Chapter 1 An errand

Aria hastened her pace toward the palace, the heavy bucket of wolf's bane weighing her down. As a regular task assigned by the alpha, she was responsible for delivering the potent herbs used to restrain the powerful lycan imprisoned in the underground dungeon. The stories she'd heard about the lycan's strength and ferocity only made her job more ominous.

As she struggled to walk faster, the bucket's weight bearing down on her, Aria gritted her teeth. No one suspected that beneath her boyish attire and mannerisms lay a girl, and she intended to keep it that way. Her height, slightly above average for a female, and slender build helped her blend in seamlessly with the boys.

Just as she was starting to feel overwhelmed, a guard's taunt cut through the air. "Be a man and hurry up, the alpha is waiting!" Aria bit back a retort, her eyes flashing with annoyance. She forced herself to grunt and groan, adopting a masculine tone to avoid arousing suspicion. The guard's words stung, but she knew she had to maintain her disguise at all costs. With a surge of determination, she heaved the bucket up, continuing on her way to the palace.

In this world, human women were often treated poorly, viewed as fragile and inferior. They were frequently used for pleasure, their roles in society severely limited. Aria knew this reality all too well, which is why she had taken great care to conceal her true identity. By adopting masculine attire and mannerisms, she had managed to blend in with the males, who enjoyed relatively more freedom.

Aria had even gone so far as to learn how to mask her scent, ensuring that her disguise was foolproof. As a result, she was able to move about with a degree of liberty that would have been impossible for a female. Her task, however, was not an easy one. She had to constantly be on guard, ensuring that her actions and behavior remained consistent with those of a male.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, Aria arrived at the alpha's chambers, the heavy bucket of wolf's bane weighing her down. She bowed low, her voice deep and rough as she addressed the alpha. "Here's the wolf's bane, your majesty."

The alpha's eyes narrowed slightly as he inspected the contents of the bucket, then nodded in approval. "Good, now run along. I'll summon you when I need you," he said, dismissing her.

Aria turned to leave, but the alpha's next words brought her to a sudden halt. "You know, if you were a female, you'd have been one of my mistresses. For a boy, you really have a beautiful face and womanly features."

Aria's eyes widened, and she turned to face the alpha, her heart racing. For a moment, she forgot to maintain her masculine demeanor, her instincts screaming at her to defend herself. But she quickly regained control, a hint of a smile playing on her lips.

"But unfortunately, I'm not, your highness. Fate has different plans," she replied, her voice steady.

The alpha raised an eyebrow, seemingly intrigued by her response. After a moment, he nodded and dismissed her with a wave of his hand. Aria turned and let out a quiet breath, relief washing over her. She walked away, her mind racing with thoughts of her narrow escape. She knew she had to be more careful in the future, for in this world, one misstep could prove disastrous.

Aria walked out of the palace, her footsteps lightening as she made her way to the men's chambers. Although she had a separate room, the communal washroom was a constant source of anxiety for her. The other guards had begun to whisper among themselves, speculating that she must be dirty or unclean, given her reluctance to use the shared facilities.

Little did they know, Aria had taken great care to create a small, secluded space within her room, complete with a wash bucket and a makeshift bathing area. This secret sanctuary allowed her to maintain her personal hygiene without risking exposure. The thought of being discovered in the communal washroom, with its rough, rowdy atmosphere, sent shivers down her spine.

As she entered her room, Aria locked the door carefully behind her, ensuring she had the privacy she so desperately needed. With a sigh of relief, she jumped onto her bed, shedding the bindings that flattened her breasts. The sensation of freedom was palpable as she let out a deep breath, her body relaxing into its natural shape.

For a moment, Aria closed her eyes, wondering how long she could sustain this charade. How much longer could she continue to live as a boy, pretending to be someone she wasn't? The weight of her secret bore down on her, and she couldn't help but feel a pang of longing for the freedom to be herself, without fear of reprisal or judgment. But for now, she knew she had to keep up the act, no matter the cost.

Aria's thoughts drifted to the enigmatic lycan imprisoned in the dungeon beneath the palace. She had caught whispers of his existence, tales of a powerful being held captive by the alpha's cunning. Her curiosity was piqued, and she found herself wondering what he looked like, what kind of man could evoke such fear and respect from those around her.

She recalled the one time she had followed the alpha to the dungeon, her heart racing with anticipation. As they descended into the dark, damp corridors, the air grew thick with the scent of mold and decay. Aria had strained to catch a glimpse of the lycan, but the guards had blocked her view, their imposing figures a deliberate barrier between her and the prisoner.

Despite the obstruction, she had heard the lycan's moans of pain and agony, his voice like a low, husky growl that sent shivers down her spine. The sound was both captivating and unnerving, a primal reaction that left her breathless. She had felt an inexplicable pull towards the mysterious prisoner, a sense of fascination that lingered long after she had left the dungeon.

Aria wondered how the alpha had managed to capture such a powerful being. Lycans were rare and formidable creatures, their strength and ferocity legendary. The fact that this one had been subdued and imprisoned seemed almost impossible, unless... unless the alpha had employed treachery and deceit to ensnare him.

The more she thought about it, the more Aria became convinced that this must have been the case. The alpha's reputation for ruthlessness and cunning was well deserved, and she had no doubt that he would stop at nothing to achieve his goals. Still, she couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration for the lycan, a man who had likely been a force to be reckoned with before his capture.

As she lay on her bed, her imagination ran wild with visions of the lycan, his rugged features and piercing eyes etched into her mind like a sketch on parchment. She longed to catch a glimpse of the man behind the legend, and to understand the secrets that lay hidden beneath his imposing exterior. Someday, she vowed, she would find a way to uncover the truth about the lycan, and perhaps, just perhaps, she would discover a kindred spirit in the process.
