Reg sat in his favourite seat in his study reading a newspaper in his hand when he heard a knock.
"Come in." he said, not even looking at the door.
His aide entered and walked towards him, he bent and whispered something in his ear.
His eyes lit up as he stood up. He went towards the drawer on his table, talking out a gun, he headed out.
"Where is he? That son of a –" the voice went down as Reg walked down the stairs towards the living room.
A middle-aged man stood in the center of five guards wielding guns. His hands appeared to be shaking as he held his gun. Blood stains could be seen on his shirt which resulted from fighting his way in but that was of no concern to him.
"Reg!!!" the man exclaimed upon seeing him.
Reg came to a halt a few metres away from the bloodied man.
"What did you do to my wife?" He yelled, demanding an answer.
"She approached me of her own free will." Reg spoke in a calm tone, which enraged the other man.
"You took advantage of her and raped her!" he screamed, tears streaming down his cheeks.
Reg placed a thumb on his lips, "She helped you pay off your debt. Are you not grateful? When you could not do anything, she willingly offered herself as an exchange."
"You asshole."
More tears streamed down his cheeks, and his hands trembled as he held the gun and pointed it at Reg. In retaliation, Reg's aide and the other guys raised their guns.
"Do you know she is dead?," the man questioned bitterly.
Reg's eyes were wide with shock.
"She committed suicide, leaving only a note," he said, raising his gun at Reg. "You caused all of this, and you will pay the price." He then pulled the trigger and shot Reg's left arm. Before he could shoot again, bullets from various directions pierced his body, causing him to lose control and fall to the ground.
"You will pay Reg, you will pay." he kept on saying until there was nothing but a lifeless body before them.
CHAPTER ONE
Lexi tucked a wave of blonde hair behind her ears as she stared at herself in the mirror. She admired herself for the umpteenth time, correcting any minor flaws in her makeup; she did not want to ruin her first day of college with a sloppy appearance.
Soon she heard a knock on the door and got up to open it. Her father stood before her with a stern expression. Mr. Thompson, the CEO of Pinnacle Investments, was a strict man with an attitude Lexi despised, but he was her father after all. She does everything she can to dispel any negative rumors about her father, who raised her after his wife, her mother, had left. Nothing could be more loving than raising her in the best manner he could. To her, he was simply a loving father.
"Good morning, Dad," Lexi said as she opened the door.
"Good morning, dear. How is your preparation going? He inquired.
"I was just correcting some minor errors, but I am ready," she said with a smile.
"You should have told me ahead of time so I could get you a make-up artist so you would not have to go through all of this."
She smiled, "I am fine, dad."
"If you say so," he replied, "actually, I got you a bodyguard. Since you will be attending college, I need someone to drive you to and from school while also ensuring your safety."
"Dad, you do not have-" She could not finish her sentence when she saw the man behind her father; she was surprised she had not noticed him before. At her father's signal, the young man stepped forward and stood next to him.
"This is Ethan Blackwood. Your new bodyguard." Mr. Thompson announced.
The man took off his sunglasses and looked at her, "Good day, Miss Lexi."
Lexi felt her heart melt as she stared at him. Her bodyguard was an attractive man with blue icy eyes, a well-sculpted face, and a muscular body; his features contrasted with those of a model, but he was not a model, only a bodyguard.
"Good day, Mr. Ethan," She said with a smile.
"Grab your belongings and come downstairs; he will be waiting." Her father kissed her goodbye and said, "Have a great day at school."
Lexi walked down the stairs to meet Ethan who was already waiting. He rushed to her and helped carry her bag as they walked out. They walked to the Rolls Royce that was parked in front of the building.
"Thank you," she replied as he opened the door to let her in.
The ride to school appeared to be quiet, with each person absorbed in the scenery around them. At various time intervals, Ethan would take a glance at Lexi through the rearview mirror.
"You know you don't have to always look back. It's not like I would do something stupid." Lexi voiced out after noticing him for too long.
She was expecting a response, but he remained silent, his eyes fixed on the road.
"Have you done this before?" she inquired, breaking the silence once more.
"No, Miss," he responded.
"Please refer to me as Lexi; my friends and family already do."
Ethan looked at her in the mirror, "I am neither friend nor family."
This is going to be difficult, she realized.
Soon her phone rang, it was Emilia Grey, her childhood best friend who would be attending the same college.
"Hey, girl," Lexi said into the phone.
"Hi Lexi. I can't wait to see you." Emilia said.
"Me too. I will be there soon." she said and hung up.
She sounded ecstatic to meet her childhood friend. After the death of Emilia's mother, her father remarried and they had to relocate. That was 10 years ago but their friendship was far from over as they sent emails to one another. When Emilia broke the news that she would be attending Ravenhurst University, Lexi was so happy. It had implied that they would meet again. Despite the happiness, Lexi felt a little sad. What if Emilia had changed, and she was not the young, lively, dark-haired girl she had grown to adore? The answers to these questions were what she feared.
"Miss Lexi," Ethan's deep voice brought her back to reality, "we have arrived."
She looked out the window at the breathtaking sight of Ravenhurst University in all its glory.
"Thank you." She said once again as the door was opened up for her by her able-bodied guard.
"I would wait out here for you. If there is a problem don't hesitate to call me."
She gave him a look. This was the longest he had spoken since they met.
"You don't have to wait for me. I can call you when I am done." she added, "I don't have your number actually."
He reached into his shirt's breast pocket and handed her a card.
"It is in there."
She collected the card and placed it in her bag as she walked towards the school gate.
Ravenhurst University as it stands is a private university in the Ivy League that is renowned for its academic brilliance, selective admissions, and charming campus. The architecture of the university blends modern and traditional design elements, resulting in stunning glass-clad buildings and stone, historic structures.
As she walked in, she could feel people staring at her. It must be surprising to see her out without a bodyguard in school, given that her father values her safety, among other things. She had been kept at home, away from the media and prying eyes; even her education took place at home. She was now a student at the most prestigious university, where she was sent to learn and socialize with her peers. It just seems too good to be true.
"Lexi!" someone called.
She turns to see Emilia behind her. A dark haired girl with light freckles and a beaming smile. Lexi noticed that her best friend has not changed much except for the addition of an ear piercing and an increase in height.
"Emilia!"
"You have grown taller," Emilia stated.
"You too." Lexi grinned.
"I saw you with a handsome guy out there; is that Liam Jenkins you mentioned?" She asked.
Lexi frowned slightly upon hearing Liam's name. "Do not tell me you guys fought again?"
Liam was her boyfriend and the man she was supposed to marry, according to her father. He is the son of a successful businessman, and marrying him would increase both families' wealth. Ever since they have been dating, their relationship has not been going well, they both know their love is not strong enough to make it stand but since it would benefit their families, they try hard to develop love.
"That's not Liam, that is my new bodyguard and no, I did not fight with Liam. Besides, he is the one who is always the cause of every problem." she tried to explain.
"Oh, anyways, that's something for you and your lover to sort out," she added, "Do you mean to tell me that man I just saw is your bodyguard?"
Lexi nodded.
"Mine is nowhere near that beauty." She teased, "So when would you introduce me to Liam and tell me everything?"
"Emilliaaa"
"Whattttt?" She laughed and said, "Oh, please, let us go. Lessons are about to begin."
"You haven't changed a bit." Lexi commented as they walked to class.
"You think?" Emilia raised an eyebrow.
Lexi responded with a nod. Perhaps things will return to normal now that she has her best friend with her. Who knows, maybe we can do the things we did not get to do, Lexi thought as she looked at Emilia. Only time will tell.
"You're pathetic!" Brenden sneered, each word cutting deep into Corinna's heart. Years of emotional wounds had drained every ounce of love she once held. "I've wasted enough time on you. If there's a next life, I hope we never meet again." Her words severed the bond between them like a blade. From that moment on, Brenden was haunted by her absence—unable to sleep, longing for the warmth he took for granted.
