Mara was given away without her consent by her father to Edward who claimed to help resolve the issue going on with her father's company on that condition. Although it was not what she wanted, she eventually woke up at Edward's house where she realised she would be for the rest of her life. There she met Page who was a maid and became her friend and it became complicated when Fred, Edward's brother came to town and visited. He was kind and different from his brother, and Mara was smitten by him. It turns out that Fred had eyes for her and decided to stay longer than he had planned just to have a thing with Mara. What if Edward finds out? Considering his wild attitude, what would become of their little secret? But Edward had his little secret too that had discovered when a trivial accident occurred, what was the little secret?
Mara's father sat in his office, his head faced to the ceiling. His thoughts were vague, helpless at how the event in his company was turning out. When he had started the company, he hadn't thought that one day it would go bankrupt and his life would be threatened with jail as the investors were starting to squeeze at his throat and he had no way forward he could run. He had asked for patience numerous times and failed the number of times he had promised, now he had done what he never thought he would do.
His eyes watered as the thought came reeling in his head, he had done a wrong thing for the sake of his company. He had betrayed his own daughter. Edward Reynolds! Reynolds! The name beckoned in his head. "Urg...!" He scoffed and slid the papers on his desk away in anger. He had considered Edward as an enemy of his company. Long ago Edward had come offering to buy his company, but he had turned him down. He hated the way he had walked into his office that day and sat without him offering the courtesy. He remembered how he had crossed his legs on his desk, staring at his face like he owned everything. Edward was richer obviously, but he was older and it was territory, so he turned down the preposterous idea Edward had brought to his table. He even allowed him a taste of molestation from his securities as they dragged him out of the company's door forcefully. But who would have thought that man would be his only redemption from his verge of bankruptcy. He had no other options but to seek his help for the company's sake. It was like a game on Edwards palm, because he saw an opportunity for his vengeance. He had offered to take what was most precious to him as a return for his help, his daughter's hand in marriage. At first Mara's father had left his presence flaring that he would never give his daughter up to the likes of him but after some days, he had shamefully gone back with his own feets and begged to take his proposal. Edward was keen and he never let a slight opportunity slip from his finger. He had smacked and opted his conditions, his daughter's hand in marriage and to take command of the whole company with Mara's father answering alternatively to him. Mara's father had no choice, how it had come to this. He had agreed and he looked more pathetic than ever. He hasn't told his daughter about it, how would he tell her? He thought. He picked up the papers that had littered the ground of his office, they were the paperworks about to be handed over to Edward. He slid his hands through his hair and stood at the spot akimbo, and momentarily he paced about the room in deep thoughts. He picked his phone on the desk and dialled his daughter. "Mara!" He said unwittingly when her voice came through the phone. "Father...!" She called with concern. First, she noticed the coldness in his voice and second, it was the first time he ever called at work. "Mara," he said again and surrendered to the resolve of telling her on the phone better than telling her in person. There was silence for a while and it made the hairs on her body stand guard. "Father! Is everything ok?" She asked with falter in her voice. "Yeah! Yeah!" He replied. He admitted that he could not bring himself to tell her. But she was not the type to back down in any circumstance. She pestered. "Father...!" He forcefully swallowed a bile in his throat and tears formed in his eyes although she could not see it. "It is terrible!" His voice trembled. "What is father?" She asked, more scared than before. "I am terrible!" He said. "What has happened, father?" She inquired. "I did something terrible, I pawned you away." It was not clear to her what he had meant, "Wha.... What do you mean you pawn me away? Father!" She tried to understand but he would stop his sobbing and reply to her. It was stirring up anger inside her. "Father!" She shouted unconsciously. He sniffed, "I am sorry! I am so sorry! I accept someone's proposal to take your hand in marriage, his name is Edward." He said and wished he hadn't. she flared instantly. "What! What is the meaning of this?" "That was the only way. The company was about to crumble, the investors were asking for their investment and I had nothing to bring to the table. I could go to jail. A lifetime, my lifetime, In jail. I had no choice but to sort him out, Edward and he asked for your hand in marriage in return for his assistance." "You didn't think I should be told before you made such a decision, father?" She asked and he could hear the disdain in her voice. "I... I..." "No!" She cut him off before he could make another excuse. "Do you not know it is my life, my life only and you pawned it away! I am not going to marry him!" "Please Mara, I have lived for you all these years, do you not think you could save your father just this once?" "Once?" She scoffed and cut the call. "Right! I expected nothing less." He said to himself, dropped his phone and ran both his hands through his hair. He clinged to his head so tightly that it seemed like it hurt. It truly hurts and he could not take anymore of the headache he was having. He was sorry that his daughter was caught up in his predicament, because agreeing to the conditions, he knew he was taking away every ounce of joy from his daughter. He knew Edward is someone that cannot love by her side, someone his daughter cannot have a sustainable future with.
