Gwen's POV
I stared at the huge frame of my beloved father inlaw, hot drops of tears trickled down my eyes.
I have been standing there for over ten minutes since Laura led me into our living room. It was his funeral today, and I'd say this was the worst day of my life.
Laura had tried to get me into the bed to get some sleep, but I couldn't just get myself to get some rest.
My heavy heart couldn't just fathom that I wouldn't be ever seeing him again.
Dr Lucas wasn't just my father inlaw, he was a loving father and mentor to me. He loved me like I was his biological daughter, showing me the fatherly love I had never experienced in my life, and now, I can't tell how I'd navigate life, especially in this house without him.
Laura walked up to me again, and offering me a napkin, she reminded me that she would be on her way as it was already getting dark.
"I hope you get some rest, Gwen."
She whispered calmly and I nodded, while thanking her for being there.
As she left, I decided to heed to her advice and force myself to sleep, but suddenly the door stormed open again and I was wondering if Laura had come back.
"You startled me, Sane. Though you said you, Oliver and mum won't be coming home tonight?"
I asked my sister inlaw, Sane, who walked up to me with the most dreaded gaze ever.
She, her mum and my husband, Oliver told me they'd sleep over at Albert's house, my father in law brother's house.
And I was wondering why she was here, and why the gaze.
"Oh, you better be more than startled because no one would defend your barren ass now grandfather is gone."
Sane stated as she walked up to me with an evil smirk, aiming to devour my throat.
I was taken aback by her words.
My feet made involuntary steps backwards as I walked away from her gaze.
She still did not stop coming closer.
Soon, she caught up with me again, eyes pressed on my stomach.
"You think you've climbed the ladder so fast? Well, you should have prayed for grandfather not to die. Poor Gwen, watch what will happen when Oliver gets back here."
Her words echoed into my ears like a loud bolt and I couldn't help but wonder what I had done wrong this time around.
I know Sane never liked me, but today was the worst day to bring up her drama.
We have just lost grandfather and this was what she had to say to a grieving daughter in law?
Dr Lucas is their grandfather and even though not their biological father, he was the one I got to know as father in law since I got married into the Patricks family.
Oliver took him as his dad after he lost his own father in a car accident.
I heaved a sad sigh.
"Sane has always been a crackhead." I muttered to myself, dismissing the thoughts that were beginning to crowd my mind.
Now I didn't know if I wanted to go get some sleep again.
She said Oliver was coming, so I needed to go make his tea.
My poor husband, watching him cry bitterly as Dr Lucas's grave was lowered, broke my heart, so I needed to make him something that would calm him.
Quickly, I dashed into the kitchen to make his favorite coffee.
Oliver loved his coffee thick and dark, and I was always at his service.
As I took out the coffee container from the shelf, I heard someone call my name with the harshest tone I have ever heard
Rushing back to the living room, Oliver was standing there with a brown envelope in his hands.
His masculine hands stretched towards me, signaling I took it.
"Baby, is everything ok? You startled me with the way you screamed my name"
My voice stuttered. My body couldn't deny the danger signals that his gaze emitted.
Oliver was mute and motionless and as soon as my hands landed on the envelope, he turned towards the stairs to walk upstairs.
"What is this?"
I muttered. Now Sane's words were back to haunt me, but how bad could the item in this envelope be at this point in our lives?
I quickly opened the envelope, and the first thing that stared at me was the word DIVORCE!.
My heart took involuntary skips as I glanced through the papers. They were divorce papers.
My eyes shut immediately, it was as if I was beginning to see double.
My throat itching in my mouth.
"No, this can't be. -- no, no, baby this is a joke right?"
I stuttered as I followed Oliver up the stairs.
My heart thumped hard as I followed him.
My breath was shutting down.
"Listen baby, I know you're stressed, and I totally understand, but serving me divorce papers? What have I done?
My voice stuttered, my hands trembled terribly as I walked behind him.
"You should be asking yourself what you haven't done, Gwen! You should."
His rich baritone voice roared, threatening to bring down the roof, while he made his way into his room.
We have been married for three years, but still share separate rooms.
"Look Gwen, if at all you're someone that tells yourself the truth, you should know that since the inception of this contraception called our marriage, nothing has been working. Nothing! Not even the barest thing a woman gives to her man, a child!" Now you dare stay there and ask me what you've done?"
His voice came again, gradually shutting down my breaths.
There Oliver goes again, bringing up my inability to conceive to mock me, despite all the effort I put in to make it work.
I tried to find my voice to speak, but the sight of another woman shut me up.
She waddled seductively to my husband, my Oliver, and ruffled his wavy black hair, her hands wrapped around his broad masculine shoulders, while their lips circled up in a kiss.
