Chapter 1 Dr. Hendrix

“Oh, god. Look! I passed the entrance exam!” Proudly screamed by the girl beside me. I tendly squeezed my eye searching for my name on the bulletin board.

My hands were trembling and sweating, not to mention my armpit too. “Please. Please. Just this wish. Give me hope.” Make me not worry this much. I will grant my father’s dream no matter what happen.

“Girl!” I flinched when Victoria, my friend hugged me at the back. I smiled a little to accomodate her vibe, “Yes? Hi!” “Hey! You.”

She poked my waist which made me cutely chuckled. “Stop that. What are you doing?” I asked refraining to laugh out loud. “You better make me believe, squirrel.” I frowned, “What? Believe of what?” My eyes widen when she suddenly pulled my arm and dragged me with her on the other side with pasted papers on bulletin board. There are hundreds of names on the list. Just then, when I saw a highlight of my name, my hand shaken and tears started to fell on my cheecks. “Papa.” Papa, this is it. 137 Dahlia Anton - BS in Nursing “I-I am so—“ I didn’t finish the word I desired to express, instead I hugged Victoria with so much contentment and excitement. “You’re such a cry baby.” She caressed my back making sure her comfort surrounds me. “Who would’ve even thought when I am not even good at math.” Said by me. Victoria pinched my nose, “Don’t be too harsh to yourself,” and placed a lollipop on my mouth, “If you are meant for that, your heart will work with you.” I smiled, “I love yo—“ “Stop that. You’re too sweet. You could’ve been less for that, I’d be satisfied.” I gestured to zipped my mouth. Before I went home, I dropped to a doughnut store and bought my father a dozen of it, “How much?” “$5.79, Ma’am.” “Alright.” After sending my payment, I carried the box ready to deliver it at home. When I opened the exit door of the store, I saw a man feeding a street cat on the garden. Slowly, my feet walked towards that direction. Taking a few steps, I stopped and listened to what this young man says, “Are you full, baby? I can buy more if you want.” The cat kept on feeding itself while this man tried to interact with her. How cute. I kneel down beside the man and opened my box, “Here.” I picked up one doughnut and gave it to the cat. Along the way, It alarmed me when I sense this man kept on staring at me. Making my periphal vision works, he’s astonishingly an adonis. So did I not hesistate to straightly faced Him. In shocked, my mouth suddenly open in a small gap paired with blushing cheeks, “H-Hi.” I pursed my lips and looked away. Am I even aware that I giggled? He look rich and handsome. That was just a second but was greatly attracted with his effortless seducing looks. The man stood up and walked away so cool. Where is he going? I run to him and blocked his way, “Um, would you like some?” I opened the box of doughnut and showed him what I avail. He looked at my doughnuts before me, my eyes. I do not know but his gaze could travel inside me sending shivers in me. Too mysterious. He was quiet. My eyes laid on his lips which look so pumpy and kissable. I gulped, “Aren’t you hungry?” He didn’t blink. My brows rose when his hand reach out for a doughnut and did not expect what he did. He was about to feed me. “Treat yourself.” He said. I followed, I opened my mouth and took a soft bite. “Mm. It tastes good.” My mouth formed an O when he ate the rest of the portion of doughnut. I pointed his mouth, “Why? It’s mine. I took a bite with that.” “Can’t we share, Miss?” My eyes twinkled and blushed so hard. How can he say it so casual? He turned his back without saying goodbye. It raise my curiousity, what’s his name? I was about to chase Him but was stop by a cat. “Meow.” I sighed and look at the street cat. “A handsome man feed you, hm.” And patted the cat’s head. The next day I enrolled myself in The Royal Melbourne Hospital Campus. I am not rich, but my Uncle forced me to study in such expensive medical school. For short, He is my financer. My papa trusted Him with all our assets, since Papa is busy travelling to write. Yes, my father is a journalist. “Here, Miss. Are there more charges?” I asked the cashier. “Yes, Ma’am. The enrollment fee, please.” After the payment, I took a tour for a while. It’s a huge hospital. It could’ve been more scary, right? Especially at night. I’ve always think of the creepiest things that made me scared about hospitals. Morgue, blood and even injections. You would ask, why would I pursue medical field when I fear such things like that? I wouldn’t then deny that I am here for someone’s dream. My eyes widen when I heard a fragile sound of metals. It’s a medical toos for surgery? I’m not sure. I stopped on the hallway near the nurse station being attentive of the nurse’s duty. They all look so neat and firm with their white uniform. I envy. I frowned when three of the nurses intended to glance at the aged woman nurse pressing numbers on the telephone, “A-23. Dr. Hendrix, your patient, Imelda is here. Lab data: CT and MRI, done.” “3 minutes. Thank you, Miss.” Answered. The three giggled and jokingly spanked each other’s arms. The aged woman slowly rotate her swivel chair towards the nurses, “That’s why Dr. Hendrix does not like young ladies in job because you just fuel him with compliments and flirt at the same time.” “That’s so frank of you. Could’ve been a little bit polite, Madam? Respect in work.” “Respect and do your work, Clarisse, rather than paying attention to my boss the whole day.” Plainly said by the aged woman which led the talk ended. When her chair turned, her brows rose after seeing me. “Girls are stressing me out nowadays.” She looked at me, “Just leave it there when you give something to Dr. Hendrix.” I blinked and checked out the boxes at the side. Gifts? “How sweet of them.” She frowned at me. I raised my hand and shortly wave at her, “I do not even know whose Dr. Hendrix.” Her mouth formed an O making her look surprised, “Great!” She lowly exclaimed, “Great. Just great. That’s so rare to hear.” I nodded and showed her a smile. Her boss seems so popular. Making it easier for her to cool down, I handed her a bar of chocolate, “That could help. Brain’s food is glucose. Chocolate contains it.” She chuckled, “Smart little girl.” She happily reach out for the bar of chocolates, “I’m Bernadeth. 46 year old from Memphis. You? Info.” “Dahlia. I’m 23. Tasmania.” “Oh. The poorest state in Australia.” She said while munching the chocolates. I nodded. Then I continued, “I took a course here. It’s nursing.” “Why nursing?” “Um. Heart of hospitality. Being a support system of someone who is sick. Catchers of those who are lost of hope.” “Ooh. That’s an integral value when you commit duty as nurse. I’m impressed.” Suddenly, a young lady came, “Hi! Excuse me. Where is Dr. Hendrix?” “A present?” Asked by the aged woman. “Ye—just leave it there, please. Thank you so much. Dr. Hendrix is busy caring his patients. For sure, he cannot accomodate you.” “But I want to—these are his appointments,” The nurse showed the list to the lady, “A lot, right?” The young lady was pissed off and left with a face of disappointment. She might’ve bought a special present. I then asked the nurse, “You memorized that script for so long, aren’t you?” “Longer than you thought, my dear.” *TING* Starbucks “I’m hungry.” I whispered to myself. And immediately went to the line. What should I order? Iced White Chocolate Mocha or Vanilla Latte? I play with my fingers. I’m so hungry. “1 Vanilla Latte, please.” While waiting I eavesdrop from the table behind me. They are doctors. “Isn’t it good to have americano in a day and frapuccino at night?” “Yeah. You’d end up stroked. You’ve intake too much of caffeine. Would you like visiting hospitals for check-up? Hassle. And pay hospital bills? I, no money.” My lips formed a smile. Wouldn’t I experienced that kind of conversation too? Being decisive with the coffee every over time in my work with my workmates. That sounds a bit fun. When I got my order, I turned to find a table but did not expect to bump on someone’s coat. My eyes widen when it’s a white coat. This is crazy. It’s a doctor’s coat! My head rose and gulped. He doesn’t look mad but my heart raced so fast. Weird. That gaze was like scanning through my soul. Intense. But he is not furious. “Sorry.” Trembly said. I didn’t bring enough money to pay such coat. Rattled and nervous, I searched for a wet tissue in my bag. “Um. W-wet tissue, helps. Wait. Um.” Where’s my wet tissue? “I’m fine.” Fine? That’s not fine. But when I realized something, my face turned into an old woman who just saw a dead soul. Is this right? I blushed so hard. It’s the man who fed the cat. My eyes travel down to his logo, Dr. Supremo Kiel Hendrix, MD He’s a doctor.
