Chapter 1 Blunt Request

I sat on the crowded train on my way to New York. I hadn't been here in almost a decade and coming back brought so many memories, many I'd suppressed. I had parted on bad terms with my sister Blaire, and we hadn't spoken in years. I really didn't want to see her, but I had no choice. "Come home immediately, it's urgent", Mum had said, without giving me any info as to why I should return. I was tempted to turn off my phone and just ignore her, but something in her tone made me concerned.

As I got to the station, I booked an Uber straight home. Upon arrival, I noticed that loads of gifts and wine packages were all over the kitchen counter. The lights were turned off and when I flicked the switch, the whole room was empty. I called out to mum and my voice echoed across the room. Getting worried, I moved quickly around the house searching for signs of life. The whole place was quiet and even Blaire, who would normally be playing loud music from her room, was nowhere to be found. As I searched the bedrooms, I finally found mom sitting in the room Blaire, and we used to share as kids. She was holding her phone and crying. As she looked up and saw me, relief flooded her eyes.

"Thank God you're finally here. Oh, thank God".

"Woah, I didn't think you missed me that much", I told her jokingly.

"This isn't the time for jokes Selina, your sister's gone! She's gone! I woke up this morning and I couldn't find her anymore. Her room is empty too."

"Gone?" "I don't understand, gone where?" I asked, confusingly.

"I don't know Selina, I don't know, and we were supposed to go pick up the dress today. "What on earth are we going to do? "I haven't even called Damon," she said, her eyes filling up with tears.

"Slow down mum, I'm so fucking confused, please start from the beginning, what dress? "And who is Damon?" I asked.

She breathed deeply, and then she told me, starting from the beginning. Blaire was engaged to be wedded in a day, apparently to a rich billionaire who had been taking care of her and even got dad a place in his company. They had been in love for a while before he asked her to marry him. As part of the engagement gift, he'd gifted her deeds to acres of land down in Manhattan. As she told me the story, my thoughts wondered about my own life. Down in Florida, I worked as a fry cook in a small restaurant where I worked long hours for next to nothing. Even though we were twins, we lived like polar opposites. She always got the fair side of life while I was left to clean up after her. Even in high school, the good-looking boys would never go after me, instead they would rush to Blair like ants to sugar. Back then I always wondered why. I mean we practically looked the same, so what made me different?

"Are you listening Selina?" Mom asked, breaking me out of my reverie.

"Yes, so what are you going to do?" I asked her, purposely shifting the responsibility from myself. I had stopped cleaning up after Blaire years ago, and I didn't just travel that many hours to do it again. Hell no.

"I don't know, but we have to think of something. The wedding is in a day".

I sighed and fell back into bed, thinking of the next possible move, when I saw a piece of paper that sat on the dresser. I reached for it and grabbed it and, after reading the note, I sighed. Blaire had done it again.

I read it out loud to Mum.

"Mom, I'm really sorry to do this, but I can't hide it anymore. I fell out of love with Damon and I couldn't force myself to be with him. Steve and I have left the country, and we plan on starting a family together. Please don't look for me, I love you all."

"Oh God!" Mom said, bursting into tears. "How could she do this? What on earth are we going to do?" She asked again, rocking forward.

"Why don't you call her Fiancé and call off the wedding?"

"Are you crazy? What do you think he's going to do when we tell him? "Say okay and move on?" "Don't you know who he is?" "We could lose everything!" she yelled.

We both sat quietly on the bed, each of us consumed with our own thoughts. Suddenly, Mom spoke.

"You love your sister, don't you?"

I rolled my eyes. "Of course I do". I told her.

"That's good, and you know you were born an hour before her, so you're her elder sister, right?"

"Yes" I replied. I wonder where she was heading with this.

She looked at me and nodded repeatedly.

"Why don't you marry him, Selina?"

I burst out laughing, it was the most ridiculous thing I'd heard all year. Love wasn't my thing. I realized that ages ago. Plus, why would I marry someone I had never met in my life? Someone that my sister had tossed? I'm not picking up her leftovers again. No Fucking way.
