For three years, I played the perfect, docile wife to Brendon Jimenez, desperate for the real family I never had as an orphan. But during a high-society gala, I peeked through a cracked door and caught him sleeping with my best friend. When I packed my cheap canvas bag to leave the penthouse, my mother-in-law blocked the door. She dumped my clothes on the marble floor, called me a stray dog, and slapped me so hard my mouth bled. Brendon just stood there, watching his mother humiliate me. To keep me trapped as his perfect public prop, he even faked his mother's heart attack in a VIP hospital suite. "Get on your knees. Kneel down right now and beg my mother for forgiveness until she decides to accept it." I gave them my youth and unconditional loyalty, only to realize this prestigious old-money family was nothing but a rotting corpse built on dirty secrets. I didn't cry, and I certainly didn't drop to my knees. Instead, I pulled out my phone right in front of him and called my lawyer. "File for an at-fault divorce. I have proof of his infidelity with Kaelynn Hudson. I want him ruined." Then, I touched the matte black card hidden deep in my clutch. It belonged to Kile Barrett, the ruthless billionaire shark my husband feared most, and I was going to use him to tear the Jimenez family apart.

Betrayed By My Husband, Loved By A Tycoon Chapter 1

Christen Craft hurried to the St. Regis Hotel, where her husband Brendon Jimenez's company was hosting its annual charity gala. She had worked overtime until half an hour ago, slogging through a disastrous contract. She had caught three fatal clauses in it and saved her husband from a potential settlement that could have reached eight figures.

She couldn't wait to tell him in person. But she scanned the ballroom twice and didn't spot Brendon's navy suit. She asked several company employees she knew, and finally a young woman from the branding department told her she had seen Brendon head upstairs a few minutes ago, maybe to take a break.

Unlike the bustle on the first floor, the second floor was silent. Christen walked past closed door after closed door. Her mind was still rehearsing what she would say to her husband. Then she stopped, because she heard a familiar voice coming from room 214.

The door was ajar. The laughter slipping through the crack was her friend Kaelynn Hudson's. Breathless. Wet. She knew Kaelynn was at the gala tonight, but she had never heard that voice sound like this in the three years she had known her.

Christen pushed the door open gently, thinking she would say hello to her friend if she was resting inside. The greeting was on her lips, but it never came out.

What she saw firstly was a burgundy silk dress sprawled across the floor. Kaelynn's dress. The one she had texted Christen a photo of that afternoon, saying how much she wished she could come to the gala. Then Christen saw the watch. Brendon's Rolex Cosmograph, limited edition, the one she had saved up four months' salary to buy for him. Light slid across its face as his hand moved, sliding up the bare curve of Kaelynn's spine. Slow. Practiced. Like he had done it a hundred times before.

"You know, you're really a lot more interesting than that law school nerd I married." Brendon's voice. Low. Warm. Satisfied.

"Am I?" Kaelynn giggled. "You poor thing. Let me make it up to you."

That law school nerd.

Christen stumbled backward two steps.

The contract pages slipped out of her coat pocket. The pages she had carried across half the city to show him. Half an hour ago, she had found the loopholes in that contract and thought she was the smartest person in New York. And her husband was here, betraying her with her best friend, calling her a nerd.

What rushed into her mind faster than anger was the image of herself grinning at her reflection in the taxi window just moments ago. The scenes she had played over and over in her head, how Brendon would look at her, and the celebratory hug she had pictured.

Then the anger came. It was so intense that she had to lock her knees to stay upright. Her nails dug into her palms, almost breaking the skin. She wanted to kick the door open, seize Kaelynn by the hair, and drag her off the rug. She wanted Brendon to kneel in front of her, trembling, and plead for her forgiveness.

But in the end, she did none of those things. Her pride and her dignity would not let her become a screaming mess in some cheap soap opera.

She memorized the room number. She memorized every word he said. She let them sink deep, into the place where she kept all old scores. Then she bent down to pick up the contract, turned, and walked toward the stairs. She told herself she had simply walked into the wrong room. What she needed now was a drink.

Downstairs, at the VIP bar, she ordered a dry martini. Gin dissolving into vermouth. One glass. Two glasses. Her mouth was dry, her hands shaking so badly she needed both to hold the glass.

Four minutes. Maybe five, and Brendon would come downstairs with that post‑sex flush on his face. He would find her, and mumble some flimsy excuse. She desperately needed a plan. She wanted to hurt him. Not a scene. Not tears. She wanted something cleaner. Something that would make him feel it too, for the rest of the night, or maybe for the rest of his life.

The answer sat in a corner booth. A man who looked like he was not to be trifled with.

Everyone else in this room was performing. Men flashing their watches. Women tossing their heads in practiced laughter. The ancient theater of money showing off to money. This man just sat there, one arm resting along the back of the leather booth, an untouched glass of whiskey on the table before him. His gaze wasn't on the crowd. He couldn't have cared less about the noise.

The gin on an empty stomach made Christen's vision drift. She only vaguely registered dark hair, a dark suit, and the kind of broad shoulders that made you look twice.

She thought: Brendon would hate him on sight.

She picked up her glass and crossed the room.

Two men in black suits materialized before she had taken three steps. They said nothing. They simply formed a wall of muscle, immovable and final.

The man in the booth raised one finger. They stepped back.

Christen slid into the booth. The leather was cold through the thin fabric of her dress. Up close, she could smell him. Crushed juniper. Dry‑cleaned wool. She leaned in, the gin burning away what little caution she had left.

"I have a proposition," she said, her lips nearly brushing his ear. "My husband is upstairs, cheating on me with my best friend. Before the divorce, I need a man who can help me pay him back." She pulled back just enough to meet his eyes. "You look like you're in much better shape than he is."

The man turned his face toward her. His eyes were the color of wet slate. He studied her, without surprise.

Then he smiled. It stayed at the corner of his mouth, never reaching his eyes. "Is that so. My pleasure, Miss Christen Craft."

Her name. He knew her name.

The gin, the anger, they vanished in an instant. Her vision finally cleared.

She recognized that face. Forbes covers. Times Square billboards. The profile piece her mother‑in‑law had left on the coffee table last Christmas, placed so Christen would see it the moment she walked in.

Kile Barrett. CEO of East‑Ring Partners. The man who had dismantled three Fortune 500 companies in eighteen months and bought the ruins. Wall Street called him the Vulture. The financial press called him a genius. His rivals made a phone call before making any move that might catch his attention.

Christen opened her mouth. Nothing came out.
