Chapter One: Family

Zoey Cruz is a young ambitious lady of twenty two, trying to make ends meet. She is a graduate of the state university which she saw herself through, and she currently has a legit job now.

She lives with her mother and younger sister Emily who was nineteen years old. She loves and caters for so them much, but the energy wasn’t the same from the other angle. Emily and her mother hated Zoey so much and treats her wrongly for some certain reasons, but zoey simply ignores all of this and showers them with love regardless.

Emily and her mother both worked in a brothel named 247. Emily worked there as both a prostitute and a stripper, while her mom worked as an assistant manger. But Zoey wasn’t involved, she worked at a small office as a personal assistant, and she was happy with her job as she lived off the little she made from there.

This was one of the reasons they hated her, coz she doesn’t do what they do.

Xavier Nicole on the other hand was a handsome young man of twenty four. Xavier is the son of the well known business tycoon, Mr Norman Nicole. Xavier was the eldest, he had two younger sisters Yolanda and Winifred.

Xavier lived recklessly, and behaves anyhow he wants. Although he was an Intelligent child, and could focus solely on business if he wants to, but he didn’t want to. He went about drinking, smoking, living extravagantly. He had sex on a daily basis, with random women, and he never fucks the same lady twice.

Mr Nicole was tired of his son’s attitude, and he was already suffering from high blood pressure due to Xavier’s case. But Xavier would not just change, he still remained the same.

“Mom please, I’m off to work I don’t have time for this, I’m running late” Zoey complained as she walked out from the bedroom to the sitting room, with her handbag hung around her right shoulder.

She was fully prepared for work that morning, but as usual, she had a hindrance and could not go. Her mom has started again.

Sharon was complaining about the house being totally empty with no foodstuffs at home, and was asking that Zoey gives her money to get them and fill up the house. But Zoey was telling her that she doesn’t have any on her, but Sharon would not just listen.

“Mom I have told you before that I have no money on me, I’m totally broke, I’m penniless” Zoey said tiredly.

“So how then do you expect us to feed in this house?” Her mom asked in sarcasm.

“But mom I gave you some money to stock up the house just last week, it’s barely been a week. Is the money finished so quickly?” Zoey asked, earning an unfriendly glare from her mom.

“Can you listen to yourself Zoey? You gave me some money last week, and so? Is the money you gave me unlimited, so it is not supposed to get exhausted, is that what you’re telling me?” Sharon fired.

“Last week is like a very long time ago, and obviously the money is exhausted. It’s a new week, and as you can see the house is empty, we need food!” Sharon added, in a very rude manner.

“But mom the money is still too early, the money I gave you last week should be able to cover for at least two weeks. And besides, I didn’t really see much foodstuffs last week, so how I’m I even sure you really stocked up the house?” Zoey questioned.

“And what’s the supposed to mean, are you calling mom a liar?” Emily her younger sister emerged from the bedroom, and chipped into the conversation.

Emily was putting on a skimpy dress, that reveled all sensitive parts of her body. That was the dress she wore to the brothel last night, and she’s been sleeping all morning while Zoey was getting ready for work.

Guess their argument woke her up, and she’s here to spit whatever comes out of her mouth. Emily is such a disrespectful girl.

“Huh” Zoey hummed, turning to Emily in response to the comment she just made.

“What do you mean by that Emily?” She asked.

“You heard me right, I’m sure you understand English. After all you’re the only graduate in our midst” Emily huffed rudely.

“And who said I am calling mom a liar. I only reminded her in case she’s forgotten, that I gave her some money last week. So I see no reason for that comment you just made, it’s of no relevance” Zoey replied her.

“But it’s not far from the truth” Sharon came in again.

“You’re indirectly calling me a liar and even accusing me of theft, by asking me to give account of the small amount you gave me since last week” she added.

“Mom why are you sounding like this? I didn’t mean it that way, and you know it” Zoey said softly.

“Oh really! So how do you mean it then? Asking me to give account of the money, how do you mean it?” Sharon asked aggressively.

“You know what mom, just let it be” Zoey sighed tiredly, coz she knew there was no way she’ll explain this and they’ll understand. She just have to end this discussion before it graduates into a fight.

Zoey exhaled deeply, and then dipped her hand into her mini hand bag. She brought out an amount and handed it to her mother who collected it rudely, glaring hardly at her.

“Thought you said you had no money on you, where did this come from?” Her mom inquired, giving her a wrong look.

“So what was the need of all the fighting and argument, why didn’t you simply give mom the money when she asked for it in the first place? Must you always make trouble all the time before releasing money? You never like a peaceful atmosphere, stingy girl” Emily attacked rudely.

Zoey just looked at her and shook her head. What they didn’t know is that what she just handed them is her allowance for this week’s feeding and transportation, and as it stands now, she has no idea how she’s gonna feed, or even get to work this week, starting from today.

She just had to give them that money in order for peace to reign. And she also didn’t want them to starve, she wanted them to be satisfied.

This is one outstanding quality of Zoey’s, she always wanted everyone around her to be okay. And she loves her mother and sister so much, they were the only family she had. So if she doesn’t take care of them, who will?

“So mom can I go now?” Zoey asked in a low tone, trying to avoid trouble.

“Of course you can leave now, I have no use for you. And oh, a quick reminder. Our house rent expires in a few days, and I’ll appreciate it if you renew it on time this time around to avoid insults from the landlord” Sharon said casually.

Hearing this, Zoey closed her eyes and sighed deeply. This period is just so rough for her, she prays she scales through.

“I have heard you mom. Bye, see you in the evening” she said cheerfully.

“Yeah bye” her mom waved carelessly. And with that, she walked out of the house. She doesn’t even know how she’ll get to work today.

“How much did she give you?” Emily asked immediately Zoey left, standing up from where she sat.

“Well not much, buts it’s okay” Sharon shrugged.

“Is it enough to get the purple dress I asked for?” Emily asked, walking up to her.

“Emily!” Her mom called out.

“What? I wanna know if it’s enough for the dress” she shrugged.

“You must be really stupid to ask that Emily. You know very well that there’s no foodstuff in the house, no groceries, nothing! The money Zoey gave me last week, I used it in getting those pair of shoe that you asked for. Now if I use this money in getting you a dress, how would we feed?” Sharon asked aggressively, feeling annoyed already.

“You ask for another mom, I need that dress” she replied quickly.

“And what makes you think she’ll provide the money?”

“She will mom, she always does”

“And what if she doesn’t? You think Zoey is a fool” Sharon huffed.

“Then that’s not a problem. If she doesn’t then you do, at least take that responsibility as a mother. You work and get paid, can’t you stock the house?” Emily fired at her mother.

“Oh what about you, don’t you get paid? How about you use your money to get the so called dress you want, what do you use your money for?” Sharon fired back.

“Oh, so that’s what it is now mom, you’re not getting the dress for me?” Emily asked, seriously this time. And seeing her like that, Sharon’s eyes melted.

“Oh alright, I’ll get it for you baby, but just give me some time, give me time baby. You know Zoey just gave me this money, and our rent is due in a week time, we can’t keep milking Zoey like this, I’m afraid she’ll blow up soon”

“You know she’s quiet educated, so we just have to take it easy. Just have patience, I’ll definitely get the money from her and buy you the dress” Sharon assured her daughter lovingly.

“But mom I planned on wearing that dress to the brothel this night, what I’m I gonna wear now?” Emily complained.

“You know what? Just get dressed, I’ll get you a lower budget one at the town mall, just for tonight. I’ll definitely get you the dress you want, you can always wear it some other time” Sharon pleaded with her daughter, but Emily just remained silent without saying anything.

“Baby please, just give your mother time” Sharon nudged.

“I have heard you mom, but I just want you to Know that I am not happy with this arrangement, I needed that gown urgently” Emily muttered.

“It’s okay baby, when we get to the mall you’ll see more prettier ones” Sharon cooed.

“Just go get dressed, I’ll treat you to lunch” she added.

“Okay mom, I’ll be back soon” Emily said with a small smile, and then walked into the room. While Sharon just watched her daughter, smiling sheepishly as she did. Emily is her favorite child.
