Chapter 1

I loved Jeff, and everyone knew it.

I followed him without any pride, thinking it would make him notice me.

But in the end, he ran off from our engagement party, turning me into a laughingstock.

Later, I exposed deception for him.

After months of clarity, Jeff crossed an ocean to see me, determined to win me back.

I stared at him in shock, his confidence unwavering.

Then I took Edmund's hand and walked to my parents.

Jeff, always so defiant, went pale. "Audrey, do I still have a chance?"

At the engagement party, Jeff ran off with Vania in front of everyone.

The crowd below buzzed with whispers, their eyes on me filled with mockery or pity.

Moments earlier, a woman had burst into the banquet, her gaze accusing as she glared at Jeff. "I trusted you, Jeff. You're nothing but a liar."

The moment I saw her, my heart turned cold.

I knew her. Vania, the one Jeff had secretly loved for years.

From the second she appeared, his eyes never left her.

My heart grew colder with every passing moment.

Vania spun around and stormed off in anger, the crowd craning their necks to watch.

Jeff let go of my hand to chase after her.

I grabbed his hand instinctively, pleading, "Jeff, you can't leave."

He turned back, his handsome face cold and sharp, his piercing eyes glaring at me. "Let go!"

My pupils trembled as I slowly released his hand. "If you leave now, what happens to us? Are you going to make both our families a joke?"

Jeff sneered, his icy gaze fixed on me. "When you begged me to marry you, you should've known this day would come."

With that, he turned and ran straight after Vania.

The crowd's pitying looks fell on me. I stared at his retreating figure, never once looking back, my heart frozen, my hopes shattered into pieces.

The engagement party ended abruptly, and my parents were furious.

"Brody, this was your son's engagement to my daughter. He left her in front of everyone to run off with someone else. How is my daughter supposed to face this?"

Brody forced a smile, his face strained. "Jeff knows how important today is. If he ran off, it must be for something urgent. He'll be back soon, and I'll make sure he explains himself."

My dad sat silently on the couch, his face dark with anger. "Brody, your son is twenty-five, isn't he? How can he still act so recklessly?"

"I'm truly sorry about this. I'll call him right now. Chris, please don't be upset. We've known each other forever. You know the kind of person I am. When he gets back, I'll make sure he gets an earful."

As they argued, I looked up and spoke. "Brody, let's just call off the engagement."

Brody shot to his feet, his face flushed with anger. "Audrey, how can you say that? I've seen how much you care for Jeff all these years. You can't let this misunderstanding ruin things. When he's back, I'll make him explain."

"No need." I gave a faint, bitter smile. "I love him, but he doesn't love me."

Even if I didn't want to admit it, I could no longer deceive myself.

The one he loved was the girl who showed up at the banquet. Vania.
