Chapter 1 The job interview.

CHAPTER ONE

The rowdy and traffic jammed streets of Lagos State, Nigeria has for the umpteenth time almost cost me a job interview. I was determined to meet up with time so that I would probably get the job. Meanwhile, I am Anna Daniels, a first class graduate of law from the prestigious University of Lagos. I recently relocated to the city area because the city because we lacked most basic amenities over there but at least, it was serene and very quiet.

I was already very furious inside the Uber as I was almost two hours late behind the scheduled time. The Uber driver could feel my uneasiness and he tried to inquire.

"Are you okay ma'am?"

I wasn't ready for any conversation at the instant so, I just replied him coldly because I wasn't interested in the discussion. I prayed in my heart that I won't loose this job opportunity as a result of the bad road network.

I breathe a sigh of relief as we finally approached the second street downtown that leads to the venue I was headed. Just out of the blues, a car almost ran into us as a result of the recklessness of the driver. He was on a phone call while driving and that almost cost an accident. I shouted furiously at him.

"Hello Mr Man, you almost ran into our car as a result of your ignorant attitude, next time I hope you do better than making a phone call while driving."

I was even more frustrated that instead of getting an apology from the defaulter, I got a smile from the said man. It was confusing to me because it was common for most Nigerian men to flare up and abuse me verbally but needless to say, he acted very matured.

"Sorry ma'am, I didn't mean to.."

I didn't let him finish what he had to say because I cut him shut abruptly.

"Save your explanations to yourself Mr. Learn to be more courteous next time. Meanwhile, driver move this car."

I knew that I had embarrassed the man big time as he sat in his car obviously dumbfounded but I didn't care. All that mattered to me was getting to the place before the interview begins.

I had gotten to the federal office building scheduled for the interview and I was surprised with the turn up of applicants. The number of supposed applicants were so much. I was almost the hundredth person and I obviously lost hope of getting the contract or even getting interviewed the same day. I greeted the receptionist humbly which she returned with a smile and she offered me a seat at the far end of the waiting hall.

It had always been my dream since childhood to be a great and influential lawyer but being born a girl child into the ghetto was almost a hindrance and obstacle. I gave all my best to pursue my academics and luckily, I graduated not just with first class but also as the best graduating student.

After I was publicly disowned by my father because I wanted to move to the city and practice my profession against his approval, I vowed to work my way into living the best life I wanted as a lawyer. It was the realization of a new dawn for me immediately I found out that the federal government was looking for new and experienced lawyers.

I was drawn deeply into my world of thoughts when I felt a gentle tap on my shoulder. It was the lady behind me, she tapped me to inform me that Attorney general of the country was present to carefully pick the suitable applicants himself.

I couldn't see his face but I saw his back because he had already stepped into the elevator. The office messenger soon came downstairs and informed us that the interview had begun in earnest and we should prepare ourselves.

I knew that I had great oratory skills but I hadn't ever faced such official interview that had the capacity of defining my life. There and then, I began to feel tensed and uneasy. I couldn't really tell why I felt that way but I did my best to compose myself in readiness and anticipation of whenever I'm called in for the interview.

The waiting hall had become so quiet because few of the applicants had gone in and they weren't smiling. It was also obvious that they were asked not to mention anything about the interview to anyone. I jolted back to reality after I felt a gentle tap at my back by the receptionist that had welcomed me initially.

"I hope you're okay ma'am?" She asked me courteously.

"Yes, I am. It's just that I feel nervous about everything and I just hope I get this job because right now, it means the whole world to me."

Everywhere was already very quiet and I felt that I had spoken more than necessary. It was as if the receptionist had read my mind immediately as she immediately spoke soothingly to me.

"You don't need to be scared ma'am, you're beautiful and brainy too. Your curriculum vitae has put you in place already, I wish you success."

Her words were so sweet. They were exactly what I needed to hear at the instant to keep my morale and confidence boosted. I slowly regained my composure back and I began imagining what I was going to do the moment I am offered the job.

The swift breeze of tension could be felt in all corner of the gigantic room, the echo from the heartbeats of my fellow applicants sounded like thunderbolts, ready to strike at anytime. Needless to be told, we all were visibly scared and I could tell that they were praying in their minds to their God or gods.

The sudden change of events came immediately my name was called unexpectedly. I stared in awe because it was like a miracle had happened. I became extremely confused and even more terrified.

"What if I didn't meet up to their standards? What if they had called me to ask me to leave the office complex?"

I had a thousand and one thought going through my head. Soon, I heard my name being mentioned again this time, very audible.

"Anna Daniels!! Please, come forward with your credentials."

The inaudible murmur and side talk from most of the applicants had gotten to me. Most of them felt like it was nepotism and extreme favouritism that was at work. I felt bad too because I would have felt the same way if I was in their shoe obviously.

I picked up my handbag, adjusted my dress and walked behind the receptionist who led the way. She gave me a reassuring smile while we walked down the hall way. The hall is very enormous and gigantic. Soon, we stepped into the elevator that led us directly to the room beside the attorney general's office.

While I stepped into the office, the receptionist stopped by the door, hugged me and reassured me of getting the contract. As I entered the office, I got the shock of my life.
