She hides behind a mask. He hides behind his wealth. In the daylight, she's a top university student... brilliant, ambitious, and untouchable. But at night, she's the masked mystery ruling the streaming world, stripping for an audience that never sees her face. He's the heir to a billion-dollar empire, a tech genius with a cold heart. He only watches for fun until he finds her. Unlike the others, she doesn't bow to him. She challenges him. And he can't look away. Neither of them knows they walk the same halls... until her masked photos go viral at their university. Now, the world is watching. His family is watching. And when betrayal, jealousy, and obsession come into play, she's left with one terrifying question: Who is behind the screen, threatening to destroy her?

Chapter 1 THE WEIGHT OF SURVIVAL

Steam curled up from the industrial sink, the water scalding hot as Emery plunged her hands into the soapy depths. Grease clung to her fingers, the scent of old oil and detergent thick in the air. The clatter of plates and the distant chatter of customers filled the bustling restaurant, a mid-tier diner just on the outskirts of town.

She barely looked up when a waitress rushed past, balancing trays of burgers and fries. The dinner rush was brutal, but for Emery, this was just another day. Scrub, rinse, stack. Repeat. The rhythm was mind-numbing, but it kept the tips coming, and tips meant survival.

"Yo, Emery, you good?"

She turned to see Malik, one of the line cooks, wiping sweat from his brow. He was a broad-shouldered guy with tired eyes, probably just as drained as she was.

"Living the dream," she muttered, scrubbing harder at a stubborn stain.

Malik chuckled. "Yeah, well, dream faster. Boss says we're closing soon."

Emery nodded, rinsing off the last plate before stacking it with the others. The clock on the wall read 11:47 PM. She had schoolwork to finish, but exhaustion clung to her bones.

After clocking out and stuffing her small wad of tips into her jeans pocket, she pulled on her hoodie and stepped into the night. The city buzzed faintly in the distance, but here, the streets were quieter, lit only by flickering streetlights.

Her reflection in a store window caught her eye. Tall, but not too tall. Slim, with smooth, slightly fair skin that made her mixed heritage stand out. Her long, wavy dark hair framed her face, a perfect mix of Chinese-Asian and African features. Striking. Beautiful, even.

Not that it mattered. Beauty didn't pay bills.

She sighed and kept walking.

***

The ceiling fan groaned above, circling slowly, barely moving the thick summer air in their tiny apartment. The scent of fried plantains still lingered, though dinner had been meager just a few slices and leftover rice, barely enough to satisfy. Emery sat at the wobbly dining table, flipping through an old, borrowed textbook, though the words blurred together in her exhaustion.

Her phone buzzed beside her.

Lena: "Babes, I found something crazy. Call me."

Emery sighed. She barely had the energy for Lena's usual gossip, but something about the text felt urgent. She slipped out of the kitchen and into the cramped bedroom she shared with her younger brother. He was already asleep, curled into himself on their worn-out mattress. She stepped outside onto the narrow balcony, pressing the call button.

Lena picked up immediately. "Finally! I was about to kick down your door."

Emery rolled her eyes. "It's past ten. Whatever it is, can't it wait?"

"No, because I just found our way out of this broke life."

Emery leaned against the rusting railing. "Lena..."

"Listen, just hear me out. Have you ever heard of streaming?"

"Like video games?"

Lena laughed. "Not that kind. I'm talking about real money. Girls on this site make thousands just by dancing, teasing, talking to rich guys. No touching, no meeting up. Just... being there."

Emery frowned. "You're kidding."

"Dead serious. You don't even have to show your face! Some wear masks, wigs-whatever. It's easy money."

Easy money. The phrase made Emery uneasy. Nothing in life came easy, not for girls like them. "Lena, this sounds-"

"Too good to be true? I know, I thought so too. But I signed up. Made $100 in one night."

Emery's breath caught. One hundred dollars? That was more than her mom made in a week working double shifts at the diner.

"Just think about it," Lena urged. "I'll send you the link. You don't have to decide now."

Emery hesitated before mumbling, "Okay."

She hung up, shaking off the conversation. It wasn't for her. It couldn't be.

Back inside, her father sat hunched over his secondhand laptop, his glasses slipping down his nose as he scrolled through job listings. Her mother was already asleep on the couch, the stress of the day weighing heavy on her.

Emery picked up her phone, intending to check her notifications-but then she saw it.

"Congratulations! You have been awarded the full academic scholarship to Blackwood University."

Her stomach flipped. Blackwood. The best university in the country. A place for the elite, the powerful. And somehow, she had made it in.

A smile broke through her usual exhaustion, but then reality hit just as fast. A scholarship covered tuition, but not food. Not books. Not survival.

Her screen lit up with a new message. Lena: "Just think about it."

Emery exhaled, staring at the Sign Up button.

Maybe, just maybe, this was her way out.
