One night a tornado takes the town by surprise and they set to checking on neighbors and things build fast from there.
Sister Jenna Hart sat in Father Tom's office waiting for him to get done his boys youth group. She had a sinking feeling that she knew what was coming. She was being "freed from service" a polite way of saying the nunnery's bed space was tight. She knew 2 other sisters had been gave that news. This orphanage, nunnery and Christian school at least gave the nuns a decent severance package.
A car of their choice from the schools used car lot that they made sure would pass even the most vicious inspections, a hefty check of $120,000.00, travel money from the school kitty money and decent clothes and the basics for kitchenware usually a table ware set, pot and pan set and utensils that the wood class made. Most of their habits were returned to the school except if the sisters requested their lighter head coverings.
The door opened and she bowed her head and to Father Tom.
The meeting went as she assumed. There would be a farewell ceremony on Thursday night then Friday morning the 4 sisters would leave. She had been wanting to return to where her family was. A rather small country town 2 hours away called Glennridge. She talked with the others after dinner are found they were going elsewhere.
Thursday came fast. Each helped pack their vehicles. They had gone out Tuesday and bought cellular phones all new iPhones through AT&T. They promised to stay in touch. Friday morning she grabbed a huge travel cup of coffee and headed out.
She already had found a decent rental home and had interviewed for the 2 jobs she had gotten. She was heads and tails more prepared than the others. They would be in a hotel until they could get a job and residence.
She pulled into the driveway of the tiny townhouse she was renting at a hefty cost. But she also had agreed to a fully furnished rent to own agreement. She had a check that she brought next door to the elderly landlord Fanny Turner. She was met by a tiny yet fit woman and a huge dog. The older woman gave her the keys. And came over to help her move her few boxes in.
"My you don't have much do you?" She said.
"No ma'am just left the convent 2 hours ago." She locked her doors using her key fob and laughed in delivering.
"I take it that all this is a cultural upheaval then? Where you born or did folks from round here abandon you up there?" She asked. She showed her that she had brought in the essentials.
"I was born to Hendrix and Sally Glenn in 98. I guess they didn't want me." She put a pot of water to boil.
"My lord I knew they were pregnant back then but her parents wouldn't hear of keeping the baby. You sure started out different than they did. Why your dad's the mayor, older brother is the lawyer and mother is the owner of most business in town. Heck your dad's parents and I are close friends:" she said. Fanny gave her the rundown of everything in town. Then she had to leave for a woman's group put on by the local baptist church.
She had to start her shift at the gas station at 3, ended up early to make sure her uniform fit.
Tina Denton the manager trained her during her first hour.
"You're a fast learner Jenna. I wouldn't be surprised if you knew what our regulars want by Monday. I am off until Tuesday morning. Have a great time and welcome. Also feel free to help yourself to things in the employee room." She then left in a red ford ranger with a single black door on the passenger side.
The night went smoothly around 6 things sped up as most were headed home for the night. She learned the preferences of most of the town by the end of her shift. She grabbed a water in the staff room after she clicked the sign to closed. She then restocked the items us FIFO system, swept and mopped the floors, cashed out the machines placed the sales slips and cash in the safe. Triple checked the locks and then went home.
She slept until 6 then made herself scrambled eggs and toast for breakfast. Checked that home was clean, secured it and went to her other job. She was waiting outside for her boss to open the door.
"Greetings Mrs. Glenn. I am Jenna Hart and I thank you for hiring me.
