Scorned and Sovereign
On International Women's Day, my husband bought a gold bracelet and a gold pendant. One was for his ex-girlfriend, and the other for her daughter. When I found out, I furiously confronted him, "She has a husband and her daughter has a father. Why are you acting so inappropriately?" Instead of realizing his mistake, he angrily retorted, "Her husband doesn't earn much, and she has to take care of her daughter and can't work. What's wrong with buying them a gift?" In response, I bought a house for a young male friend I had just met. This time, it was my husband's turn to question me, "Have you lost it?" I smiled calmly and replied, "I can earn money, and there's nothing wrong with gifting something to a guy I like."
