THE WRONG HEIR'S BRIDE Chapter 1 THE BRIDE SWITCH

Amelia Hart had spent the last seven years preparing to become Sebastian Kingston's wife. Every etiquette lesson, every charity gala, every carefully selected university course had been designed with one purpose in mind. One day, she would stand beside the future head of the Kingston dynasty. Tonight was supposed to be the beginning of that future. The ballroom of the Kingston Grand Hotel glittered beneath crystal chandeliers worth more than most homes. Politicians, celebrities, and business magnates filled the vast hall, their voices blending into a sophisticated hum.

Amelia stood near the center of the room, her champagne-colored gown flowing elegantly around her. Cameras flashed from every direction. She should have been happy. Instead, she felt strangely numb. "You look beautiful." Amelia turned to find Sebastian approaching. Dressed in a perfectly tailored black tuxedo, he looked exactly as the media described him. Handsome, refined, and effortlessly charming. The perfect heir. He offered her a practiced smile. "Nervous?" he asked. "A little." "There is no need. Tonight changes everything." Amelia studied him carefully. They had known each other since childhood, yet there was always a distance between them. Their relationship had never been romantic. It was an understanding between two influential families. Duty before feelings. At least, that was what both families believed. Sebastian glanced toward the elevated platform where members of the Kingston family were gathering. "My grandfather will make the official announcement soon," he said. "After that, there is no turning back." Amelia noticed something unusual in his expression. Tension. For the first time, Sebastian seemed uneasy. Before she could ask why, her mother appeared beside her. "Amelia, darling, everyone is waiting." Victoria Hart looked elegant in silver silk, though the anxiety in her eyes was impossible to miss. Their family's financial difficulties were a closely guarded secret. The Hart Group had nearly collapsed three years earlier following a devastating scandal involving Amelia's late father. Only the promise of an alliance with the Kingstons had kept investors from abandoning them completely. This marriage was not merely important. It was essential. "I know, Mother," Amelia said softly. Victoria squeezed her hand. "Everything will finally be alright." Amelia forced herself to smile. If only it were that simple. Because she had not agreed to this marriage solely to save her family. Hidden inside the small evening purse hanging from her wrist was an old flash drive. The last thing her father had given her before he died. For years, she had been unable to access its encrypted contents. Six months ago, she finally succeeded. What she discovered changed everything. Financial records. Private correspondence. Fragments of conversations. Each piece pointed toward a single terrifying possibility. Someone inside the Kingston family had orchestrated her father's downfall. And Amelia intended to uncover the truth. A sudden silence swept through the ballroom. Eighty-year-old Harrison Kingston had stepped onto the stage. The patriarch needed no introduction. He was one of the most powerful men in the world. Even now, age had done little to diminish the authority radiating from him. "Ladies and gentlemen," Harrison began. "Thank you for joining us on this important evening." Polite applause followed. Harrison continued. "For decades, the Kingston family has valued loyalty, legacy, and strength above all else." Amelia exchanged a glance with Sebastian. Everything was proceeding as expected. "Tonight," Harrison said, "I wish to announce the future of the Kingston dynasty." More cameras flashed. Victoria Hart sat straighter. Amelia's heartbeat accelerated. Harrison paused. Then he spoke words that shattered the room. "The arranged marriage between Amelia Hart and Sebastian Kingston has been dissolved." Complete silence. For several seconds, Amelia genuinely believed she had misheard him. Beside her, Sebastian's expression remained unreadable. Whispers erupted across the ballroom. Victoria Hart had gone pale. "What is happening?" she whispered. Harrison raised a hand for silence. "Effective immediately, Amelia Hart will marry my grandson, Adrian Kingston." The world stopped. Amelia stared at the patriarch. No one moved. No one breathed. Then chaos exploded. Journalists began shouting questions. Guests exchanged shocked looks. Several Kingston family members openly protested. "What nonsense is this?" "Father, you cannot be serious." "This is outrageous." Amelia turned sharply toward Sebastian. "You knew." It was not a question. He held her gaze. "Since this morning." A cold sensation spread through her chest. "You knew and said nothing." "There was nothing I could do." Amelia stepped backward. Every carefully constructed plan for her future had collapsed in less than a minute. More importantly, she had never even met Adrian Kingston. Not properly. Everyone knew the stories. The illegitimate grandson. The family disgrace. The son was born to Harrison Kingston's affair decades earlier. After his mother's death, Adrian had been raised within the family but never truly accepted. At twenty-one, he had left. Few people had seen him since. Rumors described him as ruthless, cold, and dangerously ambitious. Some claimed he had built a billion-dollar empire entirely on his own. Others claimed he hated the Kingstons so much that he would destroy them. Amelia had no idea which version was true. "Where is Adrian?" someone demanded. As though summoned by the question, the grand ballroom doors opened. Conversation ceased instantly. A tall man entered. He wore a perfectly tailored dark suit with no tie. His expression was calm, almost detached. Everything about him radiated power. Amelia recognized him immediately from old photographs. Adrian Kingston. He had changed. The awkward young man she vaguely remembered had disappeared. This man looked dangerous. His dark eyes swept across the ballroom before finally settling on Harrison. No emotion crossed his face. He approached the stage slowly. The crowd instinctively moved aside. Even members of the Kingston family seemed uncomfortable in his presence. Harrison regarded him coolly. "You are late." "I did not intend to come," Adrian replied. His voice was deep and controlled. "Yet here you are." "I was curious." Amelia watched the exchange carefully. There was no warmth between them. Only hostility. Harrison gestured toward Amelia. "You will marry Miss Hart next month." For the first time, Adrian looked directly at her. Amelia felt strangely exposed beneath his gaze. He studied her for several long seconds. Then he looked back at Harrison. "No." The single word sent another wave of shock through the room. "You do not refuse me," Harrison said. "I have spent fifteen years refusing you." Tension crackled between them. Harrison's expression hardened. "If you reject this arrangement, you will permanently forfeit all claims to Kingston Holdings." Several guests gasped. Adrian remained silent. Amelia suddenly understood. This was not about marriage. It was about inheritance. Power. Control. Harrison was forcing them both. Adrian finally spoke. "Interesting." His gaze returned to Amelia. This time, there was unmistakable suspicion in his eyes. "You agreed to this?" Amelia straightened. "I learned about it thirty seconds ago." He studied her again. Apparently dissatisfied, he looked away. "I still refuse." Victoria Hart hurried toward Harrison. "Mr. Kingston, please. There must be some misunderstanding." "There is none," Harrison said. "Our agreement with the Hart family remains unchanged." Victoria visibly relaxed. Until Harrison added quietly, "The alliance proceeds only if Amelia marries Adrian." Amelia felt her mother's fingers tighten painfully around her arm. Both women understood exactly what those words meant. Without the Kingston alliance, the Hart family would collapse. They would lose everything. Her mother looked at her desperately. Amelia closed her eyes briefly. She had entered this family seeking answers. Perhaps fate had changed the path. When she opened her eyes again, she looked directly at Adrian. "I accept." Silence fell once more. Adrian stared at her. "Do you?" "Yes." His expression grew colder. "You should reconsider." "Unfortunately, I cannot." Something unreadable flickered across his face. Pity. Contempt. Perhaps both. Without another word, Adrian turned and walked away. Harrison's voice stopped him. "The wedding will take place in four weeks." Adrian paused at the doorway but did not turn around. "Then I suggest you keep your future granddaughter alive until then." The entire ballroom froze. Slowly, Adrian looked over his shoulder. "There was an accident involving my car this morning." A dangerous silence settled over the room. "It appears someone in this family wants me dead." Then he left. Amelia stood motionless as terrified whispers spread throughout the ballroom. Standing near the stage, partially concealed by a marble column, she noticed someone quickly slipping a black leather glove into their pocket. A glove stained with fresh engine oil.
