Chapter 1
Sapphire POV
I stared blankly at the divorce papers in front of me, the words blurring together as tears pricked at the corners of my eyes. Three years of my life, three years of loving him unconditionally, and it all came down to this.
He stood beside me, his eyes cold and detached, as if I was nothing more than a business deal gone sour. And in a way, that's exactly what I was. A means to an end. A stepping stone to his success.
"Sign it," he said, his voice firm but devoid of emotion.
I gazed at the divorce papers, a painful smile spreading across my face. My fists clenched, the skin already tender from the constant pinching.
"I'm not going to do it, You can't get rid of me, Ethan." I said my voice frim
Ethan's glare sent shivers down my spine, but I stood my ground. "You'd be nothing without me," I continued, my words spilling out in a rush.
"I used my father's company to help you rise to the top. You owe me everything. I...I am the one who made you become who you're!"
Ethan's expression darkened, his jaw clenched. Suddenly, he grabbed my neck, slamming me against the wall.
"Why do you always make things hard for me?" he snarled. "Just sign it, if you know what's good for you."
My face reddened, but I managed to smile, my eyes locked on his. "You're angry because you know I'm not lying," I whispered, my voice defiant. "Get your hands off me, you bastard."
Ethan's eyes widened, and he threw me away, sending me crashing to the floor.
My head spinning as I struggled to catch my breath. Ethan's grip on my neck had been suffocating, and I could feel the bruises already forming.
As I coughed and held my chest, he smirked and came closer to me grabbing my hair, and I winced in pain.
"Ahhh!!"
"Yeah, I know you helped me become who I am today," he sneered, his breath hot against my ear. "There's no denying that, Sapphire...thank you for that."
I glared up at him, my eyes blazing with anger. "Shut your trap and let go of me," I spat through gritted teeth. "I'll tell my father everything. I'll make sure you pay for hurting me like this."
Ethan pulled my hair even more making me yelp. "Oh yeah?" he taunted. "There's nothing you or that old man can do to me again, bitch."
He let me go, and I scrambled to my feet, my heart racing with fury. "I endured so much in this stupid marriage just to get to where I am today," he sneered. "You have no idea how much you disgust me, Sapphire...you were just a spoiled rich brat who'd do anything to get what you want."
I felt tears pricking at the corners of my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. "But I loved you," I whispered, my voice cracking. "Why do you hate me so much? If you never loved me, then why did you even marry me, you bastard!!"
Ethan's smirk grew wider. "What? Have you forgotten? You forced me to marry you, remember?"
I shook my head, confusion and anger swirling inside me. "No, that's not true."
" You knew I was in love with someone else, but you made us separate because of your selfish desires." He said again
" No I never did that I..."
"What are you talking about, Sapphire? You were the one who told my dad about marrying me."
I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. "You lied to me," I whispered. "You told me you were over Rachel." I said and his eyes glinted with amusement.
"What else would I have said, when you already told my dad about marrying me? It's over, I've gotten what I want, so there's no use for you anymore."
Just then, a woman walked into the room, her body hug dress clinging to her curves. She smirked at me, her eyes flashing with triumph.
"Hey, babe," she cooed, sauntering over to Ethan. "I'm here."
Ethan's eyes flicked to her, and he smiled, his arm wrapping around her waist. "Hey, beautiful. I've just been taking care of some business."
I felt a wave of nausea wash over me as I watched them. Rachel. Ethan's ex-girlfriend. The woman he'd supposedly broken up with before marrying me, plus... she's also my best friend, well at least I thought she was.
I glared at Ethan and Rachel, disgust and anger burning inside me. They seemed to be enjoying my pain, and Ethan even had the audacity to kiss her right in front of me.
Rachel smirked at me, her eyes gleaming with triumph. "What are you waiting for? Don't stress us anymore and sign the papers, Sapphire."
I took a step forward, my fists clenched. "You two-faced bitch...you pretended to be my friend, but seduced my husband when I wasn't looking!!"
I was still talking when she slapped me hard across the face. I felt a searing pain, and my lip began to bleed.
I held my cheek, my eyes widening in shock. Rachel's eyes flashed with anger.
"Still think you're so important? You were the one who stole him from me. Don't you ever forget that."
She catwalked over to Ethan, touching his face with a possessive smile. "Just leave us be, Sapphire...let us be happy. Just go and die, okay" She said her laughter was like a knife twisting in my gut. I felt a surge of anger and desperation.
"If you think I'll sign those papers so you can take half of my wealth, then you're just joking!!"
Rachel's smile faltered for a moment, before she pulled out a paper from her pocket and threw it at me. I bent down to pick it up, my heart racing with a sense of foreboding.
As I read the paper, my face turned white. "What...what is this?"
Rachel's smirk returned, and she grabbed Ethan's hand. "I know you can read, Sapphire. It's clearly stated there...I'm one month pregnant."
My mouth opened in shock, but no words came out.
Rachel's laughter echoed in my ears as she and Ethan walked away, hand in hand. "Come, babe...let's go tell your dad the good news. I'm sure he'd be thrilled to hear that he's going to be a grandfather."
As they left, I felt my legs give way beneath me. I fell to my knees, my world shattered into a million pieces.
