Behind him, his personal assistant trembled. He held a crumpled note left on the vanity table. Lady Beatrice had fled through the service elevator ten minutes ago. She refused to go through with the transactional marriage.
"The main hall is packed, Mr. Thorne," the assistant whispered, breaking into a cold sweat. "Over two hundred international journalists are here. The board members are seated. And... your father just arrived with your half-brother."
Ethan's jaw clenched. The muscles in his face turned to stone.
Suddenly, the heavy doors of the suite swung open.
"Well, well. Look at the solitary groom," a mocking voice echoed.
Julian Thorne walked in. Right behind him was their father, Arthur Thorne-the ruthless patriarch of the family.
Arthur checked his heavy gold watch. He looked at Ethan with absolute disappointment. "I see the rumors are true, Ethan. Your bride has made a mockery of our family name. She ran away."
Julian smirked, adjusting his lapels. His eyes gleamed with greed. "Don't take it too hard, big brother. If you can't find a girl to slide that ring onto, I'm happy to take your CEO chair."
The room grew heavy with malice.
Ethan didn't shout. He didn't even turn around. Instead, he calmly picked up a silver pocketknife from the vanity table and slowly turned it in his hand. The blade caught the sharp light of the chandelier.
"You know, Julian," Ethan said, his voice dangerously quiet. "The board of directors is meeting on the 44th floor next week. It would be a terrible shame if you had an accident before then. The luxury elevators here can be unpredictable. A snapped cable, a sudden drop, and a man's legs are crushed beyond repair."
Julian's smirk instantly evaporated. He turned pale and took a step back toward the door.
Ethan finally cut his gray eyes over to his half-brother. His gaze cut like ice. "The CEO seat belongs to me. It will always belong to me. Now, get out of my sight."
Arthur frowned, sensing his eldest son was pushed to a dangerous edge. He checked his watch again. "You have exactly fifteen minutes, Ethan. Find a solution, or lose everything."
The heavy doors slammed shut.
Ethan let out a slow, controlled breath. He needed air. His mind calculated every possible move. He refused to lose to his deceitful family.
He stepped out onto the dimly lit terrace backyard of the hotel. He lit a dark Cuban cigar, exhaling a thick cloud of gray smoke. His blood boiled from Julian's arrogance.
Suddenly, a soft whimper hit his ear.
Ethan ignored it at first, assuming it was the wind. But the sound came again-a suffocating sob of pure terror.
Frustrated, Ethan snapped his eyes open. He marched toward the noise, following the sound around a massive pillar.
His footsteps froze.
Huddled against the concrete wall was a girl. She looked impossibly small, like a broken doll discarded in the dark. She wore a pastel pink gown, but the elegant silk was ruined and stained with mud. The dress was slightly torn at the shoulder, exposing a sliver of pale, trembling skin.
She clutched a badly swollen, severely bruised ankle, weeping in raw despair.
Ethan's fury instantly melted. There was something intensely fragile about the way she held herself. It caught him completely off guard.
The sound of his lighter snapping shut echoed sharply in the quiet garden.
The nameless girl gasped. She snapped her head up, her wide blue eyes locking onto the towering figure stepping out from the shadows.
She shrank back against the wall, trembling uncontrollably. She tried to pull the torn fabric over her bare shoulder. "Who... who are you? Please, don't hurt me..."
Ethan didn't answer. He didn't ask why she was hiding in a filthy backyard. Instead, he walked forward until his massive shadow completely consumed her. He reached into his tuxedo pocket and pulled out a heavy velvet jewelry box.
With a smooth flick of his wrist, he opened it, revealing a massive diamond ring. Without a word, he dropped the priceless ring straight into her lap.
She looked at the glittering diamond in utter bewilderment. "What... what is this?"
Ethan leaned down, his face mere inches from hers. His voice cut through the night like ice.
"I don't know why you're crying in a dark alley, and frankly, I don't care," Ethan spoke with unyielding authority. "But I have exactly twelve minutes to find a bride, and you look like you need a miracle. Put on the ring, walk up those stairs, and marry me tonight. In exchange, I will grant you absolute protection, unlimited wealth, and the power to destroy anyone who ever made you cry. Do we have a deal, little one?"
