Chapter 1 The Weight of Ancestry

Long before the dawn of modern civilization, when the world was still steeped in mystery and magic, our ancestors held fast to their beliefs in fortune-telling, witchcraft, and curses. These practices were deadly, mysterious, and often fearsome, their roots entwined with the very essence of the human experience. Italy, a land of scenic beauty and ancient traditions, was no exception. Jutting deep into the Mediterranean Sea, this country, shaped like a boot, was home to the Alps, some of the world's most rugged mountains. It was also a stronghold for one of the world's largest religions.

Yet, amidst its pious fervor, there thrived a clandestine culture of the occult.

In present-day Italy, in a quaint town nestled near the Alps, lived Calliope De Luca. At eighteen, she appeared to be a typical high-school student. Her black hair framed a face of ethereal beauty, but her striking looks were overshadowed by her habit of avoiding physical contact. Calliope's lineage was one of powerful fortune-tellers and witches, a heritage she neither celebrated nor wanted. To her, it was a burden, a punishment for the deeds of her ancestors.

Calliope's ability to see the future through touch had alienated her from her peers. She wore gloves even in the warmest weather, not out of fashion but necessity. Each accidental brush of skin to skin bombarded her with visions of destinies, both mundane and monumental. She knew how to curse those she despised, but this dark gift remained under lock and key, used only in the direst of circumstances. Her abilities were a constant reminder of her ancestors' sins, and she lived in fear of the day they might consume her.

The sun set over the picturesque town, casting long shadows over the cobblestone streets. Calliope walked home from school, her steps echoing in the quiet evening. She enjoyed this time, the brief moments of peace before the visions would overwhelm her again. As she turned a corner, she saw an old woman struggling with her groceries. With a sigh, Calliope approached, her gloved hands reaching out to help.

"Thank you, dear," the woman said, her voice raspy but warm. "You're a kind soul."

Calliope forced a smile, careful not to make contact. "It's no trouble at all."

As she helped the woman, a strange feeling washed over her. A chill ran down her spine, and she glanced around, sensing eyes upon her. The streets were empty, but the feeling persisted. She quickly finished helping the woman and hurried home, the eerie sensation clinging to her like a shroud.

That night, Calliope couldn't shake the unease. She sat by her window, staring out at the moonlit landscape. Her thoughts drifted to her abilities, the curse of her lineage. She had always seen them as a punishment, but now she wondered if they were also a responsibility. She had the power to see the future and to curse. Perhaps, she mused, there was a reason she was born with these gifts.

Her reverie was interrupted by a knock on her bedroom door. Her mother entered, her expression concerned. "Calliope, are you alright?"

Calliope nodded. "Just thinking, Mama."

Her mother sat beside her, taking her gloved hand. "You carry a heavy burden, my dear. But remember, you are stronger than you think. Our ancestors may have used their powers for ill, but you can choose a different path."

Calliope looked at her mother, finding comfort in her words. "I hope so, Mama. I truly hope so."

As the night deepened, Calliope made a silent vow to herself. She would find a way to use her abilities for good, to atone for her ancestors' sins. But she also knew that the path ahead would be fraught with danger and darkness. The weight of her ancestry was heavy, but she was determined to bear it with courage and grace.

Little did she know, her journey was about to begin. A journey that would test her strength, her resolve, and her very soul. The shadows of the past were closing in, and soon, Calliope would be forced to confront the full extent of her heritage.

In the village nestled near the Alps, no one knew the truth about Calliope De Luca and her family. They were descendants of a powerful lineage of fortune-tellers and witches, but they worked hard to blend in, keeping their secrets hidden. Their life was simple; they lived in a quaint cottage with few material possessions. Calliope's mother was a housewife, her father a skilled carpenter, and Calliope herself was just a student.

Despite their efforts to maintain a normal facade, Calliope's life was far from easy. School was a nightmare. Her striking beauty drew attention, but she rebuffed every advance, knowing that any close contact could reveal her secret. She lived in constant fear of her abilities being exposed.

One night, as the village slumbered under a blanket of stars, a sinister plot unfolded. Unbeknownst to Calliope and her parents, their identity had been compromised. A certain individual, suspicious of the De Lucas' odd behavior, had conducted a covert investigation. The whispers of their heritage spread like wildfire through the village.

The night was shattered by the sound of angry voices. A mob had gathered outside their cottage, torches in hand, shouting for the De Lucas to leave the village. Fear and hatred twisted their faces as they demanded the family be cast out.

Calliope's heart pounded in her chest as the reality of their situation sank in. Her father tried to reason with the crowd, but their fury was unrelenting. Torches were thrown, and the wooden walls of their home quickly ignited. Flames roared, devouring the cottage with a ferocious appetite.

"Calliope, run!" her mother screamed, her voice barely audible over the crackling inferno. "Run and never return!"

Tears streaming down her face, Calliope obeyed her parents' last desperate plea. She fled into the night, the flames of her home lighting her path. She heard her parents' screams, their cries of pain and anguish, and it tore her heart apart. She wanted to turn back, to save them, but she knew it was too late.

Her parents' final words echoed in her mind: "Go to the city. Hide your identity. Survive."

With every step, Calliope's sorrow deepened. She ran until her legs could carry her no further, collapsing on the forest floor. The cold night air bit at her skin, but she barely noticed. Her sobs wracked her body as she mourned the loss of her family and the life she had known.

She stayed there until dawn, the events of the night replaying in her mind. She was alone now, her family gone, her home destroyed. But as the first rays of sunlight pierced the canopy of trees above, Calliope felt a spark of determination ignite within her. She would honor her parents' last wish. She would go to the city, hide her identity, and survive.

With a heavy heart but a fierce resolve, Calliope rose to her feet. She brushed away her tears and set off towards the city, leaving behind the village and the memories of a life that could never be reclaimed. The path ahead was uncertain, fraught with danger and hardship, but she was determined to forge her own destiny. The weight of her ancestry was heavy, but it was also a source of strength. And she would need every ounce of that strength for the journey ahead.
