Chapter 1 The Ceremony of Ashes

CHAPTER ONE: The Ceremony of Ashes

POV: Sabarina Vale & Lucas Reign

Sabarina POV

The scent of pine smoke and silence in the air, thick enough to choke her. Sabarina stood in the middle of the Blackthorn ceremonial hall, her cloak draped low over her face. No one recognized her and that was exactly the way she wanted it.

Tonight, Lucas Reign would claim his Luna.

And it wouldn't be her.

She gripped the edge of her sleeve, knuckles whitening. Beneath the illusion spell, her pulse thundered with restrained magic. Her heart... with something worse.

Five years ago, she would've walked into this ceremony with joy in her chest and a promise on her lips. She would've stood beside him in loyalty, ready to build a future together.

But five years ago, Lucas Reign had shattered her.

He had looked her in the eye, announced his rejection in front of the entire pack, and called her unworthy.

"A hybrid"

"A liability"

"Weak"

She didn't beg to be loved or chosen instead

She had disappeared.

And she'd vowed never to return until Kaelen had asked her to come back.

Now, hidden among the crowd of wolves, Sabarina watched the man who had once held her heart... and the woman who stood beside him, about to take her place.

Lady Maris. Regal. Ruthless. Every inch the political pawn Lucas had chosen.

"Smile for your people, Alpha," she whispered under her breath. "Smile while you choke."

Lucas Reign POV

He couldn't breathe.

Lucas stood at the altar of the Moon Stone, the ceremonial bond mark glowing faintly on his wrist. His pack cheered. The music of drums and howls rose around him. Lady Maris was smiling at him like a queen about to conquer a kingdom.

And all he could feel was emptiness.

"No bond"

"No spark"

"No peace"

Just silence....

He'd told himself this was the right choice choosing Maris had solidified political alliances, calmed the dissent among the northern packs. It had made him untouchable.

But the cost...

He hadn't dreamt of Maris in years. He dreamed of her violet eyes, untamed laughter, that hybrid fire that no council could contain. The mate the Moon Goddess gave him... and he had cast away.

A chill ran up his spine.

He turned his head slightly.

And for one split second, through the sea of guests, his gaze locked onto a cloaked figure in the shadows watching him. He couldn't see her face, but his wolf roared.

Mine.

The bond, long dormant, flared with a violent ache in his chest.

Sabarina.

Sabarina POV

She had come to watch him break his vows. To witness the hollow bond he chose over fate.

But the moment their eyes met, she staggered back as if struck.

The bond.

It wasn't dead.

It had never died.

And worse... it was growing.

Before she could flee, a cold presence brushed against her side.

Kaelen.

"You shouldn't be here," he murmured, voice low, warning sharp as a blade.

"I had to see for myself."

His jaw clenched. "You're trembling."

Sabarina swallowed. "It's not fear."

Kaelen's eyes narrowed. "Then what is it?"

She didn't answer. Because she didn't know if it was fury or heartbreak.

As the ceremony of the Moon Stone was shattered.

Through the crowd. Wolves fell silent. The glowing rune cracked down the middle with a shriek of ancient magic.

Elder Maddox rose in alarm, "This union is... cursed.

And then Lucas collapsed.

Poison pulsed through his veins, veins darkening. His eyes rolled back. Chaos erupted.

She didn't hesitate.

Sabarina pushed through the crowd, her cloak burning away in a flash of violet light. Wolves snarled. Elders shouted. Maris screamed.

Lucas ......Lucas Lucas

Please wake up

But Lucas lay dying, breath shallow, pulse fading.

His eyes fluttered open, blood at the corner of his mouth.

"Sabarina?" he rasped.

She leaned in close. "I didn't come here to save you, Lucas."

And yet, her fingers glowed as they hovered above his chest.

"You're not worth my magic," she whispered... but her power surged anyway.

And just before her light touched him Kaelen grabbed her arm.

"Don't," he said, voice ice. "Let him die."

Sabarina's eyes met his-torn, furious, aching.

And she had to choose.
