"Luna Anna, you are four weeks pregnant," the suspicion I had for the past month was confirmed by the pack doctor in the consultation room. My heart started racing with bubbling joy as he handed me the results, I took it with sweaty palms and teary eyes.
Me...pregnant? After 5 fruitless years of marriage? I thought it would never happen but now, the proof of it was in my grasp.
"Thank you, doctor...my husband will be so happy when he hears this."
At that moment I could already imagine Ray's face lighting up with unrivaled happiness.
He would rub my tummy with light affection knowing that within me was a life that will grow into our child and the heir of the Alpha's seat was right in there.
Unable to withhold my excitement anymore, I rushed to the pack house.
But just outside our bedroom, I was met with a devastating revelation.
"When are we going to tell that woman that I'm pregnant for you, Ray?"
I would be a fool to deny that I didn't recognize my own best friend's voice.
"Very soon, my love. Be patient, these things can get complicated if you rush them."
Or the voice of my husband.
The door had been left ooen an inch or so. So I stepped forward and pushed it an extra inch I'm order to see them inside the room.
Becky, my childhood best friend, was seated on my mate and husband's lap. Fondly caressing his cheek. Her hair looks like a bird's nest, and her face was flushed enough to tell me what they had been doing before I came here and overheard their conversation.
Stinging tears struck my eyes, seeing both of them like this finally confirmed a creeping suspicion I had always locked in the back of my mind.
It explained the short but passionate stares exchanged between the two of them from time to time, the light touches that seem to linger for a moment too long.
The first and only time I brought it up,that three years ago, Ray looked like he was all but ready to split my head open like a coconut.
"Are you out of your mind? What are you trying to imply?!"
I had shivered and shrunk into a ball of fear only managing to whisper; "I don't know, but sometimes it looks like the two of you are closer than you and I,"
He only got more furious.
"Enough of that nonsense, you're my wife, my mate..my Luna. Why would I betray you?"
"I–"
"Maybe you need to see a psychiatrist, yes, if you can't trust your best friend who you've known since you were in diapers and your own husband and maybe there is something wrong with you up there,"
I had felt so ashamed after that moment that I never dared to bring it up again, turns out my suspicions were right and I had suppressed them for nothing.
"I'm tired of waiting!" Becky complained as she swung her legs back and forth on my husband's lap .
He stroked her hair with a soft tenderness in his eyes that I was a stranger to.
"You are already carrying my child, something that barren husk has never been able to do. Once I tell the Elder council they'll process our divorce at the speed of light and you'll assume your rightful position next to me as my Luna."
Hearing this, the frown on Becky's face immediately melted away.
"Yes, it was always meant to be mine from the start! I don't know why you let her choose you that night. During the mating ceremony, you could have just rejected her,"
There was a flash of something in Ray's eyes when he heard that, I was too far off to notice it. Was it guilt? Why would he feel any guilt? Especially for a "barren husk" like myself.
Why did he choose me? Becky was there that night. He could have bluntly rejected me and walked into her arms.
Instead, with tears in his eyes he had pulled me to his chest, kissed me on my lips and parted only to utter a promise to love me for his entire lifetime.
And unless he was dying anytime soon, that looks like it had been a complete lie.
More tears found their ways to my eyes, streaming down my cheeks. I had trusted this man, given him everything I had for the past 5 years only to find out that I had been taken for a fool.
I backed away, planning to run off, with the pregnancy result in my grip feeling like fire burning my skin.
My steps were unsteady and I ended up bumping into a decorative vase in the hallway. In seconds, a shattering sound followed and I felt panic in my heart when I heard Ray yell "Who's there?"
The sudden panic forced me to move forward and step on the broken pieces of the vase, it pierced my foot and I slipped on the ground more pieces penetrating my flesh causing me to scream out.
Hearing their approaching footsteps, I picked myself up ignoring this stinging pain from where I had been caught and started running. I was in such a rush I didn't realize that a shard was finding its way into my foot until it lodged itself deeply inside at the foot of the stairs.
"Agh!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, losing my balance and falling down the hard wooden stairs, every part of the fall felt like raining punches until I hit the floor with a final agonizing thud.
Ray and Becky dashed out of the bedroom and found me on the floor, bleeding.
When I looked up and stared at the faces of the two people I'd loved with every inch of my heart...there was no pity in their eyes for my gory state, only the words that put the final nail on the coffin of my affection for them.
"Becky, we have to bury her before anyone finds the body."
