family heirloom, some ancient gold bracelet worth a small fortune went missing. Then boom. Magically, it shows up in my bag.

How convenient.

It was like walking into a trap I didn't know I was in until it was already too late.

"Are you seriously choosing not to trust me?" I whispered, stepping toward him, desperate to reach the part of him that still loved me, if it even existed anymore. "I didn't take the jewelry. I don't know how this happened, but I swear, I didn't do it."

His expression didn't change. If anything, it hardened.

"You can't fool me you know? The Tamara I married is different from what you are now. I know you did it," he muttered, looking down at me with disgust. "I can't believe I ever trusted you."

Oh that hurt, no hurt is an understatement. It tore me to fucking shreds! I have tried so hard, to make sure his family never got between us, that they never make him hate me

But it happened already

No going back it seems.

"Max..." My voice broke, and I hated myself for it. "How can you believe this? I love you. I've only ever loved you."

"You love yourself," Anya, his sister, sneered from the side of the room. "That's the only person you've ever cared about, isn't it? All this time, you've been manipulating us, taking advantage of Max's kindness and our family's generosity. And now, stealing jewelry? And not just any jewelry, the very expensive family heirloom. How disgusting? Do you have no shame at all? Is there any depth you won't sink to? You're nothing but a parasite, feeding off of others and ruining everything you touch."

"I didn't take anything!" I cried out. Damn I was frustrated. I was too frustrated. "I don't even know how it got in my things. This is one of you doing, you guys are trying to frame me"

Delores stepped forward again, her face inches from mine.

"Get out," she hissed, her breath hot on my skin. "You don't deserve to be here. You don't deserve Max."

The lump in my throat grew until I could barely breathe. I looked at Max, pleading with my eyes, silently begging him to stop this. To come to my defense. But he stood there, still, unmoving, as if he was watching a stranger. And then he said the words that broke me completely.

"I'm calling the police."

I gasped. In a second, the room spun around me. The words hit me so hard that I stumbled a little.

"What?" I whispered, looking at him in disbelief. "No, Max, you can't."

"They will take care of this," he said coldly, reaching for his phone. "We'll let them deal with your lies."

"Max, please," I whispered, tears streaming down my face now. "Please, don't do this."

But he ignored me. He dialed the number with a chilling calmness that made my stomach turn. The room felt like it was closing in on me now, suffocating me.

The police arrived, and everything happened so fast. I barely had time to speak, to explain myself, before they were handcuffing me and leading me out the door. I glanced back one last time, hoping, praying, that Max would stop them. That he'd realize this was a mistake. But he just watched, his face stone-cold as they took me away.

The cell was cold. Dark.

The air smelled of sweat and fear. I had been there for what felt like forever, but in reality, it had only been a day. A day since the man I loved, the man I would have done anything for, turned his back on me. Accused me of something I didn't do.

I hadn't slept. I couldn't. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw his face, heard his voice telling me I was pathetic. That he didn't believe me. That I was nothing to him.

The door to the cell opened, and a warden stepped in.

"You have a visitor."

I got up, making my way to the visiting room. In that moment, I knew it was Max, and I let myself hope a little. When I entered, I saw him seated in a corner.

He was finally here. He had come to take me home. He had realized it was all a mistake. He would apologize, hold me in his arms, and everything would be okay.

But when I took a seat opposite him, he didn't look at me with warmth or regret. He looked at me with cold indifference. And in his hand, there was an envelope.

"Max?" My voice trembled. "You came to get me out?"

He said nothing. Just dropped the envelope onto the table between us. It landed with a heavy thud, and my heart sank.

"What is this?" I asked.

"Divorce papers." His voice was flat, emotionless. Like I didn't mean anything to him anymore.

I stared at the envelope in disbelief. This couldn't be happening. It wasn't real. It was a nightmare. Any second now, I would wake up, and Max would be beside me, holding me close. Telling me he loved me.

But the papers were real. And so was the pain slicing through my chest.

"Sign them," he said, crossing his arms. "And you'll be free to go."

I blinked, my vision blurring with fresh tears. "You're... divorcing me?"

Max didn't flinch. Didn't soften. "You should've thought about that before you stole from my family."

"I didn't steal anything. Max, you know me. You know I would never-"

"I don't know you," he cut me off in a harsh tone. "Not anymore."

My heart shattered into a million pieces. The final pieces of it crumbled to dust. There was a painful ache in my chest, making it hard for me to breathe. I thought I had more time. More time to fix this, to make him see that I loved him. But he was already gone.

"I love you," I whispered, my voice breaking. "Please... don't do this."

Max let out a bitter laugh, shaking his head. "You're absolutely pathetic, Tamara. I can't believe I ever wasted my time on someone like you. Let's be real-if you were me, would you even want to stay married to someone like you? A spineless thief with nothing to offer? You're worthless. And have you even looked at yourself in the mirror lately? Why would I ever want to go out and call that my wife? You're an embarrassment-inside and out."

I stared at him, the man I loved, the man I married, and realized that the person I thought he was no longer existed. Or maybe he never did.

Tears spilled down my cheeks as I reached for the pen, my hands shaking. I didn't want to sign. I didn't want to let him go. But there was no choice.

I scribbled my name on the dotted line. My heart broke with every stroke of the pen.

Max watched me with a cruel smile. And when I was done, he laughed.

"Good luck with your life, " he said mockingly before turning and walking away without a second glance.

He walked out of the room, leaving me sitting there alone. My tears fell silently onto the cold floor.

And this time, there was no one to wipe them away
