A cozy, romantic autumn scene in a small town. In the foreground, a couple stands close together on a leaf-covered path under golden-orange trees. The woman has long wavy auburn hair, wearing a soft cream sweater and jeans, and the man has short dark hair, wearing a plaid flannel shirt and boots. They are gazing into each other's eyes, gently holding hands. Behind them, there's a quaint bakery with a sign that reads "Apple Pie Café," its windows glowing warmly. The sky is painted in soft pastel hues of a late afternoon autumn sunset, with leaves drifting in the breeze.

Chapter 1 A Return to Maplewood

Emma Collins hadn't set foot in Maplewood, Vermont in over a decade. The small town, with its golden autumn leaves, crisp apple-scented air, and sleepy charm, had once been her world. But after her mother died, Emma had left for college and never looked back-until now. Her grandmother's bakery, *The Sugar Maple*, had fallen on hard times. A call from her Aunt June had pulled Emma away from her buzzing New York City life, her marketing job, and a string of failed relationships.

The paint on the sign had chipped, but the sweet scent of cinnamon and butter wafting through the cracked door was unchanged. She stepped inside. "Emma?" A voice behind the counter-deep, familiar, and utterly unexpected-made her freeze. She turned slowly. "Liam?" Liam Walsh. Her childhood best friend, high school sweetheart, and the boy who broke her heart when he stayed behind while she chased bigger dreams. "What are you doing here?" she asked, trying to keep her tone light. "I could ask you the same," he replied with a crooked grin. "I've been helping your aunt keep this place running. She said you were coming." Emma blinked. "You've been helping run *The Sugar Maple*?" He shrugged. "Didn't think I'd ever bake pies for a living, but I couldn't let this place die. Your grandma taught me everything I know." Emotion swelled in her chest. The past rushed back-apple picking, late-night walks by the lake, Liam kissing her under the harvest moon. But that was another lifetime.
