"Stabbing yourself in the chest just to force my hand... You really are out of your mind," he sneered, looking at the bloody bandages wrapped tightly around my torso. His face was all sharp angles and brutal beauty, twisted in absolute disgust. "Did you think a little blood would make me pity you? I will never accept a wolfless cripple as my Luna."
The shockwave from the blast was still a dull, bone-deep thrum in my marrow when a savage, tearing pain in my chest wrenched me back to the present.
Before I could even process it, a flicker seared across my mind: a face, a voice-my own-saying, I may never be your wife in this life, Alphonso, but I'll be your ghost in the next.
And then, the plunge of a blade into my own heart.
The vision vanished, but the phantom ache in my chest remained-and flared again, hot and fresh, as if the knife had only just been driven home.
The fragmented memories of the original host instantly provided the identity of the threat. This was the man I was bound to. My arranged husband.
He didn't know the woman who loved him was already dead. To him, this was just another one of her dramatic, manipulative stunts.
"Don't bother with your new little tricks, Ariel," he stepped closer, the oppressive, hostile energy rolling off him in waves.
I noticed the subtle shift in his breathing, the tightening of his posture. He was watching me, waiting for me to break down crying, begging for his affection like the old Ariel would have.
My gaze wasn't weak. It wasn't pleading.
It was a flat, cold, analytical stare. The kind I used to pin a target before neutralizing them.
He actually took a half-step back. A flicker of something-surprise? confusion?-crossed his features before being locked down again behind a mask of contempt. He thought this coldness was just a new layer to my act.
My eyes scanned his face, cataloging features, then the heavy, dark wood furniture. Threat assessment complete. Apex predator. Unfavorable terrain. Zero tech support.
My lips were cracked, my throat raw. But in a situation with no backup, seizing the psychological high ground is paramount. I pushed myself up, biting the inside of my cheek until it bled to distract from the agonizing pain in my chest, and steadied myself against the headboard.
My voice was a dry rasp, completely devoid of emotion.
"I think you have the wrong person."
For a moment, he just stared. Then, the contempt on his face curdled into sheer, crackling rage.
"Amnesia now? Is that your next play?" His jaw tightened, a muscle flexing in his cheek. He let out a humorless, ugly laugh. "You schemed, you lied, and you clawed your way to get this marriage. Let me remind you exactly who you are dealing with. I am Alphonso West, the Alpha of the Black Moon Pack. And I don't have time for your manipulative games."
He lunged forward, his large hand clamping around my uninjured wrist like a manacle. A wave of raw power, an almost physical pressure, slammed into me. The sheer dominance of an Alpha.
The grip was bone-crushing, but I didn't flinch. At this momengt,my physical combat skills were all I had left. My free hand moved, not with brute strength, but with speed and precision. My fingers dug viciously into the nerve cluster on the inside of his forearm, a pressure point designed to force an immediate muscle release.
He gasped, his grip loosening instinctively. He hadn't expected physical resistance, much less a calculated, technical counter-attack from a woman he considered a weakling.
I pulled my hand back out of his reach, my expression unchanged.
Before the tension could escalate into a physical brawl, a sharp knock echoed from the heavy bedroom door.
"Alpha," a different male voice called out. "The elders are waiting."
Alphonso straightened up, the storm in his eyes receding behind a wall of ice. He smoothed his shirt, a king reassuming his throne. He gave me one last look-convinced I was still scheming, but harboring a flicker of dangerous curiosity that set every tactical nerve in my body on high alert.
"I know," he called to the man outside. He turned back to me, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "Keep playing these mind games, Ariel. See where it gets you. I don't mind finding a way to make you shut up permanently."
He spun on his heel and strode out of the room, the door clicking shut behind him with a sound of finality.
The oppressive weight of his presence vanished, leaving me alone in the suffocating silence.
I leaned my head back, my ragged breathing the only sound in the room. A fatal stab wound miraculously healing. No chip. An aggressive Alpha husband who thought I was a manipulative liar.
Surviving here, in this strange new reality, with only my bare fists and my brain? That was a losing bet from the start. The deck was stacked against me. But I wasn't out of tricks-not yet. I still had an ace up my sleeve.
