"I'd rather jump into a pit of snakes than marry you." "Good thing I own the snakes." Brittany Hale hates Zayn Meadows. Zayn needs a wife to save his empire, and the infuriatingly stubborn Brittany is the perfect pawn. He'll torment her, provoke her, and make her regret ever crossing him... until their explosive clashes ignite something far more dangerous than hatred. Now, forced into a marriage of convenience, their battle of wills turns into a war of want-one neither of them can afford to lose. "Oh fuck, I'm late for my interview". I yelled as I jumped up and down my small Chicago apartment. I had an appointment to attend and was running late for it. "Don't forget your breakfast". Maddie, my best friend and roommate, said watching me going around in a panicked frenzy. She didn't even offer to help.
"Babe"! I shouted, throwing the closest pillow I could find. "What?" She responded, catching the pillow mid air. "Get off your ass and come help me, you realize that we need this job" I reminded her, goddammit this job could really save our asses.
Our rent was due in two weeks and we haven't really covered up to half of the amount needed. Maddie worked at a restaurant hopping from table to table during the day and worked as a bartender at a local club during the night. Today was her day off though from her day job. I finally got all of my documents packed, ready to go in my bag when I felt Maddie easing the tension from my shoulders. I needed that. "Bitch relax, you've got this and I know you're gonna get that job. I know this and the universe also knows it". She smoothed out my hair and laid it in a tight bun while I adjusted my dress. For someone as messy as Maddie, she always finds a way to keep me on track . "I love you bitch" I kissed her forehead and hurried out of the house.
I arrived at the company and made my way to the receptionist desk. "Hi, I'm here for the interview". I flashed my pearls of shiny white while waiting for her to respond. She gave me a once over, gave me a number tag and directed me to the lounge area. I made my way to the couch and got comfortable. Using the spare time I had, I rehearsed every possible answer to questions the interviewer might ask. The office had a modern style and the environment was really voiced eloquence.
I glanced up and saw the receptionist talking into her telephone, hopefully it was about me. I was getting tired of sitting here staring at art. Don't get me wrong, I love art but I can't bear sitting down for hours. The receptionist called out my number and told me to go to the 5th floor, apparently that's where the interview was held. On reaching the 5th floor, I met another receptionist who looked like she had been waiting for me. "I'm here for the interview ma'am". I politely said. The girl didn't bother looking up but pointed her finger at a large door. It was an oak double door which had tiny engravings on each side. I stood at the door for a little while mumbling a short prayer before stepping in.
The office was exquisite, quite grand to be exact. The interior decor revealed the owner to be minimalistic and very vogue. "Ahem" Someone cleared their throat, how could I have missed him sitting there. The one who held my fate in his hands right now. I walked curtly to his desk and greeted. "No need for the greetings, sit and hand me your resume". He responded. I handed my credentials over to him and he simply glanced through them.
"You understand what work you'll be doing? Miss ...?" " Miss Hale sir, and yes I applied as a secretary". I answered his question but he just stared into my eyes, his cold stare burning holes into my chest.
"Unfortunately Miss Hales, you shall be working as a nanny". What? Nanny? "Excuse me sir but that's not what I applied for" I tried my best not to lose my temper. "Well, that's what I'm giving you. You either take it or leave it." He handed my documents back to me and got back to typing away on his computer. I put my things away and headed for the door.
"Ohh and Miss Hales, you have 12 hours to make that decision. Make sure to shut the door behind you". He said casually. I made sure to shut the door with a heavy bang making his receptionist look up at me.Stupid prick. She probably thought I had some balls for doing that to her boss.
I stepped into the elevator and called Maddie. "Bitch, hope you got that job", her high pitched voice serenaded my phone which made me instantly calm. "Unfortunately Mads, I didn't." I spilled every single detail to her while she silently listened, absorbing every single word. "I think you should get the nanny job". Maddie said "What? Why?" There's no way she was telling me to accept the offer. " I think you should, it's the only thing you've gotten in weeks. God knows when next you'll land another job and besides the rents getting due in two weeks" Maddie reasoned with me. " I get your point babes, but that guy gives me the creeps. Just one look at him and I can tell he's dangerous." I responded sounding a little bit foolish. "Babe accept the job but stay away from him. And since when did Brittany Hale start getting afraid of danger?" She teased. "Alright, gonna end the call now. I'll see you at home. Love you." "Love you too Mads." She disconnected the call.
I pressed the 5th floor button abandoning my plan to leave the building. The elevator bell chimed and I stepped out, adjusting my hair and dress once more. I walked forward toward the receptionist and told her that I would like to see her boss. She looked up from her work and looked at me quizzically as if I fell from the heavens. "What for?" She asked. Her lips heavily coated with so much lipstick, anytime she opened her mouth, she risked it smudging. The huge double doors came open and we both turned her to the direction of the sound.
The interviewer stepped out and passed us like there weren't people standing here. He walked up to the what I didn't realise waa a second elevator. Maybe it was for the executives. He turned his back " Bailey, prepare the files I need for my next meeting and also...". He paused and looked over to me ".......Give Miss Hale the pair of uniforms I told you to pick up earlier". He ordered. "Yes, Mr. Zayn". The skanky receptionist replied batting her eyelids at him. That's disgusting. She looked over at me and gave me a scowl. I simply smiled back refusing to be part of her folly. Obviously that ticked her off as she got the 'uniforms' out of her bottom locker and threw it at me. "Be here by 8am and be prompt". The boss doesn't like tardiness". She sat down to continue her work and I took that as my cue to leave.
I left the office building and took the bus back to my house. I couldn't stand another hour being on an empty stomach. Maddie wasn't home when I got there but there was food. Thank God. I munched down the food happily thanking God he brought Mads into my life. I did the dishes and found my way to my room. I slipped out of my clothes, put on my night wear and got into bed. Today was a long day and I was sure happy as hell it has come to an end. Tomorrow might be worse. Who knows what it had in store for me
