Chapter 1 AM I THE SUSPECT

"What?!" Becky exclaimed. "This can't be, I'm dreaming, this has to be a fucking dream, I have to be dreaming."

"How did this happen?!" Samantha yelled at the driver.

"Ma'am, I honestly don't know. I stayed at my usual post until it was time to take Mr. Forger home, but he never showed up. So, I went to his office to check on him, and when I did..."

"Shut up! Just shut up!" Samantha yelled.

"You were at your usual post, and you didn't notice when someone went into their office and came out?" Samantha said.

"Ma'am, I can assure you that nobody went in and out of his office. Please believe me," the driver said.

"Then explain what I'm seeing on this fucking screen! Where is my goddam father!" Becky yelled.

"Ma'am..."

"What's going on here?" Lydia interrupted, but as she took a watch at the TV, she understood. "What am I watching?"

"You are watching the incompetence of the fucking bastard," Samantha said.

"No no no, no no... My husband cannot be..."

"Well, he is already, Mother, and this idiot cannot explain what happened," Samantha yelled.

"Ma'am, I can assure you that no one went into that office after you did," he defended.

"So, you're saying that I'm a suspect," Samantha raged.

"No... Not at all. I heard his voice hours after you left, so it couldn't be you," he said.

"What of the camera footage... What happened to the footage?" Becky asked, tears flowing down her cheeks. "ANSWER ME!!!"

"The camera footage shows no evidence of anyone entering his office, so we can't get any information from that too," he said.

"So you waited this long to inform us... We could have at least done something... Maybe... Just maybe..." Lydia sobbed.

Becky was speechless, she didn't know what emotion suited this situation best. She just stood there staring at the TV screen with tears rolling down her cheeks profusely.

"I can't believe this... This must be a dream... I must be dreaming," Samantha said, tears rolling down her cheeks.

Everyone sat there, staring at the screen, speechless, tears rolling down their cheeks. None of the maids or guards who had come to the scene dared to speak. Furthermore, they all stood there and watched, either covering their mouth with their hands or putting their hands on their heads.

"So this is it... Is this how life has decided to treat me?" Becky said, her voice filled with grief.

Samantha hugged Becky in an attempt to console her, but Becky refused to be consoled.

"Don't even think about giving me one of your fancy emotional talks," Becky said. "It's obvious life hates me, and it's obvious happiness is far from my reach," Becky complained.

"I'm speechless to Becky... If I'd see someone who would give me a motivational speech, I'd be less grieved than I am now," Samantha said. "However, look at Mother, she hasn't said a word... Let's be..."

"Strong? Is that what you wanted to say? So, if we are strong for her, then who'll be strong for us?" Becky sobbed.

"Exactly... If we are strong for her, she can be strong for us," Samantha said.

"You never cease to amaze me, Sam... You managed to stay positive even in such a situation," Becky said. "Sadly, you don't understand the kind of grief I feel now."

"I do..."

"No, you don't," Becky interrupted. "No one does. All my life, I thought I wouldn't feel the loneliness that comes with living without a mother, but I did, and the only reason I didn't fall into depression was because your mother stood in the gap."

"Exactly.... And now she is more than ready to continue with that task," Samantha said.

"Pfft... Even my father and your mother couldn't fill in that gap... How does your mother intend to do it alone?" Becky said. "Besides, have you looked at your mother? She is devastated."

"That's why I want us to be strong for her... I believe something can still be done for Father," Samantha said.

"Done? Are you trying to be positive, or are you just mocking me?" Becky said.

"No... I didn't mean it that way. What I meant to say was..."

"Please I just want to be by myself," Becky said and ran off to her room.

Becky lay on her bed, sobbing bitterly. Her mind raced back to all the fun times she had with her father. Though her mother died at birth, her father didn't want her to grow up with the pain of not having a mother, so he tried to fill in that position, but he wasn't enough.

All this while, James Forger tried his best to be the best father to his daughter, but it wasn't enough. No matter how hard he tried, at one point or the other, Becky still felt like there was something, or rather, someone missing in her life. Furthermore, Becky's dreams only made things worse. She constantly told her father about the dreams of her mother she had been having.

James always found it strange because she never saw her mother, but she managed to have dreams of her.

Knock! Knock!

"Go away!" Becky yelled.

"Becky.... Please open the door... Let's talk," Samantha said. "All you'll do is hurt yourself."

"Please go.... I don't want to talk about this," Becky said. "It's obvious my life is ruined."

"Please don't talk like that," Samantha said. "You have me... You have Mother."

"And what of Father? What of Father?" Becky said, still sobbing.

"I'm sure he'll be..."

"Just stop it.... You saw the news, so unless the reporters are lying, and the driver is lying, it's obvious...... Oh, God! Why is my life like this?" Becky sobbed.

"Becky, I'm your best friend and sister, I'm here for you always," Samantha said.

"I know you are.... And I know you always will, but... The pain in my heart is too much for me to bear, yet I'm too scared to share it with anyone," Becky said.

Back in the living room, tears flowed down Lydia's eyes as she repeatedly read the news headlines in her head.

On the headlines was boldly written...
